It's not that exciting. I saw "Disco 2000" on tv and I liked the video. So I bought "Different class". That was in January 1996. Different (haha) to other cd's, this was one, which I rummaged out of my cd-shelf regulary over the years. An american friend of mine calls that a "bumerang-cd".
I really like it, when I'm on the Autobahn, especially in the night. It helps me not to sleep. Last year in March it was time again to listen to it and suddenly I wanted to know somethings about the lyrics. You know, you need a magnifier to read the lyrics in the cd-covers. So I did a research on the internet, found pulpwiki, found videos on youtube, found this forum, etc. And then I heard of the reunion and I think, it was a very good timing, by instant. Meanwhile I have a lot of cd's, mp3's, books.
I'll chip in with mine if you don't mind Maidmarian
The first time I ever saw Pulp on tv (that I remember) was on the Mercury prize in 94 (when I was 14). I was flicking through channels in my bedroom when i (#1) heard Babies and (#2) saw Jarvis. I remember the thing that went through my mind was somewhere along the lines of "ooh, that sounds ace. Ooooooh, look at him"
The first time I saw them live was at the Heineken festival in 95. :)
I was in a band in my early teens. My first Pulp encounter was being given a recording of Babies to learn. It was a lot of fun. Before long, our set list was dominated by Pulp songs, and I sought-out Pulp goodness where ever I could find it.
Thank you for your storys. It's so nice t talk to people, who have the same intereset, to say it in a harmless way. As a fan, I can be very strenuous, not all of my friends like to hear Pulp all the time in my car or when they visit me. Not all find the interview with Stephan Merchant funny (the main problem is, that they don't understand it, and they don't want to listen to it 10 times in succession like me). So it's good to have a place, where I'm not alone with this lunacy. And for me, it is very interesting, how Pulp came into your life.
My first "exposure" to Pulp happened ages ago, hearing 'Common People' and 'Disco 2000' on the radio and on TV, but I only really started taking notice a few years ago. I was born the year 'Common People' was released, so I've missed most of Pulp (though I soon caught up). I remember, it was coming up to my birthday, and I was watching some music channel, possibly Q or NME, and they played a string of Pulp songs. It was the first time I heard 'Help the Aged' as well. Similarly to JarvGirl, I remember being very impressed with the songs, and quite awestruck. Not long after this I remember excitedly telling my friend I was getting some Pulp albums for my birthday, and also telling her that "Jarvis is made of porcelain and sex." I still can't work out if I'm embarrassed or amused by my choice of words.
I think, a lot of people here have a lot of embarrassing and amusing experiences with this porcelain guy . Why live in the world, when you can live in your head...
It was in 1995, I remember disliking Common People at first (when I was 12), but that was probably more to do with everyone singing it. The first time I actually sat down and paid attention to Pulp was when they played Mis-Shapes on Top Of The Pops. I was really impressed but also knew they were a bit uncool compared to Oasis and Blur. Thankfully my parents bought Different Class for me at Christmas (without me knowing) and they became my favourite band after I got over the initial shock
A friend of mine I met through a mutual interest in Radiohead kept recommending Pulp to me so I listened to Different Class and His 'n' Hers and thought "well this is OK" and then put it aside for about two months and then I got drunk one night and wound up singing along to Different Class at 3 in the morning and now they're my favorite band in the world and I may or may not have an unhealthy obsession with a certain tall bassist.

Ah yes, who can forget one of the finest/dirtiest bits of descriptive writing on the man (or any other man..ever). I don't think even Jarvis could top your auotgraphed uterus quote!
The truth is I didn't come up with that. I think I heard it in a Russell Brand stand up or something and just added it as a tag to the photo. Which is only slightly less embarrassing

I lived very close to 'Wayne Furniss' on the same eatate in Hackenthorpe, Weakland Crescent. So i suppose it would have been sometime in '81-'82? I sat in on a rehersal once, they we're a bit of a mess though..Somewhere between 'Devo/talking heads and sham 69...What a mash up. I was all 'Kraftwerk/Japan/Gary Numan at the time. So this incarnation of Pulp wasn't really my thing at all, ive come to enjoy this stuff more over the years though.
Well,ok, if you insist..I'll start again rather than re-cap...Please forgive me for some of the time-line inaccuracies, I'm sure Sturdy will set them straight. So, i went to the same schools and grew up on the same estate as 'Wayne Furniss' in Hackenthorpe, Sheffield. I loved my music and he loved his, slightly older than i and was in a local band called Pulp. I wasn't old enough to go to any of these early concerts so Wayne suggested i came to listen to a rehersal, which i did. It really wasn't my thing, they sounded like a Devo/talking heads/Sham 69 mash up to me..But i have come to appreciate this early pulp sound over the years. Next thing i heard was the 'It' lp. mmm, still wasn't my thing but i wanted to like them because they we're local and Wayne was a member. soon it was '84 and i had started going to a club called the limit and a pub called the hallamshire. Both places well known locally for live music. One afternoon while i was wandering around town i saw 2 guys sticking posters up for a show at the Beehive pub, the group? Pulp of course and it was Jarvis & Russell sticking up the posters, that was July 1984. I went to the show and it was all very different from what i had heard before. It had attitude and a bad temper, just my thing. From then on i dont think i missed a Yorkshire show right up to the present day? I spoke with the group on many occasions after these little concerts, exchanging tapes etc..I had my own music thing, keyboards/drum machines...and i bought my first ever amplifier from Wayne around '85, I wish i still had it. It had a Pulp logo on the speaker written with liquid paper i think, so i would assume it would have been used during their early shows. Anyways, here we are in 2013 and i still love them.
Hello DEF2. Thank you, that is very special and very near to the group. I'm a little bit jealous now. Relating to your "Kraftwerk-days", I lived 17 years in Düsseldorf (but I've never seen them), so unfortunately I have nothing to offer as my knowledge from cd's, books, dvd's and youtube.
DEF2, thank you for your last post. That was a great little read and reminded me of what life was like in those days... I so remember exchanging tapes, LPs, etc. I have kept all my old cassettes from those days and even all my outfits from 1980 onwards... (I was very into clothes!).
Thanks, i was going to bore you all to tears by taking the Jason/Pulp relationship story upto the present day. And maidmarian, my kraftwerk years aint over, you may have noticed my avatar is the Autobahn/motorway symbol, for me the first classic Kraftwerk album.
Ok, you've asked for it..VOL 2...Where were we? oh yeah, 1985, a good year for pulp music as far as i'm concerned. Lots of concerts. The main songs i seem to remember more than any others are 'Fairground & Take you back..fairground largely i think because Russell sang it, they always seemed to open with this and jarvis hidden out of sight playing the guitar until he joined in on the chorus. Mind you as those recent live tapes from '85 have surfaced maybe they didn't open with fairground all that often? One evening in the Limit club i was talking to Russell and he handed me a postage stamp sized flier for a forthcoming show in Chesterfield..10th July...A day before my birthday so this was gonna be my birthday evening out. Incidently, it was this very flier that prompted me to contact Will, he of Pulpwiki. because i had only recently discovered the site (about 3 yrs ago now) i noticed that the corresponding dates for this particular show didn't match up. anyways, i sent him a copy of the flier and the page was altered. Since then ive sent one or two items over to Will for inclusion on the site. I think there is still some doubt which is the correct date though? The concert that evening was the usual pulp model '85...Flashes of shambles, flashes of 'we all know this one, really! and thats about as much as i remember about it. You have to remember at this time the only Material available or what i had was..the PIng Pong Jerry demo, the little girl ep,and a compilation tape of the 'It lp and the singles plus the track 'what do you say? All of these very kindly donated by Jarvis. Soon be 1986...
Thank you again! This morning I thought, another good name for this topic would have been "Do you remmber the first time?" But that would have been too commonplace. Ha, how all these words fit!
DEF2, I thought already, that you are still a Kraftwerk-Fan. So maybe, you are interested in that
