Hey, I've put up the entire La Cigale recording from 1991, just because everyone should hear it.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vZqRQDARa9o

This has started me thinking about His 'n' Hers. I've heard it said that people prefer live versions of certain tracks to studio ones, and the ones from this album keep cropping up. I'd like to make a new version of the LP entirely from live recordings. This can also include b-sides (Sisters EP / Lipgloss / DYRTFT).

I don't want to spend ages going through every bootleg there is, so could you give your suggestions for the best live versions of tracks?

Fair play. Stephen probably would have eventually got round to it as part of his portfolio project but he's got a baby to occupy him.

Radio sessions and soundboard recordings will have the best quality and there's plenty of relevant material to delve into between 1991 and 1994. The Mark Goodier '92 session is highly feted. The late-1993 one with Mark Radcliffe is interesting as the new songs performed (Have You Seen Her Lately?, His'n'Hers and Joyriders) sound fresh and exciting but also more like off-the-cuff demos than genuine alternatives to their album versions.

In my opinion Pink Glove in session on Peel is unbeatable. She's A Lady from one of the French '91 shows or any decent 1992/'93 recording with Russell's build-up and practically any live version of DYRTFT are far preferable to the overly-lacquered album versions.

I have a like/pissed-off relationship when it comes to Buller's production. He completely turned OU around from the flat demo it was and stuff like S:SC and Street Lites shimmer and breathe at the right times. On HnH though a lot of the songs are mired in reverb and the energy from some of the songs in live form is sadly lost (though that's true of a lot of records).

Pulp seemed to be unsure of him too. Razzmatazz was remixed for release by Phil Vinall (much to the chagrin of Luke Haines who thought of Vinall as The Auteurs producer alone) and You're A Nightmare was left as it was after the '93 Peel session and not produced in studio with Buller with the rest of the era's material. Their decision not to go with him post-HnH confirmed, according to Steve in the Martin Aston book on Pulp, after the band heard his work on the echo-laden Dog Man Star by Suede later in 1994. Bernard Butler seemed to agree.

You know it's gonna be quite tricky to do this. The Sound City 93 gig has some great versions and Manchester Uni 94 probably has the best David's Last Summer. What you gonna do about Someone like the Moon? I'll have a think about this I suppose.

It might not be studio quality but I'm asking for Acrylic Afternoons at the Heineken to be considered. It's a fab version that I have extremely fond memories of!

Didn't think about live versions from later eras but there probably are some examples of great ones like Happy Endings at Auto.

Thanks DEF2, that's exactly what I'm after. Anyone else have other ideas? I'm looking for individual tracks, not entire sets.

Hi Weej,

I have a question to your youtube-video. I've listened to it an found much more songs than "Space", "Death II" and "Live on". E.G. '"Countdown", Don't you love me anymore" etc. Why did you write only 3 songs in the description?

I like the "Sunrise"-version from the Eden Project and "Birds in your garden" from the same concert.

Or are they too young?

Ah! Sorry! I have to read better.
O.k. "His and Her's": I like all songs from "No stillettoes" and I think that Jarvis sings "Lyndhurst grove" better here than on the CD, especially the high tunes. And I like when he peels the tangerine at the beginning. Very cool! Tangerine is Mandarine??? Tss, why does a band calls herself "Tangerine dreams". Is it there favourite desert?confuse

I wonder why I can't hear what Jarvis was saying in the first song from the youtube video clearly. I think I can only hear a couple of "oui"s in it. Is it a translation of the ( English ) lyric?

Its so hard to understand!
But maybe, you can hear this:
Mesdames, nous sommes Pulp (we are Pulp)
Et maintenant le song Le space (and now the song Le space)
From His and Hers (I just understand His and Hers)
And than the song starts in french
