Has anyone seen/got any footage/pictures of our Jarvis playing this special little machine? Not including the '2 little boys' stars in their eyes performance. I guess it would only be during 'Space' that he actually plays it live.
Ok, I've been wracking my brains over the last couple of hours and I can't think that there is anything that's out there at the moment. Maybe the Tony Rayner footage from late '91 at the Leadmill might have Space on it but that's a bit of a long shot. So I would say the only possible footage, and I'm sure you know this, will be from the Day That Never Happened film which will, of course, never see the light of day. There aren't even any pics of Jarvis playing the stylophone from that date though.
Is 'Styloroc' thus named because keyboards sound like a stylophone (like 'The Boss' was so-called because it apparently sounded like Brucey), or was one actually used? The sliding effect at the end of the song (I'm currently listening to the University of London Union version) certainly sounds like the real thing.
In answer to Superchob's question, the Stylophone featured on Styloroc (and many other songs off Intro & His N Hers) is the large Stylophone 350S model (with nearly four octave keyboard and a plethora of useless on-board effects!) which sat atop Candida's mighty tower for most (if not all) live shows from this period. Not sure whether it was Mark or Candida who actually played it on the rare occasion they gave Styloroc an outing though?
...and in answer to the OP, I don't think I have ever seen any photographic evidence of Jarvis playing the "pocket" model, although some gig reviews in the old Pulp People Scrapbooks referred to him playing it above and behind his head like Hendrix, which I'm sure would be a sight to behold!
Of course there will be footage of him playing the stylophone but it is safely tucked away in some TV company vault. The concert that was recorded for Stage One in '91 kicked off with Space and the sleeve notes to the Party Clowns CD mention Jarvis's stylophone solo. So all we need is for someone to release the whole concert on DVD and your wish will be granted.
