Now that it's approaching, I wonder if there's anything planned?

Tomorrow, isn't it? Hasn't he said that he just wants to forget that it's happening?!

I remember when Weller turned 50 one of the music monthlies released a special magazine on his career to mark the occasion. I wondered at the time if Jarvis would get similar treatment but I guess his output is only about half that of Weller's and anyway those kinds of publications are more dad-rock friendly.

There might be a bit more Pulp than normal played on the radio tomorrow - I'm sure there are other DJ's who do a On This Day/ Famous Birthdays Today kind of thing.

Tweet here from a photographer from today's NME - would appear to be a "half a century" article. He didn't do a very good job of forgetting about it on Sunday.

I hope there's something in some music magazine...I will always remember Jarvis's birthday because it falls on the same day as my geriatric Jack Russell Terrier, Chance, who is turning 16 tomorrow...

I'd say he's doing pretty good for 50. Maybe we should all chip in and get him a bottle of shampoo.

Well I tried to get a Pulp earworm on Shaun Keaveny, possibly because I only sent it in when I got up at 10 to 8, 10 minutes before they do the feature.

It turns out DC is 6 Music album of the day, nice interview on the Music News with Richard Hawley.

Happy birthday Jarvis!

If they were out and about doing gigs there would be something mroe made of it - didn't a bunch of you sing happy birthday for Russell on his 50th. was it at a gig in Spain or something? Did I just dream that?

Yes, happy birthday, Jarvis.

You are right, Eamonn, Jarvis did say he didn't want to think about it but I think he will embrace his fifties once he's got that milestone birthday celebrated and out of the way. He still looks young for his age (underneath that beard and the glasses) and, assuming he's managed to kick the fags, he'll probably make 100. So he's only at the half-way point... (This is what I tell myself, too).

I wore my Pulp t-shirt today, and my Jarvis pin-badge, in acknowledgement of Mr Cocker's birthday. A slightly sad salute, but a salute nonetheless.

Panther, did you just say he has quit smoking? I'm surprised.

He's talked about quitting smoking on the radio. I think he has had some sort of respitatory problems. He has also talked about taking winter holidays in warm countries for the same reason, apart from being very pleasant presumably. Sarah on here got cross with him for having a go at Mark about summat in one of the reunion gigs and I later heard him talk about that a bit sheepishly but blamed it on steroids. I have a friend who had to take a course of steroids for something a while back and he went quite strange on them, so it's not entirely implausible. Even Richard Hawley has given up apparently.

Hmm, come to think if it, when Hawley gave me a surprise hug at The Big Melt he didn't smell of fags. Just red wine!

Myron, I don't know that he has, I am just guessing. I understand he has tried to several times and it strikes me that the beginning of a new half-century, psychologically speaking, would be an ideal time to quit. Also, no one's luck goes on forever and that scares a lot of people into stopping at around Jarvis's age.

Personally, I hope he lives to a ripe old age, as I always like to see what he is going to do next...

In this week's NME which I only bought for the Franz Ferdinand CD, there is a two page spread of Jarvis' 50 greatest moments.
