It's not Dolebusters - Magnus wasn't there for that one and he's clearly on drums here. And it's not the Hallamshire - compare with the pics at http://www.pulpwiki.net/Pulp/HallamshireHotel
As saw119 says it's likely to be one of the Outrage gigs from late 1985. If we exclude the ones where Magnus wasn't around that leaves the following:
4 October - Darlington Arts Centre (Outrage Tour) 7 October - Adam & Eve's, Chesterfield 17 October - Bradford University (Outrage Tour) 23 October - Middlesbrough (Outrage Tour) 25 October - Sheffield University 6 November - The Wellington, Hull (Outrage Tour)
Probably not Bradford or Sheffield Uni as it looks more like a pub venue.
Great photo anyway - where did you find it Eamonn?

It was posted on Pulp's facespace page recently. In the same album the person has pics of Henry Normal onstage, which made me think it was Dolebusters. She also has pics of other bands like Chumbawamba but it looks like they're taken from different dates and venues from the mid-80s.
Just to show it takes all sorts, even on the Pulp Facebook page, I thought some people might appreciate the latest photo posted there:
I'm more convinced than ever that it's the Hallamshire after looking at those pics Sturdy! Look at the position of the windows and length of the curtains. If it is the Hallamshire it's actually a pic of a gig we have a recording of.
I'm pretty much convinced it is, i had forgotten about those pics on pulpwiki. Its my one man band setting up with the keyboards supporting some other Sheffield faces, february '87.
Nay lad. The back wall of the Hallamshire had a chimney breast, patterned wallpaper and plain curtains, whereas the wherever this picture is from had a plain back wall, no chimney breast and patterned curtains. The Hallamshire also had seating right along the side wall going up to the stage, whereas this place appears to have an upright piano next to the stage, which wouldn't have been possible had the seating been there. This is somewhere else. I stake my professional reputation on it!

Aha! Going through the the album the photo's taken from, there is another comment from the photographer which identifies the venue as Chesterfield Conservative Club. Which would (probably) pin the date down to 31 May 1986. The 'Band of '85' banner must be a red herring then!

Diddled about with this in Photoshop and managed to bring up the quality a bit. Not too bad actually - would be even better if the scan was higher res.
