It's boring round here with nothing to talk about, so I'm starting up one of those pointless time-killing competitions people try from time to time.
The rules are simple - choose winners from a set of elimination matches, each week the votes will be counted, winners will be listed and tracks eliminated.
The songs are seeded so we shouldn't have any Babies vs Common People, not for a while anyway.
Eventually there will be an ultimate winner, might take a while though.
So, here are the pairings for round one, week one.
Come on Dirty World! Stomp those babbies to death. Ahem.
You're a right traitor you Eamonn with your Babies avatar!
It's possibly my favourite Pulp single and one of my favourite songs but IADW still leaves me gobsmacked six and a half years after hearing it having assumed it was originally discarded with good reason. Plus, everybody loves the underdog (not the song).
Ok, to make things clear. Losing songs will be eliminated forever. All CDs/Records/Taopes must be melted down, all mp3s deleted. Your memories will be selectively erased with magnets. If there's a draw I guess both can survive (hadn't really thought about this)
I can't choose between David's Last Summer or Duck Diving, I really can't. David's Last Summer/Duck Diving Coy Mistress Babies Live Bed Show Don't You Know
David's Last Summer 7.5 vs Duck Diving 5.5 Roadkill 10 vs Coy Mistress 3 Babies 7 vs It's a Dirty World 6 Live Bed Show 9 vs Aborigine 4 Don't You Know 13 vs Femme Fatale 0
Joking Aside Mis-shapes Mile End After You There's No Emotion
I get the strange sense that DYRTFT and Pink Glove are at some point going to compete against each other. If this happens then my head will implode from the sheer indecision. Be warned, Weej, you may have murder on your hands.

I must ask, how is it decided what goes against each other? Is it completely random, or is there a method to all of this?

I must ask, how is it decided what goes against each other? Is it completely random, or is there a method to all of this?
It's done in Excel, and it works like this:
Step 1 - Songs ranked (1 = imperial-phase single, 2 = other single, 3 = imperial phase album track, and so on)
Step 2 - List sorted by rank (shuffled first to avoid alphabetical sorting / give it the random element)
Step 3 - Bottom half of list cut and pasted next to top half
Step 4 - Pairs of songs voted on
Step 5 - After all pairs have been voted on, copy second column back into first row and return to step 2
....and so on until there's only one song left.
So famous singles will generally be matched against album tracks, more obscure album tracks matched against live-only 80s tracks, etc.
....I did say this wasn't interesting, didn't I?
Not interesting? Sir, I feel as if I have peeled back the curtain and witnessed the magic happen.
P.S. It seems that Sylvia is going to lose to Susan by a pinch, just as I expected really. It's probably for the best but I'm to miss that portentous old' gal.

I think I might be a little bit in love with you, Misshaped. (Also, you might be pleased to note, autocorrect just changed 'I think' into 'thy honk'.)

You'll soon regret that statement, I'm twice as annoying as I am ever lovable. (I think I might make a log of every instance of bizarre autocorrect and then send it to Apple after a full year.)
