A little interview with sometime Morrissey bassist Johnny Bridgwood reveals that Richard Hawley auditioned to be in Morrissey's rockabilly band of the early '90's!
JH: Were you intimidated by Morrissey?
JB: No because I wasnt a Smiths fan. I was aware of him, I knew he was around, but no. We set up to play. Richard Hawley was there, auditioning for the band.
JH: What? No way!
JB: Yes he auditioned but didnt get in!
JH: Hes fantastic.
JB: Yes he is. Would have been a different journey.
Soz, pretty sure a live version is in one of the yahoo accounts. Hawley recycled it for the song Naked In Pitsmoor on his first (mini) album. They played it together at the Royal Albert Hall a few years ago(http://www.pulpwiki.net/Jarvis/HappyNewYearBaby). It's interesting to compare the difference in vocal melody line between Jarvis' Happy New Year Baby and Richard's Naked In Pitsmoor.

I'm sure there's a Hawley interview from a few years ago where he talks about his Morrissey audition, which apparently was going well until he made the mistake of taking the mic himself. The band were jamming on what I think was an Elvis song and Morrissey supposedly asked why he was singing, to which he replied something about "backing vocals?". That was him fucked for that job I suppose.

Born To Cry, Happy New Year Baby and maybe a few more bits and bobs that he wrote with Jarvis and even with the rest of Pulp (such as Grandfather's Nursery) in 1999/2000. Also beefed-up the live sound for the big shows during the TIH era and some more around WLL so he definitely contributed but I'm not sure if Pulp 1998-2002 would have been hugely different without him.
The style of Hawley's playing might have contributed more to the live sound of the TIH and WLL period than we might expect. For example, Stereophonics did have two different stand-in live guitarists, because they need two for a live feel, but they both sound significantly different while playing the same bits.
