I'm fine with it. First of all, I checked the prices and the cheapest rooms are genuinely cheap, even with booking costs. Considering it's a cruise, most cruises are more expensive. So the "uncommon" issue is a bit overrated. I think it's a pretty neat idea, having a festival on a boat. I'd want to go, sitting in the sun all day and then some cool artists in the evening.
I don't get all the commotion.
Are you kidding? I checked the prices too. The cheapest room you can get is if you share with 3 other people, and each person has to pay $700 ($500 + $200 booking fee). Good luck finding 3 mates with $700 burning a hole in their pockets. Between the 4 of you, that's just $2800.
Want a room to yourself? You'll have to buy two tickets at $750 each, but at least you only have to pay 1 booking fee, so that's a discount at just $1700. (mind you: thats for the worst room on the ship)
Then there's travel expenses to Florida.
These prices would be acceptable for a week long cruise, but this is only 3 nights.
One of the big questions is: will the bands mingle with the guests? If so, that might be cool. But my guess is the bands will have their own exclusive area of the ship if they even stay on board. Surely Coachella would promote the chance to mingle with the bands if that were the case, which leads me to beleive that you can't.
To me, this cruise is a terrible idea because it's so obviously going to fail and when it does it is going to be an embarrassment for Pulp. The bands on offer don't really have enough in common to get to anybody excited enough to shell out $1000+. Who would go on this? Like, if it were "The Britpop Cruise", and had Pulp, Suede, Spearmint, and Sleeper or something like that, I could see this being successful and cool.
But this is just weird and clearly not thought out well. Even the dates are strange: a few days before Christmas. Who is free?

There's a poll is there? Well that changes everything. For the record I may ask a lot of silly questions (not ones that have just been answered a dozen times already that day) but I rarely add a poll. (the 'what would you like Jarvis to do next' poll was added by a meddlesome mod.)

So the "uncommon" issue is a bit overrated. I think it's a pretty neat idea, having a festival on a boat. I'd want to go, sitting in the sun all day and then some cool artists in the evening. Sign me up. And for Pulp, headling a festival that (clearly) causes this much stir, is an excellent chance to gain new fans and well, yes, money. Sure, it's a bit of a bummer that Sheffield isn't the last gig (but then again, they never said it would be) and I'm sure we are all happy with them continuing.
I'm not familiar with the regular cruise market, but aren't (NH) winter cruises big business, get away from the freezing misery home, not to mention the insanity of the run up to Christmas, just run away to the sun?? I think Jarvis has made a bit of winter sun a regular thing over the last few years since he's had whatever respiratory problems he has (smoking related by the sound of it), just this time someone's paying him to go, result.
Even in the scenario that it doesn't sell and ends up being cancelled or scaled down, is that not what business people do all the time, test markets, some things take off, some don't, all in a days work? I don't know anything much about business either.
I was going to agree with Arno that I don't get the commotion, but actually, it is entirely to be expected.

I know it's not the same but it reminds of the private beer company performance that convinced Russell to leave at the end of '96. I wonder if Russell will be setting sail with the band for these jollies?
Saw, I think the two are rather different, to be honest. (Do remember too that the beer thingummy had competition winners as well as B List celebs and journalists)
But here it is all paying customers. And Russell, according to that interview a few months back, liked the idea of people disliking the band and there being 'a real danger we could get booed off'.
So...*technically* playing a gig on a boat to lots of moneyed people who he mightn't like (and who mightn't like him) has to be something he'd want to do.
Sorry but I have to disagree with that Stephen, I'd put money on Russell thinking it's a bad idea! There wouldn't be a danger of being booed off at this anyway
Sorry, I really couldnt give a shit. Pulp are together, performing, that's something everybody wanted for years and we got it. They can perform anywhere they want, it's their band after all.
Liltman, oh yeah I do agree. I don't think Russell would be up for it. I was just pointing out how, in that interview, he said that he wanted to play to potentially hostile crowds.
But maybe Russell has two different types of hostile crowds in mind. One he is accepting of, and the other not so much.
The Coachella forum seems to have quite a lot of negative reaction too. From the forum:
Re: Who came up with this idea and how [theories]? Paige: Apparently people are going broke fast what do we do.... Tollet: Lets throw a fucking cruise and get their money before the government does! Paige: I'll call Pulp, that will ensure the yuppies! Tollet: Good..good..I will call upon the Girl Talk to ensure mindless trust fund children spend thousands of dollars also! Paige: WE MUST SELL DESIGNER BATHING SUITS! Tollet touches his wetness.
Even though I'm uncomfortable with the idea (like I summed up in the other thread :P ) I've only thought about it on these forums so I don't feel that strongly. I've read a few people on twitter and the like saying they're no longer fans of Pulp because of it which seems like a major over reaction - they probably just thought it sounded like a nice holiday.
I do really hope this isn't how they end it. I could get behind the idea of ending it on a home-coming show, full to the brim with some of their most enthusiastic fans and this definitely wouldn't have the same impact.
I know people whove done these cruises with bands (Dave Matthews Band, Weezer, 311, etc) and the acts do mingle through out the boat, but the bands do get their own private areas and pools. Seating for the shows depends on where you are on the boat, the more you pay for your cabin the better your seat. Some acts do meet and greets, which are included in the price and it comes with a commemorative photo.. I know with DMB they did a couple of shows on a private island..
