Choosing a Pulp compilation tracklist...

Dear all,

There's someone on this board who I'm intending on making a Pulp comp for. Now, this person is already a fan and went to a fair few of the Pulp gigs last year but has never investigated any Pulp pre-Intro, even though - as can be seen - they does actually like that album itself. So I'm aiming at doing an It/Freaks/Separations/MOTU/80s Demos comp that will spread the word about the wonderful pre-pop-Pulp but still be listenable.

These are the said person's favourite Pulp songs if it helps anyone to make a decision:

1.         Wickerman

2.         Sunrise

3.         This Is Hardcore

4.         Common People

5.         O.U. (Gone, Gone)

6.         Babies

7.         Countdown

8.         Do You Remember the First Time?

9.         Seductive Barry

10.        Monday Morning

Nearly-songs...

Happy Endings, Last Day of the Miners' Strike, Live Bed Show, Party Hard, Roadkill, The Trees, Underwear, Sheffield: Sex City

I'm thinking of...

It: Wishful Thinking, In Many Ways, My Lighthouse

Freaks: Don't You Know, Little Girl, Dogs..., 97 Lovers

Separations: Love is Blind, Countdown (Single version), MLG, Death II, Death Comes To Town

A bit conservative I know, but hopefully someone else has some good ideas. I'd also like to get some Russell on there if at all possible.

Any thoughts anyone...?

I do love Mark of the Devil, but mightn't it be a bit too jarring given the pop/ballad nature of the favourites...?

Oh yes, Live On needs to be on here too. And maybe The Boss.

I think the Countdown compilation is a good guide for listenable old Pulp. If they like Wickerman you should definitely include Being Followed Home

Good call, yes.

And yeah, I do love Countdown - it's what got me into the old stuff - but I thought a one CD thing might get listened to more.

Of course, in an ideal world, my lovingly hand made and hand printed 'Senior Moments' compilation would do, but sadly I think it would be an unwanted gift.

I think Anorexic Beauty is supremely catchy.

I agree with Fred, definitely Anorexic Beauty. Perhaps I Want You too

You must include Don't You Know in my opinion. It has a really wonderful keyboard line from Candida. Personally I prefer the Sudan Gerri version.

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned "They Suffocate at Night" yet. I think it's one of their finest moments from the 1980s

I love it, but thought it might polarise opinion a little as it could be seen as discordant and difficult...
