Yes, Mark Sturdy's excellent 'Don't Falter' clubnight at 'Baby Jupiter' in Leeds will - in my slot at least - be playing music by the likes of Relaxed Muscle and Venini tonight. So come along and have a dance. And request some stuff!

Did you make it down Thomas? You should have said hello! Thanks for coming (if you did) anyway. And thanks Stphen obviously.

Yeah I was down there, had time for a few drinks and saw the show but couldn't stick around after unfortunately. Really enjoyed hearing Homewrecker played in a bar where humans could hear it, and there was another early pulp track played prior to their set whose name eludes me at the moment.

Wind Up Birds themselves were really interesting, loved the fact they opened with There Won't Always Be An England, also hearing Yorkshire Call Centre and Tyre Fire was brilliant. I didn't realise they were such a 'punk' band however it's probably been about 5 years since I last saw them play... Really impressed.

I'll try and make it down on the 11th.

Aah yes, that was me playing Homewrecker and OU (and, indeed, Carnival Star by Venini). If you'd stayed afterwards you'd have heard Stephen play Seconds!

Glad you had a good night - the Baby Jupiter PA system has a tendency to make most things sound a bit punk! I enjoyed them playing England too in that slowed-down, ominous way - almost like a Blue Cheer or Vanilla Fudge sort of version (not comparisons I ever thought I'd make when talking about The Wind-up Birds). Hope you can make the 11th. I've got an advance copy of the album and it looks and sounds great!

I didn't know that Sturdy and Stephen DJ, or hung out together socially or that Sturdy has his own club night. Three things I can't remember being mentioned on here before.

All those things have been mentioned on here before, although I guess I don't like to go on about them too much - what with this being a Pulp forum rather than a tool for the masturbatory self-promotion of Mark Sturdy's various bizarre projects. But yes! I know Stephen (albeit initially from posting on here and other such internet endeavours over the years), and I do a mostly night in Leeds called Don't Falter which he's a regular at and has often DJed, and I have a label called Sturdy Records which puts out records by The Wind-up Birds amongst others. In the interesting of full disclosure, see www.facebook.com/dontfalter and www.sturdy-records.co.uk.

Wind Up Birds were wonderful again. It is rare that Don't Falter has a mis-hit.

Charles of the Ritz, I'm looking at you.

The first song in TWUB set was amazing. And the singer proves to be a remarkably approachable, if slightly odd gentleman. His dialogue was somewhat Cockeresque between songs: "I like playing this venue. Don't like the area, though. Gentlemen's Clubs. I thought if a Gentleman saw a topless lady he'd put his coat around her. I thought that was what Gentlemen did"...

Fred, Sturdy and I despise each other in real life and only pretend to be civil on here for the comfort of other users. This hatred is further spread by the fact that usually at least one (and often both) of our significant others often have to present when we converse of Pulp minutae and gossip. Said situation not helped by the fact that both significant others receive (certainly on my behalf) far too much of this information whilst at home. "Wayne Furniss emailed me back!" "Mick Hercun from Tsi Tsa is lovely!" etc. etc.

Sturdy, whilst undoubtedly master of his club (few would dare challenge him. His fisticuff skills are legendary), runs it in a very disciplinarian manner (only Pulp related songs to be played) and runs endless quizzes on Pulp (up to seven a night with club goers who fail the quizzes being forcibly ejected by the man himself). He usually ends up drinking the prizes himself however, which usually results in him swagering around in a dishevelled, drunken mess by the early hours. During these times he flaunts his bootleg collection, and occasionally mislays some of these on beer soaked tables, which is how they end up entering the public domain.

In the real world, I do indeed DJ and used to do this at some of my fabulous clubnights c2004-2008. Unfortunately, whilst my experiences have worn me down over the years so that I no longer want to run anything myself, Mark's still able to get some enthusiasm for doing so. Well done to him.

All of the above is pretty much true.

We shall have to agree to differ. I liked the idea, and I liked the intro/outro tape, but I thought it was very messy. And I quite like messy bands! Wind Up Birds, Blood Oranges, Tigercats, Boyfriends were all great though. Maybe I'm missing some...

Granted, they were definitely very, very messy. Especially after the mid-set round of tequila shots.
