Because I had some major problems with paypal when this disc was first released I couldn't buy it, after much time tearing my hair out on the Paypal website I finally got sorted out and now have the disc.

Went to the search part of this forum and couldn't find a thread about it (I remember a thread telling people the news about this disc but can't remember a thread discussing what people thought of the CD).

I hadn't heard of any of the artists so didn't know what to expect.

I like the first two tracks most at the moment although they're both a bit mental. Beeing by Carol Batton just a spoken word (was it from a spoken word album?), and then Yamasuki! I nearly spat my tea out! Had to quickly turn it down so I didn't scare any children that might be playing outside.

I might write a bit more on the other tracks when I get a handle on them. Got it a few weeks ago but hadn't listened to it properly. The Trip seems quite sedate in comparison. I was relieved when I found it on the website because some of the newer discs in the series were already sold out.

Just spotted this album is now on iTunes store but without Yamashki and The World Is a Ghetto - both big losses.

I've realised why I like Beeing by Carol Batton so much, it somehow reminds me of the school scenes in The Wickerman (but with a Mancunian accent.)

The World is a Ghetto is a chilled out instrumental on steel drums, bit spooky sounding.

Les Roi Des... etc. Not a fan so much as other songs but still good, quite complex instrumental.

Super Man, Super Cool is quite cool. Simple French lyrics, halfway between spoken and sung, cool guitar noises in the background sounds almost like something from Super Fly.

Death Trip also sounds like a 70's movie soundtrack with samples from what sounds like action/chase movies of the period. Not something I'll listen to loads but nice to hear.

Rational Anthem: Du-duh-du-duh-duh-duh-du-DOO! Catchy sounds like a forgotten classic maybe, could be Lou Reed singing.

Tocatta Y Fug - one word funereal. Yet another instrumental.

Haxipola's Trip, sounds like a very short instrumental from a bad horror film. Probably with people creeping around a graveyard at night.

Flight 2 - the sequel to Flight. Catchy music with shouty vocals - sounds a bit like someone straining on the toilet - in spite of this description I quite like it.

Silver Chord - haunting, two female vocals. Good if you're in the right mood for it.

Au Desepoir Des Singes - sounds like a French Scott Walker, music and vocals contrast well with each other.

That's my review. Hope it was in some way useful. I wonder why Q Magazine never got back to me about that job...

EDIT: I purposefully not given any significan details about Yamashki because I wouldn't want to ruin the surprise.

Jean Claude Vannier who has a couple of tracks on that comp did the string arrangements for Serge on his Historie de Melody Nelson project. In fact they worked very closely on several soundtracks through the 70's.

I got mine here direct through the Finders Keepers site, this has Yamasuki on it, but not the steel drum one you describe here.

To be honest, I'm not sure what I make of it on a track by track basis, I'm quite slow at taking in music. I think what I really enjoy is just having some really random stuff injected into my music, like listening to the radio show I suppose. A few that have stood out so far:

The Carol Batton track has a resonance with Mis-shapes thematically.

I like the biker funeral one (Death Trip), though when I'm not paying attention, I mishear it as Viking funeral half way through and wonder what I am listening to.

Yamasuki is fun.

Super man, super cool is cool, I agree.

Roi des Mouches has rather striking violin (I think, I'm not too good at this sort of thing, rather low version of a violin, maybe I should stick with the vague "string") that I rather like. Despoir des Singes has similar bits
