Stephen has suggested that he will continue the portfolios up as far as 1991, at least, and this has led me to think about what recordings exist from that period. Below is a list of the ones I know about and believe to be in circulation. I have copies of almost all of these and will gladly give Stephen copies if he needs them.

The only recording that I don't have is the one from Halifax Piece Hall (not to be confused with the more widely circulated 1992 concert). I do vaguely remember seeing this on people's trade lists a long time ago, so there is a chance somebody might have it. So my question is, does anyone have a copy that they would be willing to share? Also, does anyone know of any other 1991 recordings not listed below?

  • 16th March 1991 - The Leadmill, Sheffield (New Sessions footage, 6 songs)
  • 20th July 1991 - Town & Country Club, London (Stage One footage, 5 songs)
  • 31st August 1991 - Piece Hall, Halifax
  • 1st September 1991 - The Leadmill, Sheffield (video of two songs on The Beat Is the Law, Fanfare for the Common People DVD)
  • 11th September 1991 - Hit the North session (BBC Radio 5)
  • 4th October 1991 - Lower Refectory, Sheffield University
  • 11th October 1991 - Town & Country Club, London
  • 18th October 1991 - Festival Les Inrockuptibles, Lille (4 songs only)
  • 19th October 1991 - Festival Les Inrockuptibles, La Cigale, Paris (three versions: audience, MW broadcast, unedited pre-broadcast)
  • 15th November 1991 - Subterrania, London
  • 28th December 1991 - The Leadmill, Sheffield

EDIT: added Hit the North session

Sorry, can't help with the Halifax show but looking at your list made me think there was something missing. Shouldn't we include the Hit The North session in that list? I wonder if a better recording of that will ever surface? Mind you, if I remember rightly wasn't Radio 5 Medium Wave and susceptible to random interference? I have some Julian Cope sessions from Radio 5 that are also quite rough.

You're right about the ropey bandwidth on 5 Live. I've memories of trying in vain to listen to the football updates on 909 and 693 MW throughout the 90's in the car, in Ireland. Fuzz, interference, randomly going loud and quiet....happy daze indeed.

You are right, I have missed off the Hit the North session. It would be great to find a better copy of that.

MW reception is more unstable than FM, particularly after dark, but decent reception ought to have been possible for somebody at the right location and with a good radio.

I can help with Halifax '91 and a better-than-usual (but still not great) Hit the North. I had all my old tapes transferred last year but then had a hard drive disaster so I've had to start again - will hopefully get to it soon though.

Mark, that's great. Many thanks.

That's quite a collection, Will. I don't have 4/10/91 either it seems! Nor, it seems, the last two. Quite some work to do here before I start sticking 'em together with the two 'Countdown' recordings!

Would it be possible to get the Hit The North session in lossless?

Yep of course. All in the fullness of time!
