Stephen, this is, again, absolutely brilliant. Are you/can you do a new rip of the 87 Limit gig? I'm sure quality could be improved on what we have if you have got an earlier gen. Oh, and is it just me or is Tunnel actually a proper song on the evidence of this gig rather than the semi improvised jam it appears to be?

Eamonn, well I thought it was pretty exciting. Sorry if I got yr hopes up for anything more. There is an unheard song coming eventually tho. Will, thanks. But the thanks must go to the chap who recorded the gig, the chap who got it from him and allowed me to circulate it, and the chap who gave it to me in the first place, whether they'd like to take credit or not!
The gig was recorded by Chap No. 1. He was apparently quite a Pulp fan 'back then'. He recorded 'a few' gigs I'm told. I have a feeling that only three are in existence. This, and the '87 Limit gig are two of those.
A chap who Jarvis used to know in the 80s got hold of these cassettes. This chap was in Sheffield bands around that time. He's not responded when I asked whether he wants any credit for this, so heigh ho!
Finally, I was given these tracks a little while ago by someone else who'd previously made contact with Chap 2. I decided to contact Chap 2 in order to get permission to share, and that permission I got.
Also, completists, I've just had an email saying there are eight tracks from this Rockwells gig. They're still on a 1st gen. tape at the moment but I've just been told I can have them. I'll just have to wait I suppose.
I had thought that getting permission for distributing this stuff was going to impossible, but I'm shocked at how easy it's been and how amenable these people are!
If only this was the case with the Bath '82 tape or the April '82 Sheffield Limit gig!
Saw119, I do have FLAC versions of the Limit gig, but now sure whether they're going to be hugely better or not. That's to come in a little while, though!
And yes, Tunnel does indeed appear to be a song. A short, structured song at that. Very odd!
Eamonn, well I thought it was pretty exciting. Sorry if I got yr hopes up for anything more.
Sorry if that came across as ungrateful, I was just thinking aloud if Back In LA had been played live and recorded other than at the Dolebusters gig. Your work on all these is very much appreciated.
With regards to the 1982 gigs, do you have any leads on who might have those recordings? And any luck getting in touch with that bloke, Paul Mills on other gigs he apparently recorded (unless he is one of the chaps you refer to)? On his blog he also states he has an old Russell and Jarvis interview, I think different to the one that most of us have heard, judging from the wiki perhaps it was this:
BBC Radio Sheffield - R.O.T.T.
Transmitted:circa 1984 Details: Interview with Pulp and broadcast of tracks from the Sudan Gerri demo. (Pulp appeared on this programme several times.)
Eamonn, not at all. I did reread your post and realised then you weren't being a horror :)
Back in LA was played at Dolebusters? Whaaaa...? Do you know something I've forgotten...?
I do have ideas on the story of the Bath gig, but I understand that it's not going to be available. In an earlier thread, Mark Sturdy notes that Wayne Furniss has it. Mark's previously stated that whilst Wayne let him hear various songs, he wouldn't let him take them away. So it's Wayne Furniss one needs to ask...politely!
As for the '82 Hallamshire...your guess is as good as mine. Someone on here might well have it, but one can often be restricted with the request of 'please don't distribute this' from whoever gave them the track.
I believe the interview Paul Mills has is more from 1986/7 rather than one this early.
Back in LA was played at Dolebusters? Whaaaa...? Do you know something I've forgotten...?
Oops, no, for some reason I thought the demo of Back In LA was a live recording, dunno why I linked it to Dolesbusters. So, this is the only live recording that we know of then, fair play for the unearthing!
And yes Will, that's the one I reckon. I'm surprised Premspeak 1's never been unearthed thus far. I think every other Pulp cassette comp's come to light bar this one, hasn't it...?
And Eamonn, the 'Back in LA' demo just *sounds* like a live recording :)
The Pulpwiki lists: Hydroelectric Dam Tillys Story (part 1) Little Girl (With Blue Eyes) The Will to Power Fairground There's No Emotion The Mark of the Devil Simultaneous Back in LA Breaking Down at My Door Srpski Jeb Life Must Be So Wonderful Being Followed Home Tillys Story (part 2) "and possibly others"
However, the tape in circulation (and included on PPF6) features only Hydroelectric Dam Tillys Story (part 1) Little Girl (With Blue Eyes) Fairground There's No Emotion The Mark of the Devil Simultaneous Breaking Down at My Door Srpski Jeb Being Followed Home Tillys Story (part 2)
so missing out on Will to Power, Back in LA and Life Must be So Wonderful. And possibly others.
I just need to wait 'til Nick Canute has time on his hands to dig out his tapes and hopefully copy/digitise them to get these 'missing songs'. I don't think it's his main priority though!
I'm not sure where the Pulpwiki setlist originates from.
I'm presuming some people will find this message. I've just received two 80s gigs, one of which I am very excited about listening to, and another is a different version of this '84 Hallamshire gig and I'm told it's better quality. Please find then, the 'new' Pulp Portfolio 005. I've also changed the sleeve art to represent the fact that the 'jam' track is separated here.
And let me know if you do think it's better quality. It's certainly double the file size of the original one I posted!
Curious thing about the version of Tunnel: there doesn't appear to be any guitar (or violin, for that matter). So what's Russell doing? Hitting some extra percussion maybe?

I hope that's true. I think I also hear some additional drumming though...
Question for you Mr saw119: do you know where in the uni the Maze Bar was?
To be honest I can't say for certain but the Union has changed quite alot recently. I would say that there are 2 possibilities. Downstairs in what is now University house on the bottom floor is a bar and also the large, and what I would call the main bar, that has an entrance on Glossop Rd. Sorry, it's not much help. I've been looking for a photo but cannot seem to find one online. The best, and only, one I can find at the moment is on the back cover of a Throbbing Gristle CD of a show from Sheffield Uni in 1980! I'll do some more research on this one.
Stephen, I suspect that bar at the back of the Union may have been 'Maze'. Dunno why. Just a feeling. I went to a Pulp night there last year! It seems apt :)
The room Stephen is describing (I think) is called the Raynor Lounge, and AFAIK it's always been called that (there's a plaque outside marking the opening).
If it's definitely in the Union complex (Sheff Uni Union own at least one other bar externally, but not sure for how long) I reckon the Maze Bar is now either 'Bar One' which is the large bar outside or the Interval Bar.
I've just spoken to my Boss, who used to be in bands back in the day (Bride Wore Black and Deathtrash apparently), and actually recalls seeing Pulp in the Maze Bar! (lucky sod!)
He reckons the Maze bar was a level up from Bar One, on the same level as the 'Lower Refectory'.
I don't know the layout well enough (I've been but I was never a Student there) so that would make it either the Interval bar, or the Foundry.
Given his description of size and so on, I reckon it's the Interval or the smaller room in Foundry & Fusion.
Stephen, I gave you last week some details about unlimited upload space I set up for you. You can upload the various portfolios in different quality (including the best).
I mean you should not consider to limit the possibilities for such a technical limitation whereas we can give you some help.
I remind you, because then, I can make the files available to the board.

Does Mediafire have a limit of how much you're allowed to put on it? I'm somewhere over 450MB at the moment. Couldn't find anything telling me what the maximum is though...
On Mediafire (when using the free service) I get a warning message when trying to upload a file larger than 200MB, so it might be necessary to split the file into smaller parts.
Just listened to the Rockwells gig in full. It really must take the crown for 'ropiest overall performance' and 'most boisterous crowd'. Very odd atmosphere. Maureen is very spirited though, and Blue Glow pretty damn good (i.e. nasty and creeping)..
What's the situation with Pulp Portfolio right now? Is there more material pending? Sorry, don't want to hurry you, just eager to hear this interview everyone keeps talking about.
Paul Mills recorded in excess of 30 minutes of chatter with Jarvis & Russell in 1987/8 (?). He put a small amount of this onto Premspeak, and he's given me the rest on one of his tapes. I was hoping to get hold of the Premspeak stuff (which he has in a digital format) so it can be added to the lengthier out-takes before I make it available.
I think a lengthy thank you email and discussion of what I've found on the tapes should go some way to sorting this. But....time. Essence. Yeah.
Other than that...just moved house, so not had a great deal of time for much in the way of Portfolios at the moment. But they will happen. Keep badgering :)
Fans of the shambolic B-Hive gig can rejoice - the rest of it is coming soon. And it's even worse than the first five tracks here. HURRAY! I've patched the two best run throughs from the original master in order to best counteract the huge difference in recording levels from about 22 - 33 minutes into the gig. It is a bad gig. But it is one of the earliest in circulation. Well,it's about to be anyway...!
It's a really bad gig. Yet the crowd are loving it. Three encores.
Fascinating to see that, even in '84, Jarvis was taunting those who called out for My Lighthouse.
Also interesting in that gig #1 on this NEW DOUBLE CD PACK was 19th Dec, the second gig 28th (if memory serves - can't be arsed checking). Three new songs are featured in the 2nd gig that aren't featured in the 1st (or any previous gig), suggesting a hectic rehearsal/writing period in late December '84.
Now, if my home computer connection didn't keep cutting out every five mins, I'd be able to upload this behemoth...
Ah, disc 2's been circulating for quite some time so probably ain't much of a surprise. Disc 1 (the last eight songs or so) is the real rarity here. As far as I'm aware, the tape that I recorded it from was the only copy in existence.
Until now.
Fly my pretty, fly!
Hmm, I must have missed the stuff on disc 2 the first time round. Just had a listen to the second half of disc 1, and the new stuff that has emerged is awesome, too. Currently having a listen to 'They Suffocate At Night', and it sounds great. Also had a listen to 'Little Girl (With Blue Eyes)' earlier, which also sounded really good. Although the gig has a reputation of being something of a disaster, the recordings of the two aforementioned songs still sound good (though a few people were rather drunkenly singing along).

Then you could upload it in, say, 50MB chunks. It's a bit of a convoluted way of going about it, but if there's no other way of uploading it with your current connection, it might be worth a shot.

I think it's just me that's given it that reputation :) Mind you, disc 2 is pretty shonky too. Again we get a very ratty Jarvis. Was December '84 a particularly bad time for him?
I think the B-Hive gig may well be where Paul Mills (who was in attendance) fell in love with Maureen. It was always one of his favourite Pulp tracks, although it doesn't feature in any gigs after this. He got the band to agree to him releasing it on Premspeak 1 a couple of years later.
Not sure if I've mentioned this before, but it's gonna break hearts if not. The chap who recorded disc 1 was one Clyde Hatter who used to be in various Sheffield bands around this time. Paul Mills mentioned that Clyde had had 'loads' of Pulp live stuff including an amazing one from...'82 I think? that Paul had heard. Myself and Mr. Sturdy managed to recently track down Clyde - now a hugely successful computer...person - to find out that all of the tapes are likely long since gone.
We wept.
Apparently Clyde used to take his tape recorded to pretty much anything. A bit like the Bridget Polk who never got the pay-off I suppose...
I thought it was Jarvis announcing 'My Lighthouse', but am happy to be persuaded otherwise. He seemed to take umbrage at the excitied, happy girls near the front (?) who kept shouting for it.
"How dare they request a song that is...a whole YEAR OLD?!" says The J (or the R) and launches into their second abandoned song of the night.
Yet the crowd do love the set...for some reason. There is a lot of yelling for the continual encores. Seems such a shame how Pulp weren't up for enjoying the experience themselves.
To me it sounds more like the clipped, sarcastic tones of Russell than the laconic, northerness of Jarvis. Actually, I'm also amazed by what seem to be the same girls singing along to Anorexic Beauty!
