After clicking on similar artists for Pulp, Roxy Music came up. I immediately liked them and went out and got all their records and was so mad I missed their brief US dates back around '01 I think.  Most people I come across like albums 1/2 the best but I think Stranded is the best followed by country life and Siren.  I recently saw an interview w/ Eno where he said Stranded was his favorite as well even though he's not on it of course.  I bought the Scott Walker CD boy child after reading he was producing the new pulp album and was totally into it from the first second of track one "The Plague" ... That led to the Walker Brothers etc...

A 'me too' on the Scott Walker, but also Artery. 'Into The Garden' would be up there in my list of all time favourite tracks now.

I checked out the Durutti Column and Psychic TV because of Jarvis. I also checked out Dory Previn because she was on Jarvis and Steve's mix and I love her. Also Jarvis has played Primal Scream several times on his show and that combined with the influence of a friend got me to listen to them and now they're my third favourite band.

Because Jarvis was in that Nick Cave video, I tried Nick Cave.

I tried very hard with Scott Walker, but it just didn't happen with me. Sorry, I did at least try!

Must be one of those new fangled interweb things, the 'magic music portal' or summat. In the old days I just listened to Mark Goodier's Evening Session to find out what other bands I liked.

I think it was just AMAZON.  When you do a search for an artist there's a like that says "similar artists" and Roxy Music came up first.  Chris Thomas produced album 5 "Siren" for them as well actually I think.

"Customers who bought this item also bought"?

I always thought there should be an iTunes genius (does that just pick a bunch of songs labelled as the same genre?) in the actual iTunes store so you could see similar music you don't yet own. If that feature does exist I couldn't find it...

Nice hat btw... or is that your hair?

I thought it was Amazon, it was 10 years ago though so maybe it was a different site. But it was a "similar artists" not a "customers who bought this etc..." so maybe it wasn't Amazon if that option isn't on their site.

Only one that directly comes to mind are Long Blondes. I gave a listen to Menswe@r after catching the end of their set at Theatre Royal and The Horrors after Hyde Park thanks to Pulp. I wouldn't say I got into any of them though.

I did give Leonard Cohen, Scott Walker and The Velvet Underground more of a listen, but I didn't get into any via Pulp.  Roxy Music were always a band I liked.  Perhaps, if anything I like I Will Survive a little more than I did pre-1993, but I've not got into Gloria Gaynor.

Leonard Cohen is definitely one, bought that yellow Greatest Hits LP as sort-of research for the book but really enjoyed it in its own right (and still do). Artery too, for similar reasons.

Spotify and Jango do it.  Spotify has the very similar Manic Street Preachers and The Jam among others. Jango is better.

i got into pretty much all bands i like now because of Pulp, at least indirectly. Because of them I scored the internet and started listening to indie radio and in general became interested.

I never thought of it that way... but actually I'd have to agree with that also.

Most the bands I like now are English.

Saint Etienne, Sir Scott Walker, possibly Roxy Music.
And various bands who claimed Pulp as an influence or journalists did in the past ten years (Franz Ferdinand, Maximo Park, T'Long Blondes etc.).
I should love Franz Ferdinand given my tastes but I think they're just alright.

I suspect I only listened to Pulp because of Suede.  In the wake of Animal Nitrate, there was a bit of a buzz about Pulp  re: Razzmatazz.

Found this scan of Select from the period, interestingly with a picture of Jarvis in a supermarket...

Yeah that was the infamous Select issue that helped kickstart Britpop (I think Stewart Maconie coined the term for the first time in one of the articles).

Sarah Cracknell was quite something back then wasn't she? *Sigh*

Yep.  I remember I was listening to Suede and Blur (Modern Life is Rubbish) and trying to find Razzmatazz in various record stores.  I didn't really see the connection at the time, especially concerning Blur, who seemed to have morphed into a Kinks tribute band.

As usual with Pulp, they were a little slow to get records out, it was six months after the article that Intro and then Lipgloss were released.
