Well that question would probably only apply to records pre-island, when you know, they had no money.
So which one and why ?
I think id be interesting to have them try a new version of Separations. It's a charming album, with the best bunch of songs from the 80s, early 90s... but with the quality speakers we got now, well at least to me, it sounds like a demo album. Instruments arent up to their potential on that record, clearly.
Songs like She's Dead, Love Is Blind or Death II would probably be upgraded to another level with the money and equipement they have now.

Personally, I think the production on Separations is pretty amazing, both for the time and now (especially the second side). I'm tempted to say 'Freaks', but I don't think Jarvis would be capable of carrying the menace in his voice through from the first time 'round...
It's an interesting one. Jarvis and various other band members have expressed dissatisfaction with the production on all of the '80s albums (and His'n'Hers, come to that). I'd probably vote for Freaks as it's possibly the least realised of the three due to time and money constraints - imagine if they'd been able to record those songs to the same standard as the Rattlesnake recording from a year later!
Of course, the one I'd really like them to record is the imaginary one with all the mid '80s songs that never made it to the studio at the time - Snow, The Day That Never Happened, Didn't Feel a Thing, My First Wife, Heart Trouble and the rest. Now that would be something.

My thoughts exactly. How I would dearly love to hear an album version of Snow, my god even a demo version! Without doubt that is my favourite '80's Pulp song at the moment, it is just brilliant. I have given it some thought and having originally considered a re-recording of 'It' I finally decided that I wouldn't like to them to re-record anything. Rather, I wish they had been able to record that 'East European Casio Disco' album that is previewed at the '87 Limit gig in late '87 to mid '88.
Don't care for the pre-Island records. What I really want it Jarvis to re-record the Charlotte Gainsbourg songs he wrote. Could be combined with some other songs he wrote for others.

Definitely His'n'Hers. I don't think the songs on It or Freaks are good enough to warrant re-recording, and I think Separations sounds ace. But His'n'Hers really falls flat, especially (and very sadly, seeing as it's the best track) on David's Last Summer. Plus if they re-recorded it, they could leave off Someone Like The Moon.
Has an album ever been successfully rerecorded? I liked Let It Be... Naked better than LIB, but that was re-produced so to speak rather than re-recorded.

When I first heard His'n'Hers I was a bit shocked as it didn't sound the way I expected having seen them live three of four times prior to its release, but now it seems right.
Someone Like The Moon has grown on me. I used to hate it, but now I do like it a lot. Very atmospheric.
I think We Love Life is probably the album that could do with some re-recording. Sunrise, Birds In Your Garden, Wickerman and Bad Cover Version are fine, but Minnie Timperly, The Trees, Weeds and I Love Life all sound far superior live and there could be better versions that could be coaxed from the band.
I rather like the sound of His n' Hers - after listening to the update of Blue Girls they played at the Flux festival, however, I'd love to hear a mature 'reimagining' of IT. I wonder too how Masters of the Universe could be improved with experience (and actually become "an album" in the fullest sense).

Not that i can think of. Odd tracks have been re-recorded for best ofs and stuff but i cant recall a band recording one of them album in full again. Now that's an idea for record labels

Didn't Suede completely re-record New Morning after the initial recording sessions 'cos they thought it was shit? It was still pretty crap when they'd finished rerecording. N.E.R.D. also re-recorded their first album.

I meant a re-recording that was publicly released. If we mean not released, then probably tons... Two are well known: Oasis re-recorded Definitely maybe and Dont Believe the Truth. there's also the aborted Beatles session in between let it be and abbey road that was a mix of tracks from those two records.
Elastica's second album was rerecorded in about six weeks. Lots of the 'original' versions made it out in one form or another, though - several tracks on their 6 track EP, and another on a film soundtrack or somesuch.
How dumb am I?! I'm the proud owner of both versions of In Search Of... By N.E.R.D and completely forgot about it. In that instance I'm pretty sure the vocals are the same but they started from scratch with the actual music. Has anyone heard Johnny Wakelin's re-recording of In Zaire? He murders his own song!
Vic Godard rerecorded Subway Sect's legendary lost unreleased debut album a couple of years ago, having finally resigned himself to Bernie Rhodes not coughing up the tapes anytime soon.
How's this for an idea: Different Class rerecorded with no concessions whatsoever to mainstream pop sensibilities.

Y'mean if Mark Webber managed to liberally spread some La Monte Young shaped vibes over the whole thing and Jarvis and Steve decided most tracks should be remixed a la 'That Boys Evil'?
And Russell made Jarvis eat a cake on every vocal take?
I think we'ev established that quite afew albums have been rerecorded now! I still wouldn't like Pulp to rerecord anything though. I just wish they'r had the chance to record more in the '80's. Imagine if they'd done Peel sessions through the entire decade :sigh:
Back in the late '90s, Cheap Trick re-recorded their second album In Color with Steve Albini producing. A much rawer, harder-rocking version of what was originally a pretty tame guitar-pop album. It's great, but they never released it. It's very easy to find online though.
Also, didn't Kate Bush just release a bunch of re-recordings and re-mixes of some of her stuff?
I would've liked Pulp to have been able to do Freaks properly in '86-'87, but I wouldn't want them to try again. I think We Love Life could've been better, maybe if it were a little rawer, kinda like the Peel versions of "Sunrise," "I Love Life," etc.
Yeah We Love Life, that natural album that dont really sound natural. Maybe they could release a naked version, ala Beatles, without all the producer's overdubbs.
Different Class: Considerably More Indie Than Yow! Edition
Seeing as Fred called me the other week for invoking Catherine Tate (even if just for the purposes of sending myself up), I very much hope that early '90s Harry Enfield references will be looked upon dimly.
