Following on from some bits and bobs that have been discussed of late, just how many different mixes/masterings of the Freaks tracks are available? I have seen mention of both They Suffocate at Night and Master of the Universe available in slightly different mastering, but I'm not sure if I've heard these or not. Are there more out there too?

As far as I know the alternate Master of the Universe is the 'sanitised' single version which substitutes the word 'vegetates instead of 'masturbates', it is on the Masters of the Universe compilation. There is a single edit of They Suffocate at Night. Demo versions of a few of the songs are in circulation- Anorexic Beauty (x2), Don't You Know, I Want You. Anyone know of any I've forgotten about there?

Stephen (not Sarah!) cheers for that. I was thinking more of the different masterings/etc. that have been mentioned, such as MOTU itself with handclaps and audible guitar, or this 'better' mix of They Suffocate at Night from the 12" vinyl etc. etc.

I think the version of TSAN on the single is the only different mastering which is in circulation.  The single version of MOTU doesn't sound any different to me, except for the two obvious lyrical changes.

I have an MP3 of the 7" edit of TSAN if you're interested.

EDIT-
I've uploaded it here:http://www.sendspace.com/file/xtwa2b

Cheers for that, Will. I used to have it...and now I do again.

Re:the different mixes, I thought Mark Sturdy or someone had mentioned handclaps and a louder guitar on one version of Master of the Universe...

He did, but it's not something that is in circulation, as far as I know.

Will, thanks for that. I clearly had the wrong end of the stick!

Thanks for the mp3 of They Suffocate at Night (edit). Interesting that is sounds like its been sped up and is therefore in a different key. Is that an encoding error on the mp3, or did it actually sound like that on release?

Thanks for the mp3 of the 7" edit of They Suffocate at Night. It sounds like its been sped up and is therefore in a different key. Is that how it sounded on release or is it maybe an error in the mp3 capture/encoding?

Ah yes, just checked in the book and it says the 12" mix of 'Suffocate...' is different to the album version. Now....does anyone have it...?

Errm... the thing is, it's sort of different but sort of not actually different at all. It's the same mix, the same edit, just slightly better sound quality. The Master of the Universe album actually seems to have the same master as the 12" as it sounds somewhat better than on Freaks (although still not QUITE as good as the 12").

The download posted above of They Suffocate at Night (7inch edit) sounds slightly speeded up (making the song a semitone higher). Is that a problem with the mp3 or how it actually sounded on vinyl?

I noticed that, too. Quite enjoyed it sounding a bit lighter, tho. Do remember tho that vinyl speed is always somewhat variable.

Been doing some investigating...
It seems that the speed of the usual version of They Suffocate at Night is about 101bpm (beats per minute), but the mp3 of the 7inch version is faster at about 106bpm. Both the mp3 and video posted above last 4 minutes. This is the same as listed on PulpWiki for the length of the 7inch edit, however the mp3 has a later fadeout retaining around 15 seconds extra of the track. If the listing for the length of the track on PulpWiki is 100% correct (based on the original vinyl playing at 45rpm) then this would imply that the track was deliberately speeded up for the single release (and therefore pitch-shifted too), either so it comfortably fit on the vinyl, or because the record company said the edit could be no longer than 4 minutes....

Would be cool if someone with the original vinyl could double-check by playing it on a decent turntable (cheap ones do have variable speed problems) and report back....

Cheers
Steve
