Dear Pulpites,

Could anyone direct me to any It-era Pulp photos? I've seen the one from Sheffield Star showing Jarvis, Wayne, Simon, David and Peter Boam, but it's not really great quality (although the photo itself is very good). Obviously there's a lot of photos of the first Peel sessions lineup, and also loads existing with Saskia and Magnus Doyle on, but there doesn't seem to be much for It itself...

Weener,

Thanks for that. I hadn't intended paying for actual copies, though - just finding somewhere on the web where they might be!!

It came out April 18 1983. The only gig that Pulp seemed to play to promote it was the show at the Crucible Theatre on 3rd April. the lineup is Peter Boam, David Hinkler, Jarvis Cocker, Tim Allcard, Magnus Doyle. Do you want pictures before this? Alot of the It promo pics are solo Jarvis.

The strange-but-true thing is that there don't seem to be any photos of the full Pulp line-up taken between autumn 1982 (that one Stephen mentions - there is another one from the same set which I don't have but once saw in Wayne Furniss' scrapbook!) and early 1984.

All the photos that were used to publicise It and Everybody's Problem are either just Jarvis, or Jarvis, Saskia and Tim. Not quite sure what the reason for that was - possibly just that the line-up wasn't very fixed at the time, so Tony Perrin probably thought it was a good idea to stick to Jarvis plus whoever else looked interesting.

There are a few live photos, but none of them (that I've seen) have the whole band - there were 11 people onstage at that Crucible concert!

That one is a good photo, Sarah. It always looked to me like Tim (?) was hanging himself.

Autumn '82. Is that the date of the Jarvis/Peter/Simon/David/Wayne one, then? Does a better copy exist other than the Sheffield Star one that appears to be from a microfilm reader...?

I like the Jarvis/Saskia/Tim photos, but for what I'm looking to use it for, I was hoping to capture the 'It' "line-up" (for want of a better word) a little more fully. And Simon was a particularly large part of that...

Yes, that's the Autumn '82 one. Taken at some Sheffield Star Band of the Year type event I believe. I've never been able to find a better copy of the whole thing. However, you may notice that half of it appears in the book! On the original newspaper report (which you can see on Pulp Wiki at http://www.pulpwiki.net/Pulp/Scrapbook1980-1983) it's sliced in two, and the original of the part with Jarvis and Peter Boam seems to have been lost.

Weener - that's interesting about the agency, how did you find out about that? Any idea exactly what photos they have?

There was another agency called SIN (Syndicated International Network) that had a lot of very early Pulp photos taken by Zbysiu Rodak. However, SIN appears to no longer exist (or at least their website is gone).

I work on a picture desk of a newspaper and magazine, I was nosying in the old library files and saw Ross Parry credited on some old pics. Sorry I can't email them out to anyone!

S.I.N rings a bell I'll do some digging tomorrow at work and try and work out who owns them now

That would be wicked, thankyou. I contacted Zbysiu directly years ago and he seemed to have mislaid his negatives of Pulp. Don't know if they've turned up since!
