Does any one have the original broadcast of this song from the John Peel show? If I recall, there was no bird sound in the intro, and also sounded better than what was released.

It was a session track. They also played 'Bob Lind' and 'Duck Diving'. I recorded it onto cassette from the broadcast but don't thing I've seen it since! I'll have a look

Are you sure weed? They did a Peel session in '01 and it was Sunrise, I Love Life, Weeds & Duck Diving. I can't find any record of a session where they did Birds and Bob Lind. Love to hear it though if they did!

Yeah, what Saw said. Never heard of the version dixie mentions or a Bob Lind session version.

I think Peel did broadcast some preview tracks from the album - BCV was another. Maybe the version of Birds that he played was a different mix from what ended up on the record?

The Birds in Your Garden (John Peel show, 16th August 01):

I have listened to it a couple of times and the mix does sound slightly different to me. Also, as dixie wrote, there is no bird song at the start.

Sounds like the same mix to me, minus the birdsong at the beginning. I think any perceived difference is just due to the limiters that tracks go through when they are played on radio.

The missing birdsong could be down to it being an unreleased single/radio version - It would have been a bit pointless having 15 seconds of birdsong before the song actually starts for a single release/radio play!

You might well be right. I've listened to it a few more times and I'm not at all confident I can hear any difference now. I'm aware there's some compression when songs are broadcast on the radio, still maybe my judgement was influenced by that.

Here's Bad Cover Version (John Peel Show, 15th August 01)

I don't think I can hear any difference, but I'd be interested to know if anybody else can.

Dont think there is any difference between BCV and the official releases, which is a shame, as I was hopeful that the mixes would be different as I knew Birds was different from memory. Other tracks broadcast im sure were Minnie, Weeds, Birds, BCV and DEFINATELY Sunrise.

Definately a slightly different mix for Birds, the keyboards in certain parts are far more prominant. Especially in the 2nd verse.

The John Peel Wiki is an excellent source for finding what was played and when. There are tracklistings for most of John Peel's shows around 2001.

I'm sure it was this session? - not 'Birds...' then but I thought they had played 'Bob Lind' in a session just before the album came out. I don't think I labeled the cassette correctly but I'll have to find it and listen now. Maybe I'm completely wrong and it was just the studio version but I'm pretty sure it was a session track.

-edit Just looked at the wiki page Will linked to - looks like he played the album version a couple of times around then and that'd be what I'm confusing it with. I'd still like to find that tape though! Gonna start rummaging!

Peel played Weeds II and Roadkill, too. Made for some really unusual Pulp radio moments!
