I've been catching up with Jarvis's BBC 6 music show, which he apparently found time to pre-record on Tuesday last week. He played a recording he made of an Ian McEwan story in 1994 set to an ambient background, which he said had never been broadcast before. He's lost a bit in the middle so he had to re-voice that part - interesting to hear how his voice has changed.

The story has suitably Pulp themes - so much so that you could believe that he'd written it himself.

I really enjoyed this yesterday, nice little companion to David's Last Summer. It was surprising how much lower his voice is now!

I have a story by Ian McEwan read by Jarvis on tape somewhere ... must have recorded more than one.

Edit: no it is the same story. guess he never knew about it being used or I have some illegal leak.

Yeah, it was broadcast on the Mark Radcliffe show in late '93 / early '94. I have it too. The background music is Eno.

So maybe they're the same thing and Jarvis was wrong on his show - what he played in its original form was broadcast?

I had this on tape too. Used to tape a lot of the Mark Radcliffe shows. I've got recordings of Julianne Reagan from All About Eve reading Philip Larkin too. Great show- Mark had an ear for a good reading voice and the imagination to introduce a bit of late night esoteric culture to Radio one's output. Did anyone else tape it?

Yes, got quite a few tapes somewhere, including some parts of this story and memorably John Hegley, Kenicke taking over the studio, Broadcast in session & the last ever show.

Yeah, I've noticed that. And also some kind of an accent... It's funny who much a voice can change in 17 years, mostly because 17 years ago Jarvis was in his 30's, already an adult

I'm in China, and my tapes are in a loft in Bexhill-on-Sea, but maybe next time I get back there, sure.

I'm a teacher-trainer, and never get to go out as I have a young baby to look after.
So I may in fact have the least rock-star lifestyle out of everyone on here. (sad face)
