As my old Pulp collection continues to increase, I spent the afternoon listening to Sudan Gerri for the first time in years.
And I wondered, as I did not used to wonder, 'what was the purpose of the recording?'
If it was purely a demo, then why cut all 11 tracks? Surely a demo - to sell yourself to labels, etc. should be shorter?
Is there any evidence that copies of Sudan Gerri were sold at gigs or anything? I think only of my own days in bands before even the flimsiest of label interest when we would record 'demos' but treat them as albums and sell them at gigs accordingly.
Could it be more accurate that Sudan Gerri is/was a self-released album designed to sell at gigs or even local record shops? The tracklist certainly works as an album.
I don't think it was sold at gigs in its entirity, although I believe one or two tracks got used on cassette compilations later on. I guess the purpose of it was mainly to get an idea of what the (then-new) line-up and songs sounded like for the band's own reference. Plus I think they were experimenting with finding the best way of capturing their new sound on tape, feeling that the previous 'Bad Maureen' demo (done in the same studio as It) hadn't done justice to the more garagey side of what they were doing - hence its title, presumably.

Just listened to the 'Bad Maureen' "I Want You" for the first time in a while. God, it's bad! Has anyone heard other 'Bad Maureen' songs apart from Coy Mistress? Are they similarly wreathed in echo and somewhat painful on the ears...?
woah! I had no idea there were any downloads on pulpwiki!
Just downloaded Sudan Gerry and three live tracks (my first wife, going back to find her and don't you want me anymore?), was having a little listen whilst googling and suddenly thought 'what on earth is this?!' - I was hearing Silence for the first time!

I don't think that version of I Want You is too bad - the echo is a bit much though, I agree! I've heard Little Girl from the same session and it's it's still kinda murky, if maybe not quite as silly on the reverb front. Maureen remains elusive though.
What's interesting to me is that those songs (Little Girl and I Want You) were so close to their final form as early as January 1984. Most of the rest of Freaks seems to have been written that year too. Can't help but wonder whether that album would have been better if they'd made it a year or two earlier, before they'd started getting a bit sick of the songs and each other.

PS. any more downloads I should know about on pulpwiki?
PulpWiki isn't really for sharing recordings, so those downloads are a bit of an anomaly really. They were on my old 'Nites of Suburbia' site and I wanted to keep them available when I removed that site and set-up PulpWiki instead.
I think the only other download is Night of Suburbia (live) here (not that I recommend it).

Mark, it seems that it wouldn't be the last time that Pulp 'sat' on an album for too long. Even by the time they come to recording 'Anorexic Beauty' for Freaks, I'm starting to get bored of the different versions! The novelty of "Let's have Jarvis on drums and Magnus on guitar" must have become a bit of a chore two years down the line when they finally recorded it 'for real'...
