Some of you might be interested in this. There are currently original copies of the They Suffocate at Night video and Ping Pong Jerry demo tape on Ebay. The chap selling them, Paul Mills, is a decent fella who knew the band around this time - he put out some of the Ping Pong Jerry tracks on the Premonition local compilation cassettes that he did in the mid/late '80s, and collaborated with Jarvis on a couple of unreleased instrumental tracks at the time. I can vouch for the quality of what he's selling! The ideal Christmas present for the Pulp fanatic in your life.

Theres been a few demo tapes knocking around - I bought that FON demo tape from Energy Music for £100 at the time !!! Live On, Space, Ou, and Babies - ahh them were the days !!

Ping Pong is a good demo - Simultanious is better than the released version in my opinion - Back In LA I just love the punk eliment in it, Can you elaborate on these unreleased instrumentals Mark? I seem to remember you sending me a dancy uptempo instrumental once but never got any other info about it?

I thought these got mentioned in the book but maybe they didn't. I've never heard them but Jarvis and Paul recorded a couple of tunes on a 4-track home studio thingy just before Jarvis went to London, so around August 1988 I guess. Apparently it's sleazy movie soundtrack sort of stuff.

Hmm I cant recall reading that in the book - then again so crammed full of information it be easy for things to be missed I guess. I have definately heard an instrumental that was meant to be by Jarvis ( I just cannot think of the source of where I got it from ) it may be on my old brick mp3 player I will dig it out sometime. It was very experimental, electronic piano for keys - odd bass line - strange electronic drum rhythm - sounded like it could have fit into This House Is Condemned - the audio was poor quality but definately sounded like it could have fit on Separations so the year you just gave could fit in.

Maybe it didn't make it in.

I don't think what you're referring to will be one of these tracks - they've never made it into circulation as far as I know. The track I sent you was on the end of a preview tape of Separations, even though it's clearly not part of the album. Probably just some bit of messing about from the sessions.

Seperations preview tape? Nice...what else was on it? Going Back To Find Her? I can't believe Leo VK's cover remains the definitive version of that song...roll on Seperations deluxe after Pulp's world-conquering comeback...(though I don't think it's been established whether GBTFH was left as an instrumental demo or if vocals were added).

As an aside, speaking of 'world-conquering', anyone see how many copies of their new album Take That sold this week? Over half a million apparently! Biggest opening week sales since the bag of shite that was Be Here Now.
A lot of women in their late 20's/early 30's reliving their teens... I suppose we'll be doing the same next summer.

Hah. No, nothing like that. Just the album as released - same versions, in horrible sound quality, with this funny little instrumental snippet at the end.

Going Back To Find Her did indeed have lyrics - there are 2 versions of it in existance both being live - unless there are others floating about.

Aye, I know the live versions, but I think in Truth And Beauty Nick commented that it was left unfinished in the studio.

Can't believe you spent a hundred quid on a few demos by the way you mad bastard!

Ahh yes sorry i misread your sentence before - lol yeah a bit mad wasnt i - back in the day of university and student loans..... was worth it though to hear how raw Babies was and the original mix of OU - forget who was quoted saying this but " OU when demoed sounded more like a live performance" - shame they couldnt get that impact with Live On - that song died in the studio :(

Hum...

Very interesting for the video.

As some of you may know from dimeadozen I'm able to to transfer to DVD with good quality. So If anyone here is trying to get it, and want to see the complete (for the first time?) video on DVD quality, please get in touch.

Of course, I'll try to bid on it, but certainly not if it's too much expensive (I'm not a Pulp fanatic in the first place). And if I happen to own it, I promise to share a good VOB with you guys !

If my job weren't up for 'discussion' next week, I'd be pouring stupid amounts of money at these things :(

Much as the Pulp tracks themselves are relatively easy to track down these days, that Bacon Slicer tape itself is ridiculously rare. I've never heard of anyone having a copy other than this one. The perfect Christmas gift for the Pulp obsessive in your life!

I want that Little Girl poster! Never seen that anywhere before, so quite a rarity one would presume.

I've just found my cassette recording of Pulp's gig at the Limit Club in Sheffield on March 3rd 1987, with a ticket for the gig as the cover. I'm going to digitise the recording and post it on my blogspot, and the carefully removed ticket is now up for grabs:

Happy Winter Solstice!
