Blimey, not sure how I've managed to miss this, but anyway.
The Beat Is The Law, a documentary about music in Sheffield though the mid 1980s, was released on DVD back in April. Lots here of interest to Pulp fans - extensive intervies with Jarvis, Russell, Candida, Nick and Hawley, plus lots of related parties like Dave Taylor (FON records), Charlie Collins (Clock DVA/The Box, later in Venini), Kath Mackey (Steve's mum!) and more.
I posted on here about it when I went to the preview screening last year, but it seems there are a few extra treats that have been added since then. Foremost amongst those are footage of Mark of the Devil from the 1985 Dolebusters gig, and the video to Manon. I'm pretty stunned about both of these myself, mainly because I've been looking for them with no success whatsoever since about 1996!
You can get the DVD for about 15 quid from the site linked above. I've just done so, and would recommend anyone else to do the same!
Oh, and the end credits music? Rattlesnake.

Yeah, I saw all this mentioned on PulpWiki and meant to post about it. I'm a littke bummed. Made in Sheffield's DVD got a small, but decent publicity push here in States -- it was even screened at a bar in my city -- but for this one, which has so much more Pulp material and interviews, isn't even coming out in region 1.
The third documentary is going to be about the '90s, right? That will obviously have the most Pulp material of all.

Got my copy today and just had time to have a peep at the Pulpy extras. What's interesting about Manon is that it's actually a live take - just Jarvis, Russell and Magnus I think, playing the song straight to a single camera. The sound quality isn't brilliant so no idea if the plan was eventually to overdub this with the studio version - or indeed what the purpose was of the video at all!
There's only about half of Mark of the Devil from Dolebusters - apparently these videos are from Russell's collection and that's all he has. Still really interesting to see though.
I think there may be a tiny bit of Lay of the Land on there too - Steven, if you're out there, did you guys ever play a Dolebusters event in Weston Park?

I agree that this DVD is definitely worth getting.
The very nice artwork done by The Designers Republic includes various old gig posters and flyers printed on the inside of the DVD case. I notice that Pulp are listed on a poster for a Dolebusters event at Weston Park on 5th July 1986. This appears to be a previously forgotten live appearance, and I'm going to add it to the PulpWiki list. But first, I wonder Mark, do you have any idea whether they did actually appear? They apparently played at the Tropic Club in Bristol the night before.
Honestly? Not sure. Most of my '80s gig dates that I dug up came from either the Sheffield Star pop pages and the fliers collected in the Pulp People scrapbook, and there's no mention of a Dolebusters '86 appearance in either of those. All perfectly feasible though, and I might well have missed something.
This news story does suggest that Pulp played for Dolebusters in Weston Park at some point, although they might just have had a copy of the same flyer!
My favourite bit in the inside cover is the flyer where they're apparently trying to convince labels to release one of their tapes as a 12" EP - presumably the 'Ping Pong Jerry' demo.

I am indeed out there Mark.
I don't think I played that one with LOTL, I think I'd left by that time so it's probably the first one they played with the new member of the band. LOTL played one gig with Pulp earlier that year at the Student Union bar at Sheffield University. Russell also played violin on one of our demos as well, dunno if it exists anymore as I don't have a copy, the song was called 'North to South' anyway....for all you completists.
I haven't seen the 'Manon' clip or the footage from the 'Dolebusters' gig, or 'The Beat Is The Law' for that matter, anyway funny how all this stuff eventually gets an airing.
Hope you're keeping well.

Ah yes, might be the line-up after you. To be honest the only reason I thought it must be LOTL was that it's a tuneful guitar-based song with a wobbly viola on it, which fits the descriptions I've heard! Didn't spot anyone in the line-up who looked like you, but it's not a great picture so wondered whether you might be in there somewhere.
Paul Mills has a tape of Pulp's set from that Shef Uni (Maze Bar) gig - don't know if he has your part as well. Not great quality sadly.
Didn't know about Russell guesting on one of your demos either - thanks for that.

I've heard the Manon video is available on the extras but I couldnt find it anywhere on mine. Just a small clip on the actual film with talking over the top. Am I missing something? Also Rattlesnake wasnt on the end credits, it was some other song by another band

I think you might have got Fanfare For The Common People rather than the 80's Special! You need 'em both to get everything. Also, Made In Sheffield is the first part of the series of docs but features no Pulp, concentrates on Cabaret Voltaire, Human Laegue, Artery etc, but plenty of Jarvis and Saskia being interviewed about the Sheffield scene. But Fanfare features that amazing Leadmill 91 footage.
