Hello there, fine visitors of the Bar Italia forum.

I don't get much chance to read or post here these days, so I'm grateful to the mods for keeping such a good eye on things, and for all the posters who fill the board with such good stuff to find every time I do get a chance to pop my head round the door.  I still love Pulp (I'm even starting to like Further Complications, I don't know what's going on);  this place has been up and running for over ten years now (which is scary in a good way) and if it may be quieter than it was in 2001, it remains awesome.  Keep it up.

HOWEVER!

PROBLEM!

About a million years ago, I subscribed to the ad-free, premium version of this board hosting doodad, on the basis that it was only a few quid a month and it was worth it to have no banner ads etc.

Around a year and a half ago - possibly a bit longer than that, actually - I changed my bank account (and associated credit card) details, but totally forgot to change the payment for the board over with it.  Now, every other online doodad I forgot to notify (for there were several.  I know, it's hard to believe, what with me being so organised and all) sent me a stroppy e-mail along the lines of "You oafish clod, your details appear to have stopped working, and you have not paid us this month.  Please do so, or we will stop your use of this particular online doodad.  Yours faithfully, The Boys. (PS: We break thumbs)".

But not Activeboard.

So, there's me not really noticing that they haven't been taking my seven or eight dollars a month (well, actually, it's a nominal fee of $4 a month, with extra charged on top when there are more than 10,000 page views, but let's not complicate things) for at least 18 months, and there's them apparently not doing anything about it, just building up a bigger and bigger outstanding balance which I'm completely oblivious to.

Anyway, today I received an ominous letter in a weird envelope, printed in BIG LETTERS on bright yellow paper, sent from somewhere in Canada and finding its way to my home address, demanding payment for about £80.  "What the fuck?", quoth I.  But no, looking at the board, they have indeed just allowed the account to get hugely in arrears.

Now.  This is ENTIRELY MY FAULT for being such a tool (don't all jump at once to correct me there), but I'm quite, quite skint and don't really have a spare eighty quid to throw at this just now.  So, er, here's the thing (and I'm looking at the floor here)... does anyone who, like, really enjoys using this forum want to chip in a couple of pounds via the Community Tip Jar thing before I pay the rest off?

Embarrassingly, your name shows up automatically if you make a donation and choose to provide it, although the sinister faceless software does at least say "thanks", which is something, I guess.

Anyway, I won't think any less of anyone here if nobody wants to contribute (this is a mess of my own making, after all) but any donation, no matter how small, would be much appreciated.

Right, begging over, I've got to get back to work.

Steve

is that the contribute thingy at the bottom? I have 'contributed' a couple of times but not for aaaages - wasn't sure if it worked or not! Anyway, assuming it is, I'll be good for a tenner.

I'm brassick an'all but as the, (by some considerable, sad distance) forum's most frequent poster, I'll chuck in a few quid.

Any chance your workload will ease and Bar Italia will be restored to its full glory this decade, Steve?

Just made a donation via paypal, but it doesn't look like anything has come off the total at the bottom of the page, can you see if it has gone thorough at your end?

Er... Brilliantly, it seems it doesn't actually show from my end (not yet anyway), but the amount has definitely gone down a little bit, so a big Thank You to everyone who's donated so far.

Steve

EDIT: Gnuk, and just as I post that, my accounts page updates to show your donation.  Thanks Pye, much appreciated.

JayJay: Yes, it is that one. Cheers! (For anyone else: it is the tiny "contribute" link hidden away at the end of the last sentence in the "Community Funding" bit at the bottom of the front page. I should probably have made that a bit clearer, sorry.)

Barcroft: Thank you! Anything at all helps, I'm very grateful.

Weed: ... Duck egg?

Eamonn: (sorry I didn't see this before) - Yes, it is my intention to have the full site back (in the full effect) at some point this year, providing I can get my old computer working again. Time flies; it's been down for many years now, hasn't it? Christ. I need to get my arse in gear.

Thanks to anyone thinking of chucking a quid or two in, it all makes a difference. (I feel like a chugger now).

Why not have ads anyway?    On other boards like this they aren't that intrusive, and  it would make the board free.  I think the board just starts to have ads if you don't pay the bills (that what is implied in their statement).

A fair question, that.

It's not *just* the ads, but I do hate them, and that was something a few people specifically complained about back when we were on the old-style Boardhost forum; I know it sounds silly, but I really wanted a band as important as Pulp to have a good, proper-looking forum that didn't have popups and ads everywhere, that looked like someone actually cared. Ironic given that I then forgot to pay for it for months on end.

No, there are a couple of other things too (mostly just graphical and minor admin features I wanted to have) - but in any case, it doesn't appear that you can switch back and forth, e.g. going to the freebie version once you've signed up for the full version; it's seemingly one or the other, unless I'm being dopey. The "your account" bit of the admin panel only gives me options to pay outstanding bills and delete the board, not change the subscription package.

To my mind it's worth keeping it this way rather than scrapping it and starting again, I just had a bit of a shock getting a demand in the post and realising they'd not been taking any money for so long. Now that so many people have put in so much money (thank you very much!), it's looking a bit more manageable, and I'll try and clear what's left the next time I get paid.

A serious question for a moment. Do people really still want the full site back, given that almost all the information that was available (and a lot of stuff that wasn't) is on the wiki now anyway? (If it's the reviews and article bits people miss, I still have copies of everyone else's submissions in their original form readily available, and as for my own ramblings, I can EXCLUSIVELY! reveal that I'm planning a (third) blog dedicated to a song-by-song examination/celebration of every single Pulp and Pulp-related record, in the manner of my Different Class piece, only, er, more so.)

Steve - "duck egg" = a bit of a dafty! It's not an uncommon phrase from my neck of the woods.

Other band forums - even some official, I find off putting due to the volume of adds and spam. I admire this board as spammers don't get much chance to ruin it for everyone else.

I do miss the old site as a research tool and database but you're right to point out that PulpWiki has kind of taken over this role.

Yes! Not only was it ace in itself, it was such a major piece of work that I think it would be a shame to have it disappear forever. Judging by the past, um, 7 or so years I know it's not really going to be realistic to expect it to become a regularly updated 'live' site like it was in '99-'01ish, but it would be nice to at least have it out there in mothballed form like Space used to be.

Speaking of which, does anyone know roughly when Space first started? It must have been around 1995 I reckon, which, if you consider the evolution of that site to Bar Italia to this forum as a single website (slightly tenuous I know), must make it one of the longest-running band websites anywhere ever. Which is quite cool.

I think most of us miss the old site. For a nostalgic look back, you can always check out the internet archive project.

http://www.archive.org/

It only has this site as far back as 2002, but it is still interesting to have a look around the old place (at least the links that work)

The Space page is archived as far back as '99 and last time I had checked it, most of the links still worked.

Well that is good to know. As stated above, I will get my backside in gear. It was mostly ready to go live, I just need to retrieve the hard drive from my old PC and put it in one which actually works.

Space was *mothballed* in 1996. From memory, I think it was running (on Manchester University's own webspace, before commercially-available and financially-affordable webhosting was commonplace) from about '93 or so. Anthony (no idea what he's up to now, sadly) did reviews of Intro and His 'n' Hers when they came out, and actually seems to have lost interest a bit when the band exploded into superstardom; the Different Class-era coverage is noticeably thinner and less enthusiastic than the wealth of heartfelt coverage of material from the early Nineties.

Cor, that's quite remarkable, really.

I would pay to have the site back, dare I say it, ahead of the forum. As much as I enjoy the myriad of comments on here and the great feeling of finding like minded souls, the thing that attracted me to Bar Italia was the site. The review snippets and comments that accompanied the songs gave them another life and often sent me back to listen further.  Mothballed is fine, but there was so much good stuff on there, it would  be a shame not to ressurect it.  I reckon I have a dozen or more posts asking about its return down the years.
