Well, everyone's weighing in on the Best of the Decade Lists, and I thought I might have my say.
I listened to a lot of music this decade, but most of it was old. MP3 allowed me to discover tons of forgotten and obscure bands that I now love. This makes compiling a list of new(ish) music extremely difficult. The past century of recorded music is now all blurred together in my head. I'm sure there are albums I love that came out in the last decade that I have mistakenly assumed were from previous decades. So this list is not exhaustive, and it is also not representative of my tastes.
This list, ultimately, represents the new albums I discovered this decade that I found myself returning to, or albums that surprised me with their strength. In some cases, it's just one song that gets me. In other cases, its the whole package. This list is also heavily weighted to the first half of the decade, as I genuinely think music got worse and worse over the course of the decade.
This was also the decade when a lot of bands released very promising demos and pre-album EPs, but then turned out very lackluster albums. (See Voxtrot, Long Blondes, Pulp) and the decade when some great bands eschewed albums altogether.
1- Happy Supply - Crucial Cuts 2- The Delgados - The Great Eastern 3- Baxendale - You Will Have Your Revenge 4- Hefner - We Love the City 5- Postal Service - Give Up (I think I need to justify this one because there's a lot of hate out there for this band. It took me years to admit it myself, and all the commercialization made it hard, but I think 'Such Great Heights' is the best song of the decade. If you disagree, you're probably wrong.) 6- Jens Lekman - Oh You're So Silent Jens 7- Jarvis - The Jarvis Cocker Solo Album (I'll admit, it has 3 or 4 great songs) 8- Art Brut - Bang Bang Rock n Roll 9- Arcade Fire - Funeral 10- M.I.A. - Kala
OK, not a great list... but it's better than Jarvis' list.
Yours?

For some reason, the idea of compiling a best-albums-of-the-decade doesn't appeal to me, so I'm going to write out the Best Songs of the '00s playlist I made on iTunes.

Probably the smarter way to go seeing as 'the album' as a pop music institution is dead. There are a lot of songs out there that I like on albums I otherwise can't stand.
But trying to compile a list of songs from the thousands I heard this decade can be very intimidating, and would consume way more time than it's actually worth. Maybe I'll give it a try once I'm on holiday break.
It's funny though. I still like albums. I have a best of '09 album list. But for the some reason, the whole best-of-'00 album list thing... I can't be bothered, for whatever reason.

The tracks I've chosen aren't in order of best/favourite, cos that would take too long to muse over. Instead, choosing my artists by ''year'' in Windows Media Player these are my faves...no doubt I've left a few out. I have managed to choose an album for each year though.
Similar to FussFree, this decade was one in which I discovered and listened to a hell of a lot of singers and bands that released stuff from before this decade. I was 15 on the 1st of Jan 2000 so most of my musical education has come in this past decade. In fact when the millenium bug was due to strike the only Pulp album I knew (albeit inside-out) was Different Class. That New Year's Eve, December 31st 1999, an Irish tv station broadcast the ''The Park Is Mine'' film from Pulp's gig at Finsbury Park in the summer of '98. I taped it ( I spent Millenium Eve helping my Dad out at a gig he was playing in a pub...think I got roped into singing Don't Look Back In Anger). Little did I know at the time just how much that band would occupy my thoughts and soundtrack my life over the next decade. Anyway...this thread isn't about Pulp but music in general, so this is some of my favourite contemporary stuff that kept me smiling (or feeling sad) and humming over the past ten years.
