She's A Lady
Do You Remember The First Time?
Lipgloss

-----------------

Now here's the bit where I need your help :) Does anyone know if the Naked City version of Babies is any different to the one broadcast on Butt Naked? If it is then I'll have to ask a kind soul to lend me their copy...

I'm using the Get Frisky With Pulp bootleg as a source for the audio so that should sound clean as a whistle!

Hoping I can get this one out for Christmas - stay tuned...

Pip.

I don't know for certain (only have Butt Naked to hand), but I imagine it's quite likely it was different, since with Naked City there was usually a presenter link into each song done as a single shot.

FWIW I have Butt Naked recorded off air (I think it was S-VHS rather than VHS, but I'd need to check the tape to be sure); if you want me to upload a short sample for comparison with yours then let me know. Not saying that mine is better, but it's worth a double check.

I also have the Astoria / The Beat recorded off air, but that one's definitely VHS and I've had problems trying to transfer it in the past.  So I'm not much in a position to help with that one.

Cheers drykid - if yours is an S-VHS source than I would say the picture is probably better than the copy I have (at least 2nd gen VHS). If you could upload say a 30 second clip in MPEG-2 format or something not too compressed that would be very useful smile.gif

Well, what I have is in xvid / .avi format.  I'll upload a short sample tonight in that format so you can judge quality.  But if it turns out to be better than what you have then I could probably re-encode the whole thing to MPEG2 without any noticeable loss of quality later.

Oh yeah, and wouldn't it be logical to include Babies from TOTP?  I think it was from around the same time (unless you're trying to avoid mimed stuff that is.) I have a an off-air recording of that you could use too. Babies was also done on TFI Friday too, but I don't have a copy of that.  I'm sure someone would though.

Naked City was a different performance from Butt Naked, yes. Evidently filmed on the same day though.

I think I have both of the above somewhere in decent quality, and The Word, plus Astoria straight from the telly. Let me know if you need any of them.

drykid - if your original source is xvid/avi then I doubt it will be better than the VHS recording I have here (given the compression) but I'll have a look at a sample anyway, cheers.

As for the TOTP suggestion, it did occur to me but I'm planning to compile a Pulp TOTP DVD early next year featuring all their appearances on the show. I haven't got a title, but Top Of The Pulps might be too cheesy. smile.gif I want to do a similar release for the various TFI Friday appearances too.

Sturdy - Thanks for the clarification! I'd certainly be interested in your copies of all of those, if you fancy loaning them to me for a short period PM me - as a thank you I'll send you the finished product on return of the videos.

I won't get into a long boring discussion about codecs here, but its not true that xvid is more compressed than MPEG2.  WIth both formats you set a resolution and bitrate of your own choice during the encode process, and as long as both are set high enough then there's no reason why both shouldn't look as good as the source you feed into them.  Similarly both formats can look absolutely terrible if you use inadequate settings. Suffice to say when I'm transferring from tape I make sure that the settings are right for the job by comparing the compressed output file with the uncompressed input.

Anyway like I say I'll upload a sample tonight.

Got to be 'I Hate Wet Wet Wet', surely!

Arrgh, that means I'm going to have to actually find them now!

OK a couple of samples from Butt Naked:

http://www.sendspace.com/file/snr9wl

http://www.sendspace.com/file/r4o04n

The first one is a bit from Pulp themselves; the second is just the opening credits.  I uploaded that one to show that compression isn't an issue; if it was then that's where you'd see it since it's a particularly nasty sequence for any encoder to deal with.

Just had a look and you're right, it's pretty clear - and more importantly, no dropouts. How big is your AVI file then drykid?

Part 1 is 338 MB and Part 2 is 290 MB (I split it at the ad break.)

BTW meant to mention it before, but your sleeve artwork is pretty impressive :)

Cool - any chance of sending it over the net at some point?

Cheers, it needs a bit of a tweak here though, not to mention a back cover smile.gif

Sounds great - don´t mean to be cheeky but if you´re doing a lot of the HnH era, is there anything else that could be put on like the performances from Glasto/Reading/Mercury Prize/MTV´s Most Wanted - all from ´94?

Also, I don´t know if anyone´s seen it, but Will of our parish, has recently uploaded a couple of brilliant bits of Pulp footage on youtube. It´s from The Warehouse on ITV in 1993 I think, performances of Babies, Sheffield:Sex City (abridged: natch) and a quick interview with Russell and Jarvis. Anything that Will has put on youtube of Pulp has always been really rare, entertaining stuff - most of which I´d never seen before.

As there's a video of the whole of Reading '94 doing the rounds (unfortunately I don't have it, although I've seen it), maybe there would be some mileage in doing a 1994 festivals compilation, with that, Glastonbury and the one song from T in the Park?

I agree the other bits and scraps from 1994 would be a nice addition to this one if they can be found though - I'd particularly love to see the Princes Trust version of Babies again.

In other news the Butt Naked footage that's been uploaded is probably better than mine. I will try and dig out the other stuff though.

Oh and that Warehouse footage is fantastic! I had no idea Sheffield Sex City and the interview even existed.

Eammon - I'm planning to put *everything* onto DVD eventually smile.gif I'm in this for the long haul. But every disc will probably be between 60-90 minutes long because I don't want to compromise picture quality. I could make it a two disc set perhaps...

SarahAWilson sent me some of the Warehouse footage a few weeks ago (including Sheffield Sex City), was amazed to see it.

Oh, and what's the Introducing Morrissey release?

Apologies everyone for my absence over the last few weeks - Christmas, New Year, trip to Scotland and Internet connection problems have all kept me busy!

Hoping to get started on this one next week. :)

And after three and a half months we have forgotten about it. The work was over, as I understand it?
