Documentary - 9pm BBC4 Friday March 13th Do it yourself, the story of Rough Trade Records
It's a great story: of the record store that became a catalyst for creativity; of boom to bust and back again; and of independence versus mainstream. The label that put principles before profit, gave exposure to everyone from Scritti Politti to The Smiths, and despite the poor business decisions that tore it apart in 1991, Rough Trade and founder Geoff Travis fought back with tenacity.
The skirting over many big names in the Rough Trade rosta may annoy the cognocenti, but some of pop's most engaging minds - Bernard Butler, Green Garthside, Jarvis Cocker - propel this agreeable, archive-packed film with scathing observation and pert articulacy.
