Of the ''more serious'' songs, ''Hold Still'' is intriguing me most probably cos it's the only real song with anything approaching oblique lyrics. Given the news of Jarvis' marriage break-up I'm starting to hear new (probably wrong) things in lines such as ''Like a single parent at the fair'' and ''You're cosmic dust but you're everything to me''.

Hold Still is emerging as my favourite song on the record. Still not sure what it's about, but it sounds really good to these ears.

I've started skipping over Fuckingsong. It sounds too much like every shitty American "rock" band from the past 10 years. Like a terrible Creed or Chris Daughtry song with naughtier lyrics. Next please.

Excellent review over here:

http://obscuresound.com/?p=2916

Conclusion:
"The problem with nearly half of Further Complications is that Cockers delivery seems too forced as he relies on forcedly volatile distortion and repetition more than memorable melodies and interweaving song structures, which is in stark contrast to his previous material. Further Complications stands out decently enough on its own, but for Cocker it is a disappointment considering the past quality of his releases."

i'm not really sure how I Never Said I Was Deep is supposed to be the best thing that Cocker has ever written and somehow Further Complications/Angela/Homewrecker/Pilchard are 'lazy'.  oh wait, separation musically and lyrically of chorus and verse.  (who cares about that?)

and everyone thinks Death of a Ladies' Man is one of Cohen's best records.  it just didn't sell well, so Cohen publically blamed Spector.

I find The Wurzuls particularly endearing after a few drinks!

I was compiling a playlist the other night as I am doing a DJ gig soon and wanted to play something off the album other than Angela. I am finding it really difficult!

I used to play Fat Children & Black Magic a lot but I wanna move with the times kids!

Have ordered the album on vinyl, looking forward to actually having it in a physical format.
Still really enjoying the whole record.
weed, I'd try the title track & I Never Said I Was Deep. Or any of the others ;)

Ha! That's narrowed it down then! I'm gonna try out discosong to open with. However, I'll probably chnage my mind another half dozen times!

I'd put DiscoSong towards the end of the set though you'd have to fade it out at between 6-7 minutes as the outro is quite long. Further Complications or Angela would go down pretty well I think. Short, sharp and to the non-Jarvis fans, a lot of them will still recognise the voice.

Hmm, bit early for a paper to be reviewing it, but Further Complications is The Irish Times 'Album of the Week':

BRIAN BOYDJARVIS COCKER
Further Complications Rough Trade ****

On paper, a collaboration between the noise guitar rock producer Steve Albini and the delicate and informed wordsmith Jarvis Cocker seems unlikely. But on this, Cockers second solo album, the result is a giddy mix of controlled chaos and trenchantly acerbic commentary on all manner of contemporary issues.

That first solo album saw Cocker toss off the restricting mantle of Britpop icon and claw back some eccentricity and experimentation. Hes on similar terrain here, but with a bit more of a sonic va-va-voom.

The title track has a fuzzy, rollicking riff over which the singer screams Your life is just a carrier bag among other bon mots. This particular sound ironic indie pop meeting sinewy grunge trash provides the musical backdrop for most of what is on show here. A more garage rock style sound emerges on Angela , and the rhythm of the music means a change in the lyrics some of Cockers meanderings of old are replaced here with smarter and shorter aphorisms.

The album highlight is I Never Said I Was Deep , with its weird jazz-light backing. I never said I was deep, my lack of knowledge is vast, my horizons are narrow, if youre waiting to find whats going on in my mind, youll be waiting forever he croons. The musical set-up of the song suggests that Albini was only too willing to bend his usual studio trickery and play to Cockers strengths.

The big rock guitar backing (sometimes with an added horn section) continues on the instrumental Pilchard and the beefy Housewrecker . Cockers voice is brought a bit more to the fore on the skewed piano ballad that is Hold Still and the mildy disturbing disco-lite of Youre In My Eyes .

Theres a rawness and urgency about these songs. Cocker seems to be in unsettled mood as he takes swipes at all around him. But the atypical musical approach finds him focused in his anger and sarcasm. Theres nothing left of Pulp anymore he seems, if anything, to be heading into more Elvis Costello territory: switching around musical genres as he sees fit.

On this evidence, Jarvis Cocker has uncovered a rich, new seam and hes not afraid to turn it up to 11 when the situation demands. www.my space.com/jarvspace

So, today's the day. Did anyone rush down to their local record shop, sorry - they don't exist anymore, their local HMV/Tescos, and get the album today, then? I ordered mine online so won't have it for a couple of more days.

There's some photos of Jarvis on the gigwise site, working behind the counter at HMV in Oxford Street this morning. I think he did the same in Brighton this afternoon.
Interesting th.e effort that Rough Trade have put in with promoting this album (new website, in-store gig, signing albums etc) compared to his first one.

Oh, and I'm presuming at this stage that the 9 track version of the album which many sites were advertising over the last few weeks, actually doesn't exist..can someone confirm that the UK edition features 11 songs?

allmusic.com gives Further Complications 4.5 out of 5 stars and has it as an album pick.

I THINK I can confirm 11 songs, but I only bought the vinyl & wasn't there supposed to be a discrepancy or something?

I can definitely confirm 11 fro the vinyl tho', & the fact that the record has astoundingly good gatefold high quality presentation & sounds ace on my landlord's record deck!!

Discosong is on a separate, one-sided (yes, I know, where the fu*k's Girls Like It Too?!) 12 inch single on the other side of the gatefold.
Which is a particularly nice touch, especially as it's so different musically to the rest of the LP.

Another nice touch is the spine reading "the second Jarvis Cocker record", & the full length shiny photo picture all along the inside of the gatefold.
Oh, & the fully-printed inner sleeves for both discs.

So, the only two gripes are the lack of a certain song (guess), & the fact that nowhere does it say Please Do Not Read The Lyrics Whilst Listening To The Recordings..........!

Really, really good. If you've got a deck, buy it! ;)

Cor...I'm thousands of miles from the record-player at home but I'm very tempted to get the vinyl now... so Discosong gets its' own record, just like Running The World last time (though that was a 7'' I think?).

sometimes it's quite difficult to hear what he sings.. maybe thats why? Anyway it's a bit sad if he don't use it anymore..it's more fun when you're not have the permission.

I have all 11 tracks on mine which was delivered by HMV today.

As said before, nice glossy booklet with lyrics and pictures of Jarvis in awkward positions. The edge of the case says 'the second Jarvis Cocker record' :).

I hope everyones going to buy it who got it as a free download :)!

I'm keeping my fingers crossed for a good NME review as I feel that is always the most important review for shaping people's perceptions. Manchester Metro gave it 3/5 and a pretty positive mention. I've seen quite a variety of different reviews; negative and positive which I think is about fair.

Well, I did what I promised myself I'd do; I bought it yesterday, having listened to none of it beforehand, not even the free mp3 of Angela I got sent.

I'm not massively impressed with it so far, to be honest, but first impressions can be misleading, so I'll live with it for rather more than two days before I say anything else. I didn't like His 'n' Hers much when I first got it. (Yes, really.)

I think it's a grower. I didn't hear it until yesterday either. The first time I put it on, nothing really jumped out and grabbed me, but I've been pretty much listening to it all day, on and off, and am now liking what I hear a lot. Without wishing to give too much away on a personal level, or sound a bit pretentious, a lot of what Jarvis is singing about on this album I can relate to well right now, so maybe that helps my appreciation of it. Particularly like Leftovers right now.
Does anyone else think of the Batman theme tune, when Homewrecker comes on?

Re Din-a-din-a-din-a-din-a Batman, yes, ever since I heard it. But in a good way. Homewrecker! has grown on me more than probably any of the heavier songs ( though I loved Further Compliations from the first play).

I've ordered a vinyl copy at my local record store yesterday, since I own everything Jarvis has released solo (and Relaxed Muscle) on vinyl. Got to wait a day or 10, but than I got the original copy. I'm not listening to the download that often, but I liked all the songs except Discosong. Luckily that one will be on a different 12''.

Ha ha, I wasn't a fan of TIH when I first heard it & now it's one of my all-time favourite albums!

Funnily enough, I liked pretty much all of Further Complications on first listening, & I've already listened to it a further three times since having the vinyl.

Really enjoying it, & after the GLIT/Angela fiasco (slight overstatement, I know!) I didn't want to like it!

yeah, it is the Batman theme.

I have only heard it once via the Guardian stream, and i err err don't like it.   My expectations weren't high and I'm used to being disappointed when singers go solo.  The first album had three good songs (From A to I, Fat Kids and Cunts), but I don't think this has any.   I had only heard Angela (amazingly it's going to be out as a single 15th June according to hmv.com) and didn't like that much before the album came out.

Maybe it will grow on me.

I had heard most of the new material previously either live or via dodgy downloads but I bought the CD today from my local independent record shop, Action Records (Have faith in us Eamonn, we are not total freeloaders!).

I've listened to it in full a couple of times, and whilst every song is not a classic, overall my feelings are positive. The title track, Leftovers, INSIWD, Hold Still and Slush are firm favourites for me.

My only regret is that if Jarvis had replaced Angela and Pilchard with GLIT and another track then the album would have been very strong indeed. Still, he makes all the songs come to life when he performs them live and I can't wait to see him next month.

Did anyone hear him mention on the radio the other night how he now goes to a gym in Paris once a week? Jarvis in the gym, someone has got to get that on camera!
