I was looking on acrylicafternoons.com at the list of early pulp TV appearances, and I was just wondering if anyone here had any of these on video or anything?
The best one to see would be the 1991 "Stage One" show on ITV, where they played various songs from Separations (and Live On!) or some of the performances from "The Beat" in 1993.
Yes, both of these are around - although every copy of Stage One I've seen has been in pretty bad quality. One of these days I'll get a capture card and put some of this stuff on YouTube.
The real holy grail would be the New Sessions programme from 1991. It's the earliest Pulp TV appearance (filmed at the Leadmill in March '91) and would be great to see - not least because there are a few songs (like My Legendary Girlfriend) that don't exist in live video form elsewhere. However, I've never had so much of a sniff of a copy of it.

Yeah, the New Sessions one would be amazing... was it on ITV? Would they still have it in their archives?
Also, how do you think I'd go about getting hold of the Stage One 1991 TV show, the one which still exists? If I could get hold of a copy then I have a VHS to DVD recorder so could transfer it to DVD and put it up on Youtube or a file hosting website. Would love to see a full live version of Death II!
ITV do have it in their archives - I rang them up once and asked! They wanted rather a lot of money for a copy though...
I'm sure someone around here could sort you out with a copy of Stage One if you asked in a sufficently plaintive way - I have a copy myself, but unfortunately I don't have the facility to copy videos, and to be honest the quality is so bad (it's a tape of a tape of a tape of a...) it's barely worth watching anyway!

About £150 I think, and it was probably about six years ago. Granada Sales if memory serves. I have a vague memory of ringing Central too - think that must have been about the Class of '91 programme.

Pulp played at the record breaking non-stop cabaret referred to above, you see - indeed, I think it was organised by Peter Boam. Then again, there wre 165 acts playing, so there's a good chance of them not getting a mention! Anyone going to order it and find out then?

Well, I signed up to that ITN website pretending to be from a new media company, but it's making me go through about eight pages of order confirmation questions before telling me how much it would cost to get a DVD of any of those clips... Ah, it's now threatening me with a courtesy call from their sales team. I don't really want some ITN telesales gimp pestering me for the rest of time to pay £200 for a thirty-second report featuring some shaky footage of some band #113 on the list who happened to be playing behind the reporter.
Bother.
The site does offer you the choice of high-quality broadcast-quality footage or a low-resolution "screener", and offers all its clips on DVD now. Sadly, even if we did all want to chip in for the New Sessions thing, I doubt they would accept "to put it on Youtube" as a valid reason for purchase...
You have to give a valid reason? Isn't "Cos I'm interested in watching this" sufficient enough?
As a matter of interest, do the Beeb have a similar archive? There's probably quite a few Pulp clips/material certainly from the BBC Radio archives, that are tricky to find.
They appear to have a copy of that New Sessions programme. Not that it is a lot of use, because it is not possible to borrow stuff from the British library, but only to listen to/view recordings in the library, and that involves going through considerable bureaucracy.
I was thinking that Fire Records ought to release a deluxe edition of Separations with the News Sessions and Stage One footage on a bonus DVD. Not at all likely, I suppose.
Mark - thanks for digging up that info about the non-stop cabaret appearance. It's a shame there isn't a straightforward way to view that news footage to see whether they appear.
"Dear Calum Lynn Thanks for your enquiry and apologies for the delay in replying. It would be possible to produce a one-off DVD copy of each of these programmes for private & personal use. The prices are £99.00 for the 'New Sessions' programme and £198.00 for 'The Warehouse' episode. If you'd like to go ahead please mail me your full postal address and I'll then send you a Licence Agreement form to sign. Regards Robin Bray Programme Copy Sales ITV plc"
I'd love to know how they calculate the cost. I bet the original production team of the broadcast would be quite impressed, or rather a bit startled by having their copyright infringed all these years later.
Like Will, I'd be more than willing to put something to the kitty. It might mean we'll all have to have a big ''Bar Italia Night" round someone's house some night, eating boxes of Milk Tray and drawing the draylon curtains in case anyone outside could sneak a peek. And at the end, go our seperate ways promising never to even discuss what we had just seen. But damn those License Agreement Forms are still worth it.
I should probably point out that the 'Licence Argreement' mentioned above in the email to Calumn will almost certainly include a clause that says he's not allowed to pass out copies to, say, people off internet messageboards who've chipped in part of the cost. That would be naughty.
(Having said that, put me down for a copy too...)

Well if everyone did chip in then I could copy it onto DVDs for everyone who had put some money in and send it to them in the post, that would be no problem at all. Because it will be watermarked and very obvious that it was me if someone put it on the internet, and I'd have Granada "on my ass", but we could just mail it to each other, and anyone else who wanted a copy could send me a stamp and a blank DVD or whatever.
Yeah, providing Granada don't see this thread and (a) decide against selling you a copy and (b) get the forum shut down!
I would point out again that, much as it's a lovely idea, what you're suggesting doing is also seriously fucking illegal, so if you're going to go ahead with it you should probably take it to private email sharpish.
