Did anyone see the documentry on BBC2 this week? I hadn't realised his illness had left him in such a bad way. I saw him supporting Pulp back in '96 and although I couldn't say I was a fan he was quite entertaining. Regardless of whether or not you like his music, his courage is an inspiration to all of us.

I was shocked to hear about this- didn't have a clue he'd suffered that illness. I saw him when he supported Pulp too- a really funny, talented guy. Thanks for posting the link I really enjoyed it. The man is so impressive. It would've been easy to just jack it in but he hasn't and that is the way it should be.

He's generally pretty fucking excellent, though I think I prefer Orange Juice to his solo records. Best of luck to him.

Watched the documentary the other night - moving, inspirational stuff. Thanks for posting the link Weed.

I'm a fairly big fan of both OJ and his solo stuff, especially the early Postcard material which is just wonderful. I'll have to dig it out and check, but I suspect that Gorgeous George is one of the more durable albums from the Britpop era.

Thanks for changing the spelling! I had realised what I had done after posting but hoped no-one would pick up on it!

Webbo fan - I think Orange Juice split up around 1988 so it's unlikely. Edwyn Collins supported Pulp on their UK arena tour in 1996 along with a rather uncool band called 'Demin'

I always felt (ha!) sorry for Denim, in that Lawrence had also been plugging away for years with zero success before suddenly hitting a rich vein of excellent literate disco pop form - but Pulp were already doing it better, which meant nobody cared.  Their first two albums are not a million miles away from what Pulp were doing at the same time, and well worth a listen, though not by any stretch of the imagination are they as good.  But then I'm not sure anything is.  Their third "album" is completely nuts, but look past that to the stuff that would have made up the fourth album - in a different universe, where Different Class sold nine copies and consequently This Is Hardcore was conceived as a low-budget fey indie-pop record, it might have come out very much like that.

yeah, Back In Denim is one of my favourite albums of the 90s.  and Felt was one of my favourites of the 80s. in fact, i just heard lawrence was very ill and that DSS was cutting him off.  that guy never gets a break.

Vic Goddard from the Subway Sect was saying something about it at a recent show.  he then said that Lawrence had "disappeared" again and is a "real man of mystery".  Lawrence's money problems are pretty well known, so if DSS is cutting him off, it's trouble.  Mentally.  Should make for an interesting Go Kart Mozart LP in five years.

Orange Juice split in '86 so that's an almost certain no, and it would have been Pulp supporting Orange Juice not the other way round!

Edywn Collins is amazing, I saw him in Newcastle the other month and it's just amazing what progress he has made.
