Just thought this might interest you....as I was looking through some old records and stuff I found a Pulp demo from around the time We Love Life was recorded...I hadn't heard it for years....just wondered if you know all these songs.
1) Birds in your Garden 2) Bad cover version 3) Forever in my dreams 4) Darren 5) Bob Lind 6) My Mistake 7) The night that mini Temperley died 8) Sunrise 9) After You 10) Wickerman 11) Your Grandfathers Nursery 12) Yesterday 13) The Cuckoo Song 14) The Last song in the world 15) Performance of a life time 16) Gotta have Love 17) Gotta have Love (inst)
I would be very interested in listening to these demo versions... do you think that you could upload them on Bar Italia, that would be very nice of you? Nicolas.
that's a real gem. we've been dying on this board to hear the studio demo of 'Cuckoo' and the lyrics to 'Got to Have Love' for a few years now. 'My Mistake' and 'Last Song', i know nothing about. i don't think they were mentioned in sturdy's book (of course i may be wrong...) i'd be fascinated to hear these.
So, Manners, is 'After You' as good as Geoff Travis and Nick Banks claim?
And are 'My Mistake' and 'Last Song In The World' instrumentals? No mention of them with lyrics in the Demo page on the official site (which was spot on with the details of HnH and DC recordings which appeared on the reissues last year).
We await a We Love Life deluxe edition with increasing interest...
Wasnt Sunrise during demo period recordings called Burgers and Coolers, also Minnie was Jungle Rumble, The Cuckoo Song being Cuckoo, and Gotta Have Love being GOT TO HAVE LOVE.....
For what it's worth, you've succeeded between yourselves in making Manners somewhat disinclined to post here again, never mind start passing out copies of unreleased studio material to anyone who asks.
Consider this for a minute. You're an ex-member/close associate of a famous band, and as a result you get given a copy of the work-in-progress demos for their new album. Obviously you don't go around copying this for people or putting it on the internet or anything because it goes without saying that this would be a massive breach of trust.
Years later you find the CD and post the tracklisting on here in case anyone's interested. Clearly it's STILL not your music to give away, so the thought of copying/uploading it for anyone, let alone random internet people you've never met, doesn't cross your mind.
That's before you get half a dozen responses variously demanding that you put the tracks online, accusing you of being an imposter and/or making the whole thing up, and saying you've got the song titles wrong.
That's clearly going to change your mind isn't it?
Well done everyone.

"Jungle Rumble became Minnie Timperley" - From 1999 Depot ...... im clearly lying though as I got that from Bar Italia. Burgers and Coolers - Was Cuckoo Rave Sense - Sunrise Quiet Revolution - Donovan - these three were taken from the Flux booteg, to which I assume they got their working titles from the setlist off the stage.
Now lets just look at the dubiousness of that post - I actually emailed you to which you clearly could not be arsed replying to.
1 - I apologise way way way in advance if this new Manners ID is indeed him, some people are doubtful for their own reasons, but I myself find it more than odd how the original Manners ID was deleted, and then the new one comes into existance, and the immediate post was .........ooooo look at what I have found !!! Now if it was Manners himself, than many apologies. If its not , and its someone pranking around, they have wound a few folk up.
2 - Its such a complete mish mash of tracks, which also made me very dubious - ive never heard of an artist which would compile a mixture of various demo sessions, and produce a cd with them on - surely they would rerecord unless they were finished tracks. Certain tracks which are on there were binned for not being complete, OR that they were not with the sound of the album they were after.
3 - Where is the response from Manners - it doesnt take alot to say " sorry I cant copy " or whatever. It seemed to me as if it was a thread to entice and tease people and the reaction was ALWAYS going to happen, especially regarding the rarity situation, and people wanting them.
4 - The titles thing you mention, I have clearly proven that eg - Minnie Timperley which is on the list, was Jungle Rumble - how do i know this? Cor Blimey guv......its on the OFFICIAL PULP SITE !!!! So if this was genuine, it would have been called Jungle Rumble....so are you calling me a liar mark eh?
5 - Personally, I never said that "oi, you have got the names of the songs wrong", you totally took it out of context, I deliberately left the message like that so someone could say, sorry scotty your mistaken.....they were / hey your right, they were called...........dgdasgadg, afagag etc.
6 - Has Manners actually gotten in touch with you to express his dissapointment and that he is never going to post on here again? Or are you just assuming. I find your response and reactions totally wrong mark. The majority of people on here have lined your pockets and bought your huge pulp book. We have all read it, and enjoyed it. Someone posts on here saying " ive got this demo cd whatever blah blah" and so people are going to ask for it. And then boom, you hit us all with this response to my comment. Not long ago you even had the nerve to try and insult me on this forum, about an issue which was long long ago. To which you then told me " oh im joking". So I have a feeling that his whole reply of yours is a big dig at me for some reason. I find that you have insulted alot of us - we have paid for your book, and want rarities. You have got LOTS of rarities that you havent revealed on here ( I know....i was at your book launch party, I PAID to get there to meet you, I also know because you made the bleedin CDs and played them on the Stereo).
Thats the only reply you have? You cant even be bothered to respond to the email I sent you, you cant be bothered to reply to the things I proved you wrong on? So I have wasted my time trying to explain why people have acted the way they have, and then prove you wrong about song titles being wrong ?
Sorry Mick, what I said wasn't in any way directed at you said, which was completely inoffensive as far as I can see. I was referring to some of the silliness that's gone on elsewhere on this thread.

Alright then Scotty, if you're that desperate for a response. For the record, it's not true that I ignored your email because I couldn't be bothered replying to it. It was actually a conscious decision because I didn't really want to get into a conversation with you. However, as you've taken to attacking me on a public forum, you don't leave me with much option...
Firstly the song titles thing. Yes, Sunrise and Cuckoo apparently had the working titles Rave Sense and Burgers & Coolers when they were first played live. By the time they were demoed, they were called Sunrise and (The) Cuckoo (Song).
1 - Yes, I'm certain that the message was posted by Peter Mansell as I've been in contact privately with him about it. Why he deleted his previous account and then created a new one I don't know, but it's actually the second time he's done it.
2 - Why wouldn't it be a mishmash of tracks? It's obviously something that's been put together for the band's own reference, presumably at some point during 2000 in order to review the songs they had at that point in the project. My best guess is that it was done immediately before the start of the main album sessions to help whittle down the main contenders for album tracks. That's feasible surely?
3 - There probably would've been a response from Manners to some of the questions on here if some of the more snotty remarks from people had made him decide not to bother!
4 - Fair enough, the Depot demo of Minnie was indeed titled Jungle Rumble according to the Pulp People site. However, if you really want to get into it, it doesn't necessarily follow that the version on this CD was that version. For all we know, it could be the final album version, a live version, or some unknown interim studio recording.
5 - Whatever...
6 - "Has Manners actually gotten in touch with you to express his dissapointment and that he is never going to post on here again?" - Yes, he has.
"I find that you have insulted alot of us - we have paid for your book, and want rarities" - That's interesting, I kind of assumed that people paid for my book because they wanted a book. As for lining my pockets, I'm not quite sure how rich you think it's possible for me to get from a 7.5% royalty on 3000 books!
"You have got LOTS of rarities that you havent revealed on here" - Oh Jesus, here we go again. Yes, I obviously have a couple of things that I got hold of during the course of researching the book - although not nearly as much as you probably think. Regardless, it's stuff that was given to me on the assumption that I would behave responsibly with it and not go round copying it for people, uploading it on the internet, flogging it on Ebay etc. That's not because I want to spent the rest of my days wanking over it in a cave like Gollum, but because - one again - it is NOT MY MUSIC TO GIVE AWAY. Can you not see that at all? The stuff I do feel it'd be OK for me to copy for people, I have - in fact, without going into specifics, you'd probably be surprisd by the amount of Pulp in circulation that is available thanks to me. By the same argument, clearly it would be completely inappropriate for me to start going on about the stuff I can't copy for people on this forum.
"i was at your book launch party, I PAID to get there to meet you" - I invited you (and lots of other people) because I thought you might want to come. Sorry if you felt put out by that in some way. If it'll make you feel any better, I'll refund your petrol money.

i just wrote that i'd be fascinated to hear those songs. didn't think that would scare anyone away, it seemed like the natural thing at the time.
as an aside, this really is a particularly finicky forum. sometimes it manages to make people feel idiotic about things that really aren't terribly impactful overall. i've been coming here for years and i still don't feel i have a good grip on the kinds of discussions and requests that the veterans of this board are after.
as well, manners should sort of expect that the frequenters of this board are going to ask to hear the music he's mentioning. that was pure red meat for a pulp fan and his post didn't really much of a window for other chutes of discussion to develop (it was a private message specific to sturdy.)
Precisely my point Frisko, people are going to ask, if they see something that they really want.
Sturdy, I couldnt really care less that you have more things than others, I am truely not arsed about that in the slightest - my problem lies with your attitude.
You didnt want to reply to my email - so that was ignorance.
You were snide in your comments "Well done everyone.", "For what it's worth, you've succeeded between yourselves in making Manners somewhat disinclined to post here again"
I took the time out to discuss and ask questions as to why you reacted the way you did and all we got back (at first) was....."I think that just about speaks for itself." Of course someone is going to be pissed off when someone cant be arsed to reply to an email, or a message on here.
And as to offering the petrol money, now your seriously taking the piss - I had you down as a decent person once, but these last few posts have really fucked me off. You also claim that I "Attacked you" on a public forum, how was this so? I asked questions for why you sent such a message on here, and you simply couldnt be arsed replying...... and then because I pulled you up on it, you reply again in an ignorant and arrogent manor. Whos attacking who now?
I simply was in defence of those who asked for the tracks , as if you dont ask - you dont get.....but then in comes sturdy with his size 12's with an ego the size of Blackpool Tower. It was uncalled for mark.
Now I apologise to anyone who has had to read this rant between me and sturdy, I feel its more a dig at me than anyone else - but at the end of the day, its an open forum, no one is gonna stop asking for things if they see that they want something mark.
How fucking tempted am I to leave this forum now, for YEARS I have used this forum, and now, its boiled down to this because someone else (not me......) asked for tracks. Justice eh?
I'd be happier if you were to spell personal names with a capital initial letter, but that's just because I'm a pedant. To be fair, phrases like "Happy now?" and "Well done everyone" are unhelpful at the best of times, but I think everyone's agreed - I can speak for everyone, right? - that personal disagreements ought to be left to private mail.
It's funny to see people get emotional here, because it's much more civil and respectful than any other message board I've frequented.
I totally agree about the personal comments thing, but he wont even bother to reply to the email I sent him, so I cant express any kind of message to him appart from this message board
