Details were recently added on PulpWiki about a cover version of Razzmatazz by The Auteurs. I believe it was done for French radio programme Le Top Live in 1994. Pulp did cover versions of Morning Dew (Bonnie Dobson/Tim Rose) and Femme Fatale (Velvet Underground) on the same show around that time. I was just wondering whether anybody has heard it or even better has a recording of it that they could share. I'm a bit of a fan of The Auteurs, so I would be interested to hear this curio.
On a more general note, if anybody knows of any cover versions of Pulp songs not listed on the cover versions page then let me know (or add them to the wiki yourself).
I noticed this recently, on Pulpwiki that The Auteurs had covered this, and asked Alphi (who posted the details on the performance) where I could track it down - I'm also a big fan of The Auteurs, moreso their early period.
Anyway Alphi kindly sent me on the track, albeit in flac format. Being a novice at converting sound formats I could only manage to play the file after downloading winamp (it wouldn't play in Windows Media Player). Alphi told me I could convert the file to wav or mp3 through using a program called Flac Frontend but before I had time to do this, that particular laptop died and is currently being repaired.
I will try and do the necessary file converting once the machine has been repaired next week. Alternatively you could drop Alphi a line and I'm sure he'll send it on. Maybe you're more adept at operating flac files Will.
As for the version itself, it's really just Luke Haines with his guitar (don't recall there being a backing band) and it's a quite spirited if truncated version (leaves out the bridge "I saw you at the doctors waiting for a test..."etc.), just under 3 minutes. Nice curio though. The ever- effervescent Bernard Lenoir can be heard at the end lauding the performance. The whole set of this gig would be great to hear (much of the brilliant 'Now Im A Cowboy' being promoted) but the only other song Alphi has from the broadcast is 'Chinese Bakery'.
Here is the whole story about the session. Some months ago I've been making a trade with a Divine Comedy fan who sent me some old tapes of radio programs featuring early Divine Comedy material. But also his tapes featured some Auteurs stuffs: a live in Sheffield in 1993 that I didn't copied because it seems to already exist on CD-R in the trading circle. And, 2 French radio session that don't seems to be available anywhere else.
The first one is a session from 1993, I think. It features 4 songs: 1. She May Take Her Train 2. They Can't Find Him 3. Housebreaker 4. Valet Parking
The second session was a 2 songs session. The first one is a version of Chinese Bakery with Luke singing over the album version. The 2nd one is the cover of Razzmatazz. According to the voice of the DJ (who is NOT Bernard Lenoir) I guess this is a session for Le Top live, Europe 1. Probably some talking parts didn't get taped. Both sessions can be downloaded from the baritalia2006 account. You'll find sendspace links in a mail. PLEASE, DO NOT DISTRIBUTE THEM AS MP3. THE BEST I CAN RECOMMAND IS TO KEEP THEM AS FLAC FILES AND NOT CONVERT THEM. YOU CAN EASILY LISTEN TO THEM ON WINAMP.
Eamonn, Will, you both said that you would eventually be alright to trade. I would be very interested if I could get some Pulp/Auteurs bootlegs. Please could you send me your tradelists ? Mine can be viewed here: http://ashortsite.free.fr/trades/ I have mainly Divine Comedy recordings and not very much Pulp/Jarvis that you might not have yet (most of them come from dimeadozen - and my list is not complete actually, I still have a lot of bootlegs to listen to).
I have something else that can be interesting: I found 2 weeks ago a French promo CD of Fat Kids featuring all the B-sides (Fat Kids 'Let Them Eat Acid' Extra Large Mix and Loss Adjuster). I don't think Loss Adjuster is available elsewhere as a digital lossless format. I can upload a FLAC file if you are interested in.
By the way, I saw Jarvis at Richard Hawley's gig in Paris 2 weeks ago. But I didn't dare to talk to him after the show as he was chatting with many people. Photos of the show can be viewed here: http://ashortsite.free.fr/photos/2007.10.25%20richard%20hawley/ Oh, and I also taped the performance..
