My friend and brother are both at the Electric Picnic festival in the Irish midlands this weekend, unfortunately I was stone broke when the tickets came out; anyroad I've been told that Jarvis finished his set with Common People! My friend is an electronica head but he said he'd go along to Jarvis to let me know how the gig was. Unfortunately the tent was rammed and they had to turn people away which begs the question who the hell was on the main stage at the same time?
Wish I could confirm this, can't find any reviews on the net, wish even more I could have gone to it, being only 40 miles away; the only thing that would makes sense for him to play a Pulp song all of a sudden after a solid spread of "Jarvis material only" shows in the 6-9 months since the solo album's release is that this is his final gig promoting the record isn't it? Maybe he wanted to sign-off in style...
Eamonn I've been at the Electric Picnic all weekend and Jarvis did not do Common People. The last song was a cover of The Boys Are Back In Town. I mentioned this on the Rock En Seine thread. It was a brilliant performance. I'll be getting my pictures developed tomorrow so if I can figure out how to use a scanner and upload I'll defo post them here. It may take me awhile! What's this about the tent? I walked in about 15 mins before he was due on and got well up near the front. There were a few blokes who started shouting for him to play 'I Spy' just when I Will Kill Again ended. I'll post more if I get these pictures sorted
Hmm...I thought it might have to be confirmed but thought he'd know 'Common People' when he heard it. Cheers for that Jean; presume you had a great time. My brother's just back and he had a ball.
So was there a good crowd for him then? What was the crowd response like?
Hey Eamonn. It was brilliant and he got a great reception too. I have written a review but I wanted to include my pictures with it but I can't figure out how to post a picture here. Can anyone help? Then I'll put up the review with that. Cheers in advance Got one cool close up of Jarv and of course one of my steve too I have all the banter between songs written in the piece too so if anyone can help with the pictures please do!
Edit: all the dits are me trying to post the good picture! Yay! I've finally done it. I'll try get the review (if I dare call it that) and the pics up soon.
I was also at the Electric Picnic (still recovering actually), and thoroughly enjoyed Jarvis' performance, if not quite as much as the first time I saw him last November. It being a festival, he had quite a short set and the crowd would have gone aboslutely nuts for one of the oldies, had he played 'em. Richard Hawley wasn't there either. Ah well. When he said he was going to play an Irish song I almost panicked that he might let himself down and cover U2, but The Boys Are Back In Town was great. I've also seen Belle & Sebastian cover that song over here; would somebody please notify these rock 'n' roll sorts that the best Irish pop song is either The Undertones' My Perfect Cousin or Sultans Of Ping's Where's Me Jumper (which really would have set the crowd off).
Anyway, the only interesting thing I'd have to add to Jean's report is Jarv's repeated mention that this was going to be their last gig for a while. He wasn't more specific than that, but does this mean that he'll be working on new material/projects in the near future? He seems to have accepted his fate as a musician so I don't expect another retirement just because the album failed to light up the world again. Maybe he just meant he'll be working with different musicians. Maybe he's even on the blower to Havenhand or Manners right now...
Personally speaking, I hope he tries out something audacious, whether more experimental musically or a concerted effort at classic pop again. The biggest criticism of his solo album is that it does sound a bit middle-aged in places: surely everyone wants him to do something bolder and more adventurous?
Ha ha I played Where's Me Jumper in the 3Bs last week - went down very well. & I really thought Jarvis was gonna play it at the Astoria, after he mentioned it. I reckon it's only a matter of time...!
Hope Jarvis doesn't stay away for too long this time. Who knows, maybe he wants to get Pulp back out there? Even if there's no record from them, a tour would be great. A yearly tour like Madness do would be ace (-:

I've probably said this before, but I think a Jarvis or Pulp album that built off of the sound of songs like "My Body May Die" would be amazing.
Hi Will, that's great that it's some 'new' info. I had assumed someone somewhere had probably uploaded it. I'm a bit of a technophobe so I've been sitting on it for the last 4 years until I learned how to cut up files the other night! It was on the Irish radio station 2FM and afaik was broadcast in the September of 2007. All the best, Jean.
