 The Adelphi Club (Hull) 1986

I remember this gig more than any other...Even Mark S dosen't know this story so let me begin.

I walked into the club and saw Steve genn playing a fruit machine, Magnus had just come back from the shop with 8 cans of something or another, Paul the landlord said " You cant drink that here this is my bar, if your gonna drink all that your gonna have to go outside" Magnus called me over and we went outside and had a can and left the other cans by the train track that ran just behind the Adelphi, we smoked a quick pipe of hash and then went back in, to my utter astonishment russell was unloading the van, we helped with the rest of the equipment and began to set it up on stage, Jarvis and russell were having words about us and I put two fingers up at them and asked them if they were gay..Russell stormed off and Jarvis looked at me in a very "what the hell are you doing" kind of way. I got behind the bar and pulled loads of beer into a bucket (pumps in those days) and began drinking it with Steve Genn.

We were due to sound check at anytime but we went back to the train lines and had more beer and hash, I had a big box of fireworks and we let them off and we chucked them at each other..Magnus really burnt his hand. The next thing I remember is Jarvis screaming at us to come and do a soundcheck, we refused and Steve Genn played the Bass and Jarvis played the drums himself, by this time We were totally out of it and just laid by the train track sinning old Mcdonald. When we eventullay got on stage we played a blinding gig but it turnrd dark again after, Steve Genn had aquired 2 bottle of rum and we drank the lot, no wonder thay couldn't wait to get Steve havenhand in. We didn't travel home in the bus either we waked to the beach (withernsea) and then hitched back to Sheffield the next day...we had another gig at the limit in 3 days.....So I guess thats why jarvis wrote dogs are everywhere....because we were dogs...but dogs having fun....and shit on everything he believed in..

Ace story, thanks for that Pete. I indeed hadn't heard that story (although Kirk has another good one from a Hull gig about Jarvis fallling in the sea).

Do you know if that was the gig where Blyth Power supported?

Hello Mark!!

I can't remember who supported us but what I can tell you is that if the band ever played anywhere near water someone would end up wet...Best one was Simon Hinkler..near Bristol

Just another thought... why do you think Jarvis and Russell used to have such a problem with you and Mag getting wasted? Nipping round the back of the venue for a can of Double Diamond and a smoke before you go on doesn't sound like outrageous behaviour, it clearly didn't affect the gig if you say that you played a blinder that night, and obviously it's fairly small beans compared to what Jarvis was getting up to a few years later. I can't really see why it apparently pissed them off so much.

Hi Mark

I suppose it was similar to alot of relationships....wonderful to begin with, plod along in the middle and then it gets to a stage where everything just pisses you off, and ofcourse then it ends. I can totally understand Jarvis and Russell being sick to death of us, they put everthing into making the band work, especially Jarvis who turned down the opportunity to head off for university, they knew that we didn't really want to be in Pulp anymore and we knew they didn't want us in the band either....It was kind of who is going to finish this? but as you all know it turned out for the best, I would never have carried on without Mag!! So Mag went to live in Portugal and then India....never saw him sound again...sad stuff..he went all Barrett on me!

I found watching Pulp much more enjoyable and being involved at a distance, still to this day it baffles me how long we managed to stay together...not bad for a group of  people that didn't really like each other...but I'm happy to say It's not like that anymore!!
