Jarvis was on top form, he couldn't stop moving and he was really funny, telling the crowd how he hates toilet roll dispensers that only release one sheet at a time, and how he hates the fact that he can’t open the plastic bags that you put vegetables in at supermarkets. He shared a cigarette with a member of the audience and gave a large bottle of alcohol to a group of fans at the front. At one point a girl threw her bra at him and he told her to get it from lost property at the end. He performed every song from his album apart from quantum theory and baby's coming back to me, he also did big stuff and one man show. The encore started with cunts (obviously) and ended with a cover of shot by both sides, by the Manchester band magazine. Amazing nite.

Yeah, was a great gig, was right at the front so had a fantastic view (had to queue up two hours, mind, but bloody worth it) - I'll post some photos, and maybe even a couple of videos, this evening.

Highlight was drinking Mr Cocker's beer. Nice big bottle it were, n' all.

I'd not had owt to drink all day man, I was parched!

Was the girl on my right who had the beer, I remember she and her boyfriend were totally wankered before Deep Seals even came on... happy days.

When Jarv mentioned things he hated, I was going to shout "People who read lyrics whilst listening to music" but I sadly never got the chance.

Wow, Shot By Both Sides. Wish I'd been there for that one. Possibly the best song he's covered so far?

Okidoke, here's a few snaps:

And my souvenir of the evening:

I videoed Shot By Both Sides on my phone - I was right up front so the sound isn't up to much obviously, but I can upload it to the Bar Italia yahoo account if you like...

There's a disappointing review of the gig at BBC Manchester:

Not a happy bunny.

That's quite scary - Jarvis has a coat very similar to mine!

Now I feel really cool. :-p

Cool pics, shame he looked a bit miserable hehe.

(were you with the group right at the front of the queue?)

ha, you should, it is quite a cool coat!
he did look a bit miserable, but we was actually really nice, and seemed to like the painting I gave him.
yeah, I was, why, did you see us?
we'd been waiting outside the academy for ages, but it was worth it, seeing as we met him, and we were right at the front during the gig.
and that review is awful!
I thought it was a really good gig.

He looked like he was in good form that night, too bad about the sound.

So he's been playing covers of hometown hits... I wonder if he'll keep it up when he travels to North America? Velvet Underground in NYC seems likely. But what ever will he play on the West Coast? Is it possible he might do a Nirvana cover in Seattle? Gasp! I can't see him doing that...

The pickings are slim, aren't they? Moderate weather does not make for good music.

He might as well play a Pixies song in Seattle, since all those Seattle bands were just emulating The Pixies anyway. In San Francisco he could play a Grateful Dead song, or early Metallica... which could be interesting in a not-completely-ironic way.

That would be cool... did anyone else on here see the Stunt Kites gig back in 2003 where he did a really good version of I'm Set Free? He's obviously a big fan.
