Happy December everyone. Here's something new, that also isn't new, but some of it is...

If you want your present you're going to have to unwrap it

Exciting...nice one, Mark!

Another version of Snow! The Pulp Christmas number one in a parallel universe where The Power Of Love by Frankie was vanquished (though for context, it's great that it makes a background appearance on the opening track of this recording!).

Looks like the below needs to be updated to include Snow as the opener. Man, what a riff that song is built on.

Pretty cool eh.

A bit of background in case anyone's interested. This tape was recorded by a guy called Clyde who played in bands locally at the time and recorded quite a few Pulp shows - sadly all his masters are gone. He did however give a copy to his mate Tim (one of the other people who can be heard chatting at the beginning and end), who subsequently gave a copy to *his* mate Paul, which is where the previously circulating incomplete copies of this show came from. Tim still has his tape, and he's kindly lent me it for this transfer.

So we now know that the previous version of this show is incomplete - Snow, Repressive Forkout and Take You Back are all new here, and There's No Emotion is back in its rightful place (it was previously stuck on at the end).

It's a shame the tape goes a bit awry around Repressive Forkout and Take You Back (and the start of Little Girl), which is presumably why those songs weren't included on the other copy. This seems to be from the master - the tape isn't physically damaged, and you can hear the same artefacts on the previous copy of Little Girl.

Anyway, enjoy!

Anyway, good to have second versions of Snow and Repressive Forkout innit? I don't think the lyrics to Snow are much clearer than on the Leadmill tape, but maybe it's possible to make out the odd bit here and there.

It's almost like this show is a practice / warm-up for the bigger one they played at the Leadmill a couple of weeks later - not that that one ran much more smoothly...

Wow, that's great. Thanks for uploading. I always thought that "Snow" and "Repressive Forkout" were played just once (at the Leadmill) then abandoned. "Snow" in particular sounds a little bit different. I will have to attempt a transcription to see how the lyrics compare to the Leadmill version.

Jarvis on Snow in 2018:

I've always wanted to write a Christmas song but never managed it. I loved singing carols at school and always wanted to capture that sort of magic in a song. The closest I got was with Pulp doing a song called Snow in the early 80s, but it was pretty depressing and we never recorded it.

Link includes his top eleven Xmas songs:

Nice find there!

I've had a go at picking out a few more lyrics from the new recording, but it's not really any clearer than the Leadmill one, even after messing around with an AI vocal splitter thing. I've added what I've been able to make out to the Wiki page.

I have just had a go and ended up with essentially the same results

It's frustrating because the two versions do seem to match up for the most part, suggesting that what he's singing is an actual lyric, not just mumbling random syllables as he's been known to do (although there's probably a bit of that here and there). Shame a handwritten sheet didn't emerge for the Good Pop Bad Pop exhibition really.

I use lalal.ai. Its latest algorithms for stripping out vocals or drums are pretty damn impressive when the source material gives it enough to work with.

Great to see that the Clyde link yielded some fruit at last many years later.
My memory is that we were given Clyde as a link some years back as someone who might have some Pulp gigs as "he always had his recorder with him" at all of the many gigs he went to.
Me and Mark eventually tracked the guy down after some time. Yes, it was he and...no...his collection didn't. It had been hot rid of some years before. I try not to think about what it might have included.
But great to see that, as well as what we already knew about, this one made it our, too. Top work Mark, for tracking down this new guy. And top Mark's for sharing it publicly. I've not listened yet, but I'm looking forward to it!
