Ranking every single Pulp song (officially released)

Here's something for a bit of fun. The Beatles Bible forum did something similar.

Linked here: a spreadsheet of every officially released Pulp song. Give every song a ranking between 1 and 12, with 1 being "oh god, the horror" and 12 being "this is the greatest, I absolutely adore this".

Post a link to your own spreadsheet, which you can do using my template (go to File -> Make a copy). At the end of September, I'll post the final ranking, which will be the aggregate of everyone's responses.

This is only the officially released songs, so there are some inclusions that have slithered onto nondescript, obscure compilations (like 'Maureen' and 'Coy Mistress') that are included, but no space for 'Snow', 'Rattlesnake', or - as yet - 'Hymn of the North'. Otherwise, we'd be here all day.

Have 'fun' - if meticulously filling out spreadsheets is your thing!

I'll assume you misunderstood the assignment and invert all of your scores

Interested to see what ends up being the result. I just logged in to say I know it's not on the list but I can't get enough of Hymn of the North. That'd probably now be right in my top 10 Pulp songs. I especially love the bit...would you call it a middle 8 when it goes into 'northern lights will guide you home' and from thereon in. Just beautuful. Keep listening to it over and over on YouTube. Funny the way a specific song can really appeal to one person and not to another. Is anyone else a bit obsessed with it? I am in the mood for the more gentle songs at the moment though. 'It' is getting a lot of plays and 'There Was' etc

It's a wonderful song. Begging for a studio release...

I go around in circles like that. Listen to one song, get addicted to it. It was Lipgloss for a while (hence the username), then Spotify cottoned on and now automatically plays either it or Pink Glove (more often the latter) whenever I'm playing music and the queue is empty.

Lots of Party Hard right now, coinciding with the single release. Joyriders, too.

I will say now that if anyone here does genuinely rate Silence as a 12, I'd love to hear their thoughts. Would be an interesting conversation.

Aw, absolutely. I was just thinking that earlier with the string section and all and the splashy cymbals. It sounds so good live so just imagine a lovely studio version. I'd love if they'd do it. Fingers crossed.

Yeah, I get absolutely obsessed with one song or era at a time too! While that happens where you get obsessed with maybe less well known tunes I expect something like Disco 2000 to come out on top because it's a great shared thing. Everyone, even non Pulp fans like that and it gets entangled with great collective memories. That's my twopence anyway. Right, I better go and do some work!

I hope they release it at the end of the Pulp Island singles series as a single, sort of a nice way to round it all off by finishing the well known singles with a new one. But one can only hope.

Hymn Of The North is a song Ive played every week since the Sheffield gig. I do prefer the more polished London Apollo versions but its nice that its evolution has been documented as its gone on through the concerts.

Agree. There's a particular video from the Apollo that I keep playing over and over. Prefer it the way it evolved from its first outing on the tour.

I'm not saying I think that "Silence" is great but I think fans' opinions have been swayed by Jarvis' hatred of it. If he had said the same about, say, "Manon" then more people would probably hate that. I think that "Silence" has some good lyrics and the spoken bits are alright. That said, the chorus vocals are pretty poor and if they were trying to raid the old demos when putting B-sides on the single, then there were better alternatives (for example, "Take You Back" would have sat perfectly alongside "Manon"). I was prepared for a lot worse when I first heard it and remember thinking, "It's not that bad". All in all, I don't think it's a complete disaster and no worse than "97 Lovers" or "Goodnight".

Whaaat? It's miles worse than those two songs! They're all different shades of dank, granted, but Silence is an absolute cesspit of horror.

I think Silence is so bad that it genuinely worsens other songs from the era too. Listen to Silence's leaden, miserable two chords, over and over, and then Freaks, and the dingy, minor, predictable descending chords of Being Followed Home, Master of the Universe, and They Suffocate At Night become gloopy, grating and unlikeable. For me, it's truly hideous.
