Well I finished my film. Here goes nothing.

If I go dark and the film is removed, and you don't see me on Saturday, expect the worst. You are all really great people. And I'm sorry if this causes you lot any trouble. I tried my best. I really did.

Hey, thanks. Sorry my OP seemed a bit overdramatic, but I was having a bit of a low and I do have a tendency to overthink shit and get paranoid.

I always prepare for the worst in situations like this. Sorry if anyone got worried.

I'm feeling a lot better, thanks

Just managed to watch the first 20 minutes but I admire the bravery, explanations and the tour-guide. You've got a good voice-over voice.

Also dig the Nova/DC font, one minor criticism would be that the text passages on-screen disappear a little too quickly (either that or I'm in The Slow Readers Club).

I thought I'd left ample time on my caption. Oh well. It's YouTube. Just press the pause button if it goes too fast.

I hope I didn't mangle his last name.

I don't know if you knew this but he used to be in a band with Mark in the mid 80's called Siegfried's Magick Box.

Well, it was a TWO cuppa tea film in the end.

I am planning my own visit to Sheffield later this year so it was nice to have a look around via this film. Particularly struck by the art around the city both officially and unoffically displayed (I do enjoy good grafitti!)

Not going to lie, I was a little worried about the content with your comment - and intrigued of course - but it was all rather lovely. I would have edited it down or cut it into episodes, as 2 hours is a long time, but that may have detracted from its charm - besides it is yours to do as you wish - and what do I know anyway?

Nice one Sarah biggrin

Thanks!

I had thought about cutting it down, but it was an arseache to edit in the first place, especially with all the VOs trying to sync them up to the pictures and such. My raw footage was over 9 hours long!

I've watched about 3/4 so far and really enjoyed it. I was a bit daunted at the start when I realised it was 2 hours long, but then it flew by. I'll think more about it when I've watched the rest.

I've bit the bullet and sent it to all relevant parties on Twitter. Wish me luck. I'm worried shit is going to go down, so if I get a Cease and Desist notice, or some other legal trouble and have to remove the film from Youtube please know that I really appreciate everyone who managed to see the film.

I don't think it will cause any legal trouble - not entirely sure what has happened between you and Mark in the past, but the film doesn't appear to cross any boundaries as far as I can see. However, Twitter is something else so I understand your anxiety. For the record, I am glad I watched it smile

Resurrecting this thread because I re-edited to make the captions longer, because a lot of people made comments about it. So here is the "Director's Cut" (haha) of EHAT.

I'm resurrecting this thread because I'm actually going through some mental distress, related to this film. I'm losing sleep, I'm bursting into tears, I'm second guessing myself and questioning my judgement. It's a good thing I'm on holiday right now, because if I was at work, I'd probably be cracking up.

I uploaded the film on the 27th of July and retweeted it to all relevant parties, but since then I have had NOTHING. Not a retweet, not a like, not a comment nor even a thumbs up. I feel like a giant failure right now. I haven't heard any feedback at all, not even from Nick and he'll retweet anything even vaguely Pulp related.

Call me paranoid, but I feel like my film is being boycotted for some reason, like this general indifference to my film is beginning to feel like I'm being punished for something.

I'd even take a negative comment like "Your film is shit. You wasted, my time and your own time" ANYTHING.

Don't get me wrong, I appreciate the feedback from those who have seen the film, I even took it on board when I went back and re-edited it.

I worked really hard on this film, and it's breaking my heart just seeing everything going to waste like this.

I wouldn't take it as a personal slight, Sarah. It can be painful being creative; spending hours and hours/days of your own time on a project, and then having to try and plug the thing where you're putting yourself out there for raw judgement only to be met with a fair bit of tumbleweed.
I've done it with my own music and like you say, it's easy to feel indifference being more painful than an extreme reaction even if that happens to be negative.

But...people's lack of attention spans and the battle for their time and attention while they're glued to an interactive screen (sometimes two) for hours a day, is a bloody difficult one to fight against. A two hour film might seem daunting in that context. Have you thought of ormade any little teasers/trailers for it to elicit some attention/views that would be easier to gain and for the viewer to digest?

Eamonn, EHAT is on Youtube. There is a pause button. There is a Watch Later function. They don't have to watch the whole thing in one go. And what your saying about it being too long, I'm sorry but I have to ask, are you serious? Most Marvel films fall into the three hour category, look at LOTR, look at Oppenheimer. Two hours is nothing. Also it's for free. You're not paying for it. None of my films are monetized, or even my channel.

Not that I am comparing myself to Ken Jacobs here, but the 2004 cut of "Star Spangled to Death" is 6h 42minutes long, and if SOMEONE can sit through that, they can definitely sit and "endure" 2 hours of mine!

And yes, that was directed at who you think it was.

I certainly agree with Eamonn that its not a personal slight, or a boycott. I liked your film and its clear how much thought and work has gone into it. One of the things that distinguishes it is the niche it occupies, but maybe thats why its not getting the broader attention that youd hoped for. All of us on this site are here for the deep cuts and the minutiae, but people who listen to Pulp on the whole are less invested in them than we are. I was reading reviews of Party Clowns on Amazon today (for no real reason - just goes to show!) and some of them were hilarious, seeing nothing of value whatsoever in their pre-HnH material. And I suppose people like Nick are appealing to the broader audience too (and the bands setlists this year did for sure) and this might account for the lack of retweets. Im confident your film and the journey leading to it is going to retain real cache here, where the people who really care about the band lurk, and even be the stuff of legend Sarah. Id be proud of what youve achieved, if I could devote myself to a project like that, so please dont be discouraged

How can you say it's niche, when it it's about one of THE most famous bands in British music history??!! A band whose last tour, may I remind you WAS SOLD OUT EVERY SINGLE NIGHT THEY WERE PLAYING!!

Did anyone say to Florian Habicht when LDaS was announced, that his film wasn't going to succeed? That nobody would see it? Because it was too niche? It won a FUCKING NME AWARD! And I didn't have the benefit of a production company or a budget behind me. It was me, on my own with a couple of cameras and a mid range editing suite, trying to do the best I could with what I had. Doesn't that actually mean something?

Nobody said to Sturdy that TAB was too niche. Hell, Nick and Richard even came to his launch party.

I can't even get a fucking retweet.

Hi Sarah, I've watched the first ten minutes so far and like it a lot, unfortunately my watching/listening time is limited, at I wasn't around this board when you first posted it, but going to make time for it now. I believe that the most important part of any art is the way we experience it, and it's fascinating to see someone digging in to their own relationship with music and places like this.

I know how you feel about the lack of visible interest - my main project (a podcast called Centuries of Sound) has been featured in The Guardian, Financial Times and New Yorker but when I put an episode out I still just get a handful of retweets and perhaps one nice comment at most. It's really frustrating when you've put a lot of time and energy into it, just seems that the internet is so restricted in the late social media era - if you tweet something with a link it's basically treated as spam right now, they don't want people leaving the site. I also have a second, more personal project (this one's called Texture & Artefact) and one of the episodes this year had basically zero engagement of any sort. It was a month's hard work and I think it's good work! But promoting anything is such an unrewarding slog.

Anyway, I will retweet from my Pulpsongs Twitter account, once I can remember the password. And I might have some tea for you to try! Keep at it!

Unfortunately, I have been too busy recently to even start watching it, but I will and I will feed back on this thread. I have also been too busy to update my website (nothing new, just changing some links), Twitter or Instagram.

I have found the same with Twitter, I can post something and it gets little to no interactions yet others will get loads. I may be wrong but I think it has something to do with timing. I usually get up around 5am on weekdays and if I post then, it is superseded by other posts before anyone else gets up and logs on. If I post at midday or on a weekend, the chances are that people will see it quite quickly as they are more likely to be "active" around that time.

You may wish to try Instagram but that doesn't allow links in posts, you can put the link in your bio or story though. I have found it quite consistent in terms of interactions.

OK, so what plunged me into this depression is the fact that ester (@kIopptimistic on twitter) wrote a thesis on I Spy and it seemed within minutes Nick was already retweeting it and commenting it and it just seem fair. No disrespect to ester it was a really good article, it just got me really upset that it seemed I was being tactically ignored like this.

Hi Ian,

I did actually put links up on both Instagram and Facebook, but so far nothing. and i don't want to keep pestering people in case that gets me into trouble and i end up getting legally excluded from future concerts - or worse.

It just makes me feel worthless.
