Sadly, he was asked about this on Radio 6 last night and said they aren't recording anything, something along the lines of being old school and you've got to come and see us.

He seems to be up to lots of bits and pieces, so maybe those snippets we catch of him being spotted in a studio are to do with those. For example, the last few days I have seen this being promoted round Twitter:

Oh... That's disappointing. Cant believe he wont eventually release a record though, he's clearly testing songs this year and something will come up next year. Maybe he has not got enough material ?

Come and see us is a bit much since he hardly did a full world tour biggrin

The Daniel knox song is great, album is out in December. Do hope there's more songs with him as he's fairly heavily 'featured' in the press.

Earth, N16

The former Pulp singer may have felt he had nothing to lose, because his new songs and performance had a wild creativity and cavalier bravery

November 2 2018, 12:01am,The Times

In this spectacular London show, Jarvis Cocker was back to doing what he does best being a pop star

After a decade of extracurricular activities including hosting a radio show on BBC 6 Music, working as an editor-at-large for Faber and appearing on Bargain Hunt, Jarvis Cocker is back to doing what he does best: being a pop star. Hes not the worlds best singer. His dancing can only be described as special. Yet Cocker has some kind of star power that is absolutely electric. Helped by a band featuring musicians on harp and violin, and a recently opened venue occupying a wonderfully derelict art deco former cinema, Cockers return to the stage was a triumph.

The former singer of Pulp may well have felt that, having been away so long, he was starting from the ground up and had nothing to lose, because his new songs from a yet-to-be-released album and indeed his performance had a kind of wild creativity and cavalier bravery. The concert began with two living statues coming to the stage dressed as a pharaoh and a striped man; fitting for a number about living statues called Sometimes I am Pharaoh.

The next song tells the story of evolution in six minutes, said Cocker of Must I Evolve, and although the educational value was frankly minimal, its nervy, jagged, post-punk sound was fantastic. In a reversal of the norm, the new material at this concert, unheard by almost everyone present, was more exciting than the old.

Meanwhile, Cocker filled the spaces between the songs with plenty of Cocker-isms: doing dance moves that made elaborate use of his fingers, distributing sweets and attempting a bit of apple-bobbing (it was Halloween), and telling the crowd: It wouldnt be the same if you werent here . . . Wed just be rehearsing.

A decade-old ballad called C***s are Still Running the World turned into a disturbingly prescient singalong, while the encore featured the old Pulp favourite His n Hers and, in tribute to the one night of the year when goths come into their own, Bela Lugosis Dead by the goth favourites Bauhaus. Throughout, Cocker was going for it as if he were headlining Glastonbury Festival rather than an old cinema in north London. It suggested that those years off have provided him with the rest and relaxation needed to fulfil his calling as a performer whose combination of wit, awkwardness and rampant exhibitionism make for a potent mix. Its great to have him back.

Listening back to what he said on Round Table yesterday, kind of reminded me of his approach for Further Complications when they did a fair few preview shows in 2008 before the album came out the following year (and imo, they didn't replicate the quality of the songs in studio). At the time he spoke about trying stuff out first and liking the fact that you got an immediate response from people to music they hadn't heard before. He said the same thing as yesterday about how that's the way music always used to be. So, it could be that he's still enjoying the live experimental phase and not beholden to the whole album-tour cycle thing. He has a great relationship with Rough Trade, I guess they are ready when he is.

Who knows, maybe that's what part-scuppered the Pulp reunion doing new stuff? None of them seem too enamoured with the studio. Hardly surprising given how long they spent on the last two Pulp albums.
It would be a real shame if these songs don't get recorded properly though. Maybe, as has been said, he doesn't have enough songs for a full record yet anyway, meaning a new album might be...what, possibly a year away at the earliest?
I can see them doing the festivals next summer, he loves Glasto so any excuse...

As Pulp/Jarvis fans though, we do suffer! Hearing him say there's already so much music out there without adding to it etc. fair enough but enough people want to hear your music so it's not like a worthless cause. I wish he had more confidence/arrogance about his work!

There's probably an album being recorder or already recorded. I dont buy for a second that he would put all this work (recruiting a band, rehearsing... etc) not to follow this with a full tour and album. We know Jarvis doesn't like to do thing the "normal" way, but here it's not just a nostalgia reunion (and money) we had with Pulp. Oh and that Daniel Knox song is great ! Kinda remind me of Room 29. Let's not forget we had that amazing record last year. Jarvis has not exactly been away for 10 years, he's done Room 29, which is a masterpiece.

Seems to be always doing something like last year's Scott Walker prom, Room 29 etc.  Have to say on first hearing these new songs collectively are his strongest solo work and different enough from Pulp to be considered solo. The first two solo albums were a little hit and miss for me as if he was trying to find a non-Pulp sound.

I think Jarvis is always interesting even if not particulary prolific except for that 1992-1995 period.

I saw an instagram post about someone being in a studio with Jarvis, but it didn't have any indication of what they were recording there. As he seems to have a lot of irons in the fire these days, it could probably have been all sorts of things and not necessarily his own album.

Hmm...checked the Instagram post you linked to again and it specifically mentioned Jarv Is:

sunnysteelbandWe almost forgot (how is that possible) that we performed (real ) Steel Drums on @jarvisbransoncockers new work Jarv Is which is big news for us and the multi-talented songwriter We recorded it in the world famous @abbeyroadstudios and had a great time contributing to the release

Maybe he wasn't totally satisfied with the recordings and is reassessing them or they had to be stopped suddenly...

Seems odd that he'd be so definitive (in the negative) when asked by Lamacq about recording. Preserving mystery for as long as possible?

I have a feeling he's gonna release it overnight, with no prior promotion. It's almost what happened with the new Good, Bad, Queen records. No one knew about it until an ad got spotted in a magazine, just 3 weeks before the release.

I see what you mean. It's a while ago, I couldn't remember the details or how much I'd read into it - nothing by the looks of it. Maybe he just wants to manage expectations, - no expectation = no disappointment!

I've Listened to the Daniel Knox collaboration mentioned above a few times recently. I must say I like Jarvis' singing on this track and without meaning to be rude that is something I certainly haven't felt able to say for a long time. I know he is going for a lounge type feel on the vocal, but it somehow reminds me of some of his 80's Pulp singing. This track and the 'Likely Stories' EP are the releases I've liked the most since the first solo album, so that gives me hope and something to look forward to with whatever he does with these new songs he's been doing live.

Also whatever came of that book that was talked about the same time the Brett Anderson one was announced? Could that be holding a new album up?

that Daniel Knox collaboration sounds like an outtake from Room 29, marvelous, cant stop listening to it.

Lounge type vocals Jarvis is great.
