Only because more people have heard of them. I know plenty of people who like Pulp, but dont really know much other than Different Class. And because that was such a big hit album they dont really care to seek out a hits album. Maybe not wholly comparable, but I suspect it is similar with Happy Mondays and Primal Scream. Plenty of people have Pills n Thrills and Screamadelica, but doubt many have a hits album.

True dat. I wonder how a new Pulp compilation would have fared had it been released during the reunion.

From the Hits tracklisting, add Misshapes/Mile End*/Like A Friend*/After You (as the promo single) and remove Underwear and Miner's Strike.

*Not singles or hits but among Pulp's most popular/streamed songs post-split.

Amazed Mile End & Like a Friend are most streamed.  Maybe people listening to soundtracks. Mis-shapes should have been on Hits, but that would have been 6 Different Class songs.  O.U. should have been on if Razzmatazz was on as it was a single as well.  Personally, I think My Legendary Girlfriend and Countdown should be on a Pulp compilation though the different record labels may make that a little tricky.

Unlikely to happen now.

Like A Friend was featured on a popular adult animated series in the US, (plus it was a bonus track on the US version of TIH). Not a huge surprise I guess that Pulp played it on one of the US chat shows live during the reunion.

Mile End probably benefits from the enduring appeal of Trainspotting and its soundtrack.

Underwear was a Common People b-side but wasn't a stand-alone single/hit in the sense Misshapes was (Double A-side status notwithstanding), so should be left off any Pulp hits compilation.

I would squeeze OU in if an 80 minutes 1CD capacity allowed. It didn't chart at all though, while Razzmatazz did hit the lofty heights of number 80! (and had a video)

The singles from Seppy are a little obscure by comparison and obviously are non-Universal licensed.

As for unlikely to happen, that seems to be more about their (non-) relationship with Universal than commercial viability. Suede released another best-of this week. OK, there's 3 reunion albums worth of tracks to add but no one will know them apart from the die-hards. They'll probably still make a few hundred sales from casual browsers though (it's on sale in some supermarkets at the moment).

If they were going to go pre-Island with a compilation, I reckon they'd also have to abandon the singles-only approach. You'd need some album tracks in there to make it properly representative, plus I'm not sure Everybody's Problem and Master of the Universe really show those incarnations of Pulp at their best...

I'm reminded of a Paul Heaton quote when that Beautiful South best-of unexpectedly sold mega numbers - "I think we're a lot of people's second favourite band..."

Just got A Short Album About Love on vinyl. Not sure if it is the same for the CDs, but there is a download code to get the LP + bonus material.

currently under £15 at Amazon.

The LPs all have a download code to get the extra tracks. The CDs come with a 2nd disc (in the boxset anyway)

I have spent since Friday slowing making my way through this lot. It's really great! The linear notes for each album are like a mini Hannon autobiography.

Also worth noting the LPs & CDs are remastered versions of each album (except the latest 2) & the download codes are super 2020 remixes of each album. I haven't got so far yet to know whether or not they are worth it - but on Spotify has the 2020 remix of Promenade to compare versions before purchasing.

There's a great film/concert of the Office Politics songs on YouTube from last year set in a "real" French bureau with actors. Watched it last night, great footage (roaming cameras on-stage, close-ups of sexy synths etc.) Really got me in the mood for tomorrow's Barbican livestream. And I'll say it again  A Feather In Your Cap - what a tearjerker (The Tearjerker Returns?).

Seen that a while back, really worth it.

And may i add, Room 29 is the perfect bridge between Pulp and Divine Comedy. To me, Neil Hannon and Jarvis could have made a similar record if they had worked together.

Have to see what I get when I finish work today.   I did note this on the Amazon blurb....

2nd disc is the DVD - A Short Film About A Short Album About Love a previously unreleased 50-minute film of the Shepherds Bush Empire concert at which Short Album.. was recorded

Don't suppose that is on the download...

I only discovered this recently and I agree, it's fantastic. I don't think they played "A Feather in Your Cap" much live last year so that was great to see.

Oh I watched the DVD last night and it is superb! There are 2 or 3 songs from it that were put up on youtube by the drummer, Miggy (RIP) a few years ago.

It was never released because after having spent a fortune filming it (Fun fact: the funds for this huge concert/album were possible because of Edwyn Collins' 'A Girl Like You'), the record company suddenly chucked all of their toys out of their pram after the orchestra sent in a bill for image rights.

To finally see it is magical!

Well-put together stream from the Barbican tonight. A bit short as a gig, just an hour, but great performance by Neil and band. I always forget how awkward he is with his in-between bantz.

I'm really curious. I have ordered (but not yet received) the boxset, without ever having heard a full song of theirs. first time I did that. but a lot of people whose opinions I value seem to love this band and the box set looked so lovely and complete that I decided to buy it. I can't wait...

Had a listen to some of it this morning, the Country version of "Mastermind" was very unexpected.

The last two albums did come with bonus discs when they were released first time round so I'm guessing they didn't see the value in reissuing them so soon.

I thought they had reissued those with different material on the second disks?

He's a funny fecker Hannon but sometimes it gets a bit too fey/silly for my tastes. So I couldnt justify spending £100 on a career retrospective as I would only dig half to two thirds of it.

Given what I spent on the Barbican gigs, another £100 wouldnt make much odds.  However I think I will just listen on Deezer rather than buying the CDs.  However the vinyl is very tempting...

I gave in.  I couldnt resist at £102.94 on Amazon and bought the CD box set.

Ooh, is it? Closer to £150 last time I checked. Spending too much money online on myself since Lockdown (music, clothes, books...), have to resist these deals or I'll never be a homeowner.

Not a homewrecker then

Also have to add in £120 on a Bowie box set (Who can I be now - vinyl), £10 for last Franz Ferdinand LP.  I might need a bigger house...

... anyway its bonus money from not having to spend on travel, gigs, pubs, theatre, cinema, football etc.   However my teenage daughter has a tendency to lose things that I need to budget for.  Coats, Masks, Gloves, Zip cards (4 since September!), etc.

Now that the DC box has sold-out, I kinda regret not buying it. Anyone who did....do you know whether the individual 2CD reissues of TDC's back-cat released at the same time as the box last autumn have the same liner notes/essays by Neil as the Cupid, Folly And Time boxset has? I thought I might buy some of the individual albums, especially if the content is the same (albeit not in that cute book-format as per the box). Thanks.

I bought both the CD boxset and some of the individual vinyls to fill gaps in my collection & the vinyl inserts have the same liner notes. They are great too as Neil is pretty open and honest in them & they read like a mini Hannon autobiography.

Cool. Which albums notes mention Pulp/Jarvis? (I'm probably that sad that any Pulp references might tempt me off the fence into buying that particular album).

I'm pretty sure it would be Cassanova. I'll check in the morning.

Yep Cassanova. He's basically saying how he needed to do a record that would get him on the britpop bandwagon & mentions His name Hers. I'm sure he mentions 'Common People specifically somewhere too.
