I was just wondering how the extended versions of "Live Bed Show" came about. They played this song live a bit differently during 1995-6 ranging from a version with a short instrumental after the intro as per the b-side to "Disco 2000" and there were also the versions with an extra instrumental at the end and some additional lyrics (this version effectively doubled the length of the original). Also, when they played it in 2001-2, it had a lengthy instrumental at the end but no additional lyrics, I have always thought this was an attempt to rework an old song like they did with "Common People", "FEELINGCALLEDLOVE" and "The Fear".

Was this something that they came up with in rehearsals or was the extended version originally intended for the album then deemed unsuitable by the band so trimmed down a bit? I couldn't imagine them going into the studio in late 1995 to record the extra instrumental bit. Also, was a studio version of the very-extended version (see V96) ever recorded?

The little solo before the first verse was part of the original track, but was chopped out of the final released version before being reinstated live.

Don't know how the extra verse came about but it was definitely a later addition - maybe from soundcheck jamming or what have you. I don't think the lyrics were really finished - he sort of jabbers and mumbles them a bit, in the way he always did when he hasn't quite finalised something. Ever the pro.

In what way was The Fear reworked?
I'd assumed the C&UBDV was the 'original' & it had just been trimmed down in the studio for TIH. Perhaps I missed something?
I saw them a few times (festival appearences, Eden Project*, Auto**) in 01/02 & several reunion tour shows...

*which I would count as Forest Tour?
**which I suppose is technically another festival appearence...?

I'm not able to check right now but during 1998, they performed the "extended" version then during 2000/2001 they performed the "album" version only it was noticeably faster (and a good 30 seconds or so shorter). Granted, the changes weren't as obvious as "Common People" or "FEELINGCALLEDLOVE" but I still think of it as a rework. I think that the performance from Reading 2000 which was on TV is on YouTube so comparing that to the album version may be a good idea.

And yes, I think you may be right about them trimming it down for the album, perhaps someone decided that having 2 songs at around 8 minutes each wasn't a good idea (the other being "Seductive Barry"). The "extended" version was performed on Jools Holland which aired just after the album was released if I remember rightly so it existed a couple of months before the tour commenced.

Oh, and completists may wish to note - there are two other versions of "The Fear" on the US promo. Don't get excited though, one is a radio edit which is the same as the album version except it fades out early and the other is a "Research Hook" (which was sometimes misinterpreted as a new b-side) and that is simply a 10 second sample of the chorus. I have got this promo somewhere so I will upload the tracks if anyone is interested (though you could do homemade versions of both).
