Question about Jarvis and the Jimmy Savile thing
Permalink

Sorry if this is a taboo subject, and hope to not ruffle any feathers. Not really sure how to word it . I do not live in the UK so never really followed all the events surrounding the whole Jimmy Savile fiasco, nor really knew much about him apart from the just who he was basically and what he did.  And that Jarvis is, or was a fan.

The other day I was watching a Pulp thing on YouTube and saw some comments referencing Jarvis having had a radio show episode in honor of him after he died, and people weren't happy about it. Understandably so, but I never heard it nor can find it. Of course Jarvis pays homage lots of people for their work alone and was also probably part BBC demancourse at the time I guess it was still all just rumor about Savile?

And he supposedly did some interview with Savile that was somewhat a big problem for the BBC and "very revealing about Savile", and I guess Jarvis was questioning him and Savile was being difficult either him and the BBC took all traces of it off the internet and continue to. I only saw vague things regarding it. What was all that about anyway? Can someone shed light on it or know what happened? And has Jarvis openly discussed his stance on the Savile fiasco?

I wouldn't be surprised if Jarvis was a fan of Savile when he was alive - I was, lots of people were. All the sordid tales didn't really come out until about a year after he died. There were rumours, but it was playground gossip that you couldn't really take seriously without anything to back it up. He was obviously an eccentric flamboyant character who was cagey about his private life, but it seemed a bit of a jump to assume he was therefore up to no good. Obviously in the light of what subsequently emerged, we were all catastrophically wrong on that front.

In terms of Jarvis interviewing him, I remember that documentary he did about the history of pop TV where he went up to his flat in Leeds. I don't know if it was particularly revealing though. Some banter about sitting on his bed 'where all the action happens' which is obviously pretty queasy in retrospect, but seemed harmless at the time.

About the documentary. I'd seen lots that it was taken all off the net. And many dead links, YouTube had it removed and nothing anywhere. And Jarvis seemed slightly unnerved during it?

Jarvis was, apparently himself the subject of an abuse attack that was prevented, when he was a kid. That and having your own kids (I'm not sure if Albert was born at the time of the Savile pop doc he did) would be the type of things to make you extra-wary of someone that might have committed hideous acts on children on the scale Savile did.

But no one spoke out until he was dead so I imagine Jarvis was as in the dark as anybody else and any whispers about his conduct were just that, unfounded, all the years before that.

Jarvis was obsessed by pop culture as a kid and as one of the conduits to it, Savile would have been an important presence growing-up as he was for lots of kids of that generation.

Rather unfortunate that Pulp appeared on Live & Kicking to do a version of Disco 2000 at the end of 1995 and were involved in a sketch with Gary Glitter so I imagine Jarvis's skin crawls recalling both events.

Oh wow. I had no idea. I think I remember Jarvis mentioning in some interview I'd read way back about a thwarted attack but thought he meant something else.

Gary Glitter is a disgusting piece of trash, too.

I've seen nothing to indicate that Jarvis and Savile were friends. They might have talked to each other at celebrity events but that's not really the same is it? From what I can gather Savile was a bit of a loner and had very few friends.

I'm not sure what this interview/documentary is that you're referring to. The only substantial TV appearance with Jarvis and Savile I'm aware of is this, which I don't think can be what you mean: pulpwiki.net/Jarvis/14July2005JarvisCockersTVPopRules

You're, erm, not getting Jarvis mixed up with Louis Theroux are you?

Who's that?

Never saw that interview . No idea..might be the one people refer to. No idea. Just seen before posts about just a random interview that supposedly BBC took all traces of off the net. conspiracy theory shit. I think. Was probably for copyright.

Is that one online anywhere? The one you posted? Looks funny.

Found it but audio gone due to copyright.

People made it sound like was because of BBC cover up. That's funny. Would be nice to hear it, looks like a really cool documentary! All sorts of stuff on it.

Looks like it's a Channel 4 show - might be on 4oD?

Louis Theroux is a journalist who did a famous (and in retrospect quite disturbing) documentary with Savile a few years ago called When Louis Met Jimmy. He wears specs and is a bit geeky so it's just possible - just! - that someone who isn't very interested in either might confuse him with Jarvis.

So that's Jimmy Saville, Gary Glitter and of course dressing up as Rolf Harris for Stars In Their Eyes....all he needs is Stuart Hall and he's got the collection I think doh

Ah, well no idea. I didn't actually see the clip they were referring to and no title was given. It was from years ago, too.  Only thing I know is that it was a BBC program.  So, I'd have known if it was Jarvis or not. Non fans might've thought it was him and it wasn't, but was probably this video you posted.

Can't remember if Jarvis said anything when Savile died, but wouldn't be surprised if he said something on Sunday Service.  Somebody has an archive don't they?

There were a lot of tributes to Savile following his death. Many people (including me) found him an entertaining eccentric. He seemed an odd man, and a bit sinister, but it's only in retrospect that all these signs seem to indicate his evil.  The BBC probably encouraged tributes to Savile - cross platform recognition of a BBC legend. If Jarvis said nice things about him when alive / post mortem he probably felt embarrassed or ashamed later.

As Sturdy said, I doubt Savile had any close friends, probably partly how he got away it.  He seemed unknowable. The two Theroux documentaries - and other commentary in the press - support the view that he was a loner.

Unfortunate coincidence about Jarvis' Rolf impersonation - it was a funny clip, all the joy is sucked out of it now. Rolf shocked me more. I was amused by Savile, but he was never likeable. I liked Rolf, he seemed kindly. Nasty bastards don't often advertise the fact.

Been listening back to all my Scott Walker stuff this week: Scott 2 - sleevenotes by Jonathan King; Take It Easy With The Walker Brothers - Jimmy Savile quoted on the sleeve. Vague acquaintance with a villain is no sign of guilt.

Just catching up on all this, I've been on holiday.

My memory is there was a Sunday Service devoted quite heavily to Savile when he died - as others have suggested, there was probably a lot of stuff across the BBC. The only thing I remember about it was apparently Savile was one of the first DJs to use 2 turntables to mix music together. I looked in the archive and the episode of 6 Nov 2011 is completely blank with no title only the date - I wonder if that was the one as all the others are very thoroughly documented. Although a  lot of people profess to having felt Savile was really creepy, no-one appears to have really known anything definite. He never made a secret of "liking the ladies" and always had teenage girls hanging off his arms on Top of the Pops. Plenty of men are very open about enjoying sex, but you just assume it's with consenting adult partners. Savile obviously took most of the people in most of the time. He had a children's programmed on Saturday teatime BBC1 for half the seventies, making kid's dreams come true. I've wondered since we found out what we now know, was that just a completely cynical way of getting to kids, or did he have some kind of genuine love for kids that got warped in some horrible way somehow. People are complicated and multi-dimensional things and just because they do some awful things doesn't necessarily mean that everything they do is evil. He also got knighted and was very matey with Maggie Thatcher through all his children's hospital charity work, which we now know was where a lot of the most sickening things happened. I just had a look round and apparently they can't take his knighthood away after he's died. But they have dismantled the fancy headstone where he was buried in Scarborough with great fanfare at the time (http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/9596698/Jimmy-Saviles-4000-gravestone-to-be-dismantled-following-allegations.html). There's also the fact the seventies culture was much more sexist generally than today and a lot of behaviours that seem very inappropriate to us today were fairly normal then and wouldn't have attracted attention. Liz Kershaw has certainly talked about being groped working a Radio 1 and blokes wondering what was the matter with her for complaining about it. Some of the others mentioned in other posts came across as likeable entertainers - Rolf Harris painted a portrait of the Queen! There was a TV programme about it, him chatting away to her while he painted. I used to always listen out for Stuart Hall's football reports on a Saturday afternoon, the highlight of Sports Report. I don't really know anything about the psychology of abusers, but there seem to be an awful lot out there, who given any position of power will use it to exploit the vulnerable. Think of all the reports of children's homes, sports coaches, religious organisations of all kinds, almost anywhere. It's all done in dark and hidden places leaving people around completely unsuspecting.

So from Jarvis' point of view, he probably formed much the same kind of impression as many other people and saw some intersting musical dimensions in Savile's DJ career and is probably as horrified now as many other people who produced tributes at the time. But most people were taken in by Savile and the others, not just Jarvis.
