And changed the lyrics slightly. Very weird to litsen to a recorded version after having litsened to a bootleg for so long: http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p04m3pqg

Thanks for this. He was teasing a special surprise at the end of this week's Sunday Service and I forgot to listen.

I always thought the bootleg was really endearing and that the song deserved a proper recording. I don't know if I was right. The production seems so thin. And the vocals are mixed so high. Maybe I'm just a grouch who hates new things.

I think it was written by Jarvis and Hawley around 2000 when Richard began contributing to the recording sessions that eventually created We Love Life.

I really enjoyed the version he and Hawley performed live at the Royal Albert Hall a few years ago. It's strong enough to be recorded properly and released though I'm not sure this is it. The vocals aren't the best and it seems a bit half-arsed, done for fun like "It's Christmas, let's try that new year song we did years ago" with the song just getting into its stride before the segue into Auld Lang Syne.
Still, better than nowt.

Interesting that Jarvis returns to that latter period of Pulp (though I guess this wasn't technically a Pulp song) again to give us an end of year gift after the unexpected release of After You four years ago.

Maybe he's having nostalgia for that period, that's when they wasted too much material to be honest. I wish they went back to those demos and made a new album out of it.

I mean, something built around After You, Got to Have Love, Cuckoo, Quiet Revolution... You already got four strong tunes.

But not in the style of 2012 After You, i cant say i dig that version. hmm

Its also a Hawley song, from his first album I belive. Anyway I also prefer the recording from Royal Albert Hall but its a nice gesture. Let's hope for Cuckoo next time!

Yes, Hawley made it into the song Naked In Pitsmoor for his debut mini-album.

I wonder how much involvement Richard had in Pulp songs from that era like My Mistake, Grandfather's Nursery etc. And of course he played a fair bit on Jarvis' solo debut.

Purely speculating and surprised I've not thought of it before but how would you cats feel about a full album by Jarvis and Hawley?

Yes, yes yes! I would have high expectations on a Jarvis/Hawley album, but it could be really good

Eamonn, I can't believe we have never thought of this before!! This 'cat' thinks it is a great idea. I want to hear that album NOW and to see them perform it all live, too. (Come on Jarve and Rich - you know it makes sense).

Didn't think of it the other night when Hawley appeared on-stage, but the Hogmanay gig would have been a perfect opportunity for "Happy New Year" to be performed!

Oh and Happy New Year (Babies)!

See what I did there evileye ?

Ha! Now that you mention it...

Pretty chuffed with what we got though. Which is an understatement and a half.

Oh, absolutely. No griping here. The whole event was great but that triple whammy of Background Noise, Lippy and just another Manic Monday Morning was just...*chef's kiss*

Re Jarvis & Hawley writing together - didn't they play a song at one of the Save The Leadmill shows a while back that they'd written but we hadn't heard before?

Just googled it and yes, it's called "A Sunset":

www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2022/aug/10/jarvis-cocker-joins-pulp-bandmate-onstage-to-support-sheffield-leadmill">www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2022/aug/10/jarvis-cocker-joins-pulp-bandmate-onstage-to-support-sheffield-leadmill

I'd love a Cocker & Hawley tour in their dotage, the two of them sitting down on-stage with a couple of guitars and a keyboard, playing songs they've written together, some covers and sharing anecdotes about their past. The "Help The Aged 2040" tour mebbe. Jesus, JC will turn 77 that year!!
