Questions about Jarvis, Pulp and the train 'incident'

New to this particular forum. Lurked a while and very impressive place this is! Hardly any Pulp discussion groups. And also somewhat new to the expanded world of Pulp.

Got a few questions.

For those of you who have met Jarvis or know those who have, or worked with him...what's he like? Is he as genuine as he seems? Would love to hear stories.

Some ongoing debate among fans goes around regarding his involvement in participating in adverts has rubbed some the wrong way. Curious what the big deal is? These aren't companies he's spoken out against exactly? Kind of confused..if anyone can clarify.

Also, I had read on archives posted from a few yrs back regarding a him having a freak out demanding first class on a train but refused to pay the fee and got kicked off. Did this turn out to be true or rumor? I can't see him doing that.

I guess want to know if he's definitely the cool person he comes across as. I really like Pulp and admire Jarvis and I guess just wanna make sure they aren't like other bands that have let me down :(

Hi AcrylicCommonPerson - great to have you here. Sorry no-one's replied, I guess no-one knows the answer to your question.

I can't answer your question about the "train incident" as I don't know anything about it, but it does sound unlikely to me from what I've ever heard. Maybe something happened that got misconstrued by an observer, who knows, or maybe he had a good reason to be annoyed about something. Most things I've ever seen written about Jarvis suggest he's pretty chilled generally and if not, there's probably a reason. I remember during the reunion tour for example, there was some discussion of him having a go at Mark rather unreasonably over something during a gig - he talks about that in this interview below on Acrylic Afternoons. He does look quite wound up often on stage if there's something not right, but I imagine that's a pretty stressful situation with loads of people watching and you're wanting to put on a good show. As suggested there, when in Pulp, the rest of them are never going put up with Jarvis, or anyone else for that matter, getting above themselves. They're all perfectly capable of standing up for themselves. Russell talks in his recent book about all sorts of tensions within the band, but none of them are exactly shrinking violets being pushed around. There's an amusing interview with Mark on the Pulp film DVD where he's asked if Jarvis is still a common person, to which he thinks and replies, "he has the potential to be", then talks about the amount of attention he gets when he goes anywhere would drive most people mad, but he does his best to be patient with it all. I saw him once in Sheffield station, the morning after the arena gig and he  was mobbed by a group of screaming women wanting pictures and messing about with phones (it was the noise that attracted my attention), so he got them to sort themselves out while he got his ticket out of the machine, then went back and let them get their pictures and whatever they wanted. I imagine with celebrities in general, some people treat them like they're public property wherever they are and can be pretty disrespectful or intrusive and they'd be quite within their rights to get annoyed.

I'm not sure how to explain the advert thing - I don't have a problem with it in general, might depend on the product though. It would be best for someone who feels strongly to explain it for themselves. I think there's a feeling that with more "indie" artists, everything they do should be for its artistic merits and not merely for commercial gain, but it seems to me everyone else has to sell their labour for financial gain to survive.

Fran,
Thank-you got your thoughtful response! :)

That interview you posted was very insightful. Had never read it before.

I haven't read Russell's book yet. Am curious...what kind of strife does he talk about? Is Jarvis hard to work with? Or just all around all band members kind of clash usual thing? Kind of shocked..thought they all sort of were rather close. But I guess in any closeness..there will be intense differences at times. Etc especially when forced to be around each other 24/7 in such a situation. And creatively. I really wanna hear more about the book.

Agreed on the advert thing. You seem very sensible.

But yeah.. had read a few things recently that I'd found baffling. And thought there must be more to it.

I kind of like it when celebrities I like do ads! They never really seem to make me want to buy the product, but it's always amusing for me to see or hear them in a different type of media. I even made a YouTube playlist of all the Sainsbury's ads Jarvis did the voiceover for, I think they're funny! Plus everyone needs to make some extra money here & there, so I don't really have anything against it. (though as an American perhaps I'm biased since I have no way of going to Sainsbury's anyways...)

As far as the band working together, I believe I've read or heard (can't remember where unfortunately) that they never spent a terrific amount of time hanging out with each other outside of actual band work. I haven't read Russ' book (yet) but I did read a few excerpts where he bitches about Jarvis' clothes being far worse than his own but everyone was praising Jarvis' regardless, & Jarvis' demand for "brown light" which Russell *insisted* was simply "dark orange" but Jarvis was rewarded with his brown light in the end. In fact, I've been informed there's a whole chapter entitled "Brown Light". Seems a fascinating read.

Also welcome! :)

Ha!!! The brown light story. That sounds really funny. I gotta check this book out now. Read a couple reviews already, sounds good.
