Only one possible winner for me, but ...

David Bowie, Savages, Bat For Lashes, Radiohead, Anohni and The 1975 are among the albums on the shortlist for this year's Hyundai Mercury Prize.

Also on the shortlist are Kano, Jamie Woon, Laura Mvula, Michael Kiwanuka, Skepta and The Comet Is Coming.

This year's prize sees a change in the rule, with the introduction of a new finalists phase on the night of the Awards Show. The first finalist will be selected by online poll with five remaining finalists will be chosen by the Mercury Prize Judging Panel. The same judging panel will then meets again at the ceremony to choose the overall winner.

The prize money has increased from previous years with the winner now going home with a cheque for £20,000. The six shortlisted albums and the winner of the prize will be announced on September 15th at the Eventim Apollo in Hammersmith.

Among the judges for this year's prize are Wolf Alice singer Ellie Roswell, Jessie Ware, Pulp mainman Jarvis Cocker and producer Naughty Boy. The prize was won in 2015 by Benjamin Clementine.

The shortlist for the 2016 Hyundai Mercury Prize is as follows:

  • The 1975 - I Like It When You Sleep...
  • Anohni - Hopelessness
  • Bat For Lashes - The Bride
  • David Bowie - Blackstar
  • Kano - Made In The Manor
  • Michael Kiwanuka - Love & Hate
  • Laura Mvula - The Dreaming Room
  • Radiohead - A Moon Shaped Pool
  • Savages - Adore Life
  • Skepta - Konnichiwa
  • The Comet Is Coming - Channel The Spirits
  • Jamie Woon - Making Time

Bowie & Radiohead are the only ones I have heard entirely, but I have heard odd tracks off five of the others. Suspect it will be awarded to Bowie as it will be the last opportunity to honour him. That Radiohead have never won this is a total travesty. They lost to Elbow last time they were nominated, FFS!

So 12 gets whittled down to 6? That's not a huge amount of reduction! Are the judges required to listen to all 12, or just that last 6?

I'd have Suede on here, to be honest. Not just a career high, but coupled with the film they made for the album, it's very atmospheric.

I'll also add Teleman to my list to show how relevant I am. Yeah.

Hi, btw. I've got a bit of Pulp back in my life atm (after focussing for a while on my own musical stuff) so yeah...hello!

I'd agree with suede, brilliant album which seems to have just disappeared off the radar.  Not quite up there with Dog Man Star, but their best since that.

Saw Teleman live as support to FFS and they were pretty good.  I haven't heard the album, but based on the live set, I don't know if it would be worthy of inclusion.  Though more worthy than The 1975 for sure.

think the first Teleman album is probably better, but the second one is still pretty good. It's a bit softer than the first I think. The Suede album was everywhere in its first few weeks, but it seems that as the gigs have stopped, and all the promotion has finished, it has been a little forgotten about. I suppose that's what happens these days when singles are lifted *before* albums rather than after...

I agree with you there. Bowie and Radiohead are the only 2 I have listened to as well. I would say Suede's album is better than Radiohead's so certainly worthy of a nomination, plus it has received rave reviews from all corners

Poor decision. Worse than giving it to M People in 1994.
news.sky.com/story/skepta-beats-david-bowie-to-win-25th-mercury-prize-10579639

Judge Jarvis Cocker - who won a Mercury Prize with his band Pulp in 1996 - said the choice came down to Bowie or Skepta. He said the panel decided that "if Bowie was looking down" he would want Skepta to win.
