When I was out and about exploring the riverside in London yesterday, I found myself in Chiswick, so decided to see if I could find the location of The Fallout Shelter, the former Island Records recording studio, at 47 British Grove. As you probably all know, this is where 'Babies' was recorded in July 1992, so it was kind of thrilling to discover it. I tried to imagine what it would have looked like 24 years ago (and what I looked like 24 years ago, too. Ha-ha).

After that, I headed up towards Hammersmith and Shepherd's Bush, and walked past the old Town House Studios (where Different Class was recorded). I go past them quite often on my way out of London but hadn't seen them since their conversion to flats (mentioned previously on this forum, I believe) but, nonetheless, it was another nice Pulpish moment.

And years ago, when I was in Islington for a work event, I saluted Britannia Row, where His 'n' Hers was recorded, so, you see, a pattern is emerging and I am wondering where to go to next?  smile

Strange...I just googled "Britannia Row" earlier today as it came up in a thing I was reading on Pink Floyd. According to Wikipedia, it moved to Wandsworth Bridge Rd in Fulham, not far from you are, in the 90's (soon after HnH presumably) but also has another name now. I think the old building in Islington is used still by the London School of Sound.

How was the Fallout Shelter looking?!

Where to go next...well you're not too far from Barnes where the Olympic Studio was/is (has a cinema now and a smaller recording studio) where some of This Is Hardcore was made.

Also in Fulham, near the tube station, was the Maison Rouge studios, where I think some stuff for Intro was done but it seems that too has disappeared.

What a coincidence, Eamonn! Yes, you're right about the Wandsworth Bridge Road - I had spotted that one before but had momentarily forgotten about it.

The Fallout Shelter was looking quite posh. Perhaps smarter than it was in 1992. It formed part of group of connected buildings, whose front entrance is an imposing house in Peter's Square (surely one of the grandest squares in London, with its own particular vibe), and whose back entrance is the converted Royal Chiswick Laundry, a preserved Victorian building. I understand that architects now inhabit the groovy back half (naturally, being architects, they have scrubbed the brickwork clean and painted the window frames slate grey, as they do), but part of the building is still a studio. I think I read that Mark Knopfler owns it.

British Grove itself is long, narrow road and it is quite tucked away (a bit like Britannia Row in that regard), so it's just right for shy rock stars.

Ooh, I will deffo look up the Maison Rouge/Intro connection, as you suggest, seeing as its not far.

And an after-thought: did I read that Jarvis thought up the words to SSC in Hyde Park? There's another locale to add to our Pulp A-Z.

A Pulp A-Z would be pretty ace. Never got round to doing the whole Wicker Man thing, but always take 10mins to stare down at the sludgy brow surface of the water whenever I'm between trains in Sheffield. Haven't really had a pilgrimage in London, other than plonking down the wee chappie in Google maps in a search for 59 Lyndhurst Grove.

Aah, Lyndhurst Grove! A lovely spot with great views over London. Yes, superchob, we should include that.

I suppose we would need a separate A-Z for Sheffield. I remember being thrilled the first time I saw the street sign: 'Wicker'. It evoked so much and I couldn't believe it was really real!

That clip was fantastic to see again, saw119. Adore the song.

(And the best hangover-curing bacon butty I have ever eaten was in the Forge Dam Cafe).

Still haven't made it to the café, though I've driven past a couple of times. The horse ride looks pretty old in your majestic vid, Saw - reckon it's one and the same? Did you stick a coin in? I'll take my 3yo son with me next time I visit the homestead (Holmfirth, not far) and get a recording... Ringtones all round!

The cafe underwent a change of ownership after I took my photos and has gone a bit upmarket (both in appearance and quality) so no more 'press in plastic letters on the price list' but they still have the horse ride and it does play a mournful, melancholy tune.

Too bad I missed it in its prime - my own stupid fault, wanting to get to my parents a little earlier, or at least the traffic's - but at least the horse ride is there... Must do it before it's replaced by a Pepper Pork or Firemad Sam or Button Moon machine...
