Thought I'd let you all know about this. Typical, the Bristol Colston Hall was my local venue for thirty-odd years until I moved away and I'd been waiting most of that time in vain for some kind of Jarvis/Pulp activity in the city (the last time being a Pulp show at the University in 1995 - just before I got into them - damn). To be honest, kids' shows from the 60's are a bit before my time and, in truth, the Thunderbirds - jiggling puppets with human voices and characteristics - did nothing but freak me out when I was young (I was a timid child). Now, if it was celebrating 80's kids' shows I'd be there in a shot. Dangermouse, Count Duckula, Chucklevision, Bodger and Badger. Ah, good times. Still, I can just picture the young Jarvis sat glued to the television, not quite understanding the strange feelings he was getting when Lady Penelope was on the screen...

This looks brilliant and I would dearly love to go. I'd be interested even if it was just Barry Gray as I love love love his Supermarionation music. If you haven't heard much then listen, it's just amazing. UFO, Captain Scarlet and Space 1999 year one in particular but I could go on and on. Add Jarvis to the music of Barry Gray and it's a real WOW. Bristol just too far though, bugger. He'll be singing about Aqua Marina again!

Edit: missed it anyway cry

I've just booked 2 tickets for this. I saw it advertised yesterday, but thought my husband was getting a bit fed up of my Pulp obsession and wouldn't want to go. But he's really into Thunderbirds, which I don't think I really ever watched even though I'm old enough to have done. He listened to the Prom on the radio while I was at the Royal Albert Hall and got very excited when Jarvis started singing Aqua Marina. And it also features Will Gregory and Moogs, and there will be an Ondes Martenot according to this:

If anyone does want to trek down to this corner of the country, you could always come and stay with us.

Last time I went to the Colston Hall, a couple of weeks ago, there was still water pouring down the street after this rather terrifying fire in a student house and I think the street is still closed.

Poor Jarvis didn't make it in the end. The presenter reckoned he was more disappointed than us as he had been really looking forward to it, but had dreadful flu, which is also why he couldn't do last Sunday's radio programme. The whole event was amazing, with Barry Gray's own Onde-Martenot, a swarmatron and various ancient synthesisers - "dashboard resembling a Morris Minor" of Will Gregory's. Jarv's last minute replacement was someone called Mike Flowers, who I've not heard of but was very good, though rather different. I don't think his mum made him a mermaid toy.

For Fran, who clearly wasn't overly subjected to this in 1996 as much as the rest of us!

He had a lot of the Austin Powers about to my mind, but he sang well and had a secondary role looking after the blind female singer from the Paraorchestra who were part of the performance. It looked pretty hazardous navigating along the front of the stage to the mics around all the music paraphernalia even if you could see as there was a lot of people and instruments crammed onto the stage. I'll look forward to the videos when I get home from work.

In case anyone's interested, they're doing this again, at St George's this time as part of the 6 Music Festival, I can't restrain myself from going again, the whole thing was great, apart from the obvious attrraction:

Here's someone else's picture from Twitter. I got in early and got a seat in the second row, right in front of Jarvis. I find it too awkward taking pictures during performances, especially from such close range, but this is a good one someone took from the balcony. I did manage a picture of the Swarmatron at the end - it makes the sound of swarms of aliens invading Earth, obviously, being played by Adrian Uttley of Portishead. Jarv had a nice 60s look polo neck very in keeping with the whole Thunderbirds thing. He was only on for 3 songs, a lot of the material is instrumental. He looked really happy to me to be doing that, big grins at the end of each song. He sounded genuinely disappointed on the radio talking about when he was ill and missed the previous performance at the Colston Hall.

Reflecting on what Eamonn said in the other post, I have seen Jarvis lately in various performances like this one tonight, the Wireless Nights performances and so on. He's also sung with assorted people like the Bright Phoebus event, the Beck event and with Chilly Gonzales. He was also on the radio last Saturday talking about the writing of Carson McCullers (the excerpt at the beginning of Big Julie is her), very much in the same mould as the Richard Brautigan programme he did for Radio 4 a while ago. So he obviously still enjoys performance, and also has a great interest in writing and story/ narrative, whether it's his own writing or that of other people. There's always lots of stories on the Sunday Service, that is very much the core of Wireless Nights and so many of his own songs. These would seem to me to be the two things where he is exceptional and that he appears to be pursuing lately. Maybe recording and all the aggro that seems to go with it is less of a focus for him.

There is also a more general current in music these days that the balance is shifting back to performance rather than recording for economic reasons, and maybe also for artistic ones, to have that connection with your audience. That's why more and more bands are getting bolshie about people with phones videoing everything at gigs, it's not some kind of copyright worry, they just want people to watch what's in front of them otherwise they could just stay at home with YouTube.

Here's a synth nerd video about the gadgets, but there's a bit of Jarvis at the end, including some performance clips. Being a synth nerd household, we enjoyed the whole thing.
