Best Music Film was given to Pulp: A Film About Life, Death & Supermarkets by Anton Newcombe of Brian Jonestown Massacre. Speaking from the stage, Pulp frontman Jarvis Cocker addressed recent comments by Noel Gallagher and Kasabian about the lack of working class musicians breaking through in 2015. On the subject of class, Cocker said: "Some people have been going on about the music business being full of toffs. It's all too posh. A long time ago, last century. Pulp released an album called 'Different Class'. It wasn't called working class, or upper class or middle class. It was called 'Different Class' because let's get over that and move on to something else." (www.nme.com/news/royal-blood/82927)

The NME managed to get exclusive access backstage at the NME awards!

Not sure what they've done with Steve, but he tweeted about it, so he must be somewhere else presumably.

I came across this on Twitter relating to the NME Awards.

"We need people making new music pushing boundaries," says #JarvisCocker (another video I can't watch at the moment with my holiday internet).

This award must be the one Steve was tweeting about, I don't know anything about Dean Blunt I'm afraid:

Oh wow, I didn't realise that the band were all there (Smackey perhaps not). But that is a lovely photo of the four of them. Well, Blur's reunion in 09 got Jarvis thinking of Pulp doing similar, maybe they can follow suit after today's news of a new Blur album ;)

And was the award judged by number of votes or by the NME? I'm surprised they won as I thought Nick Cave would be seen as a cooler person/film to vote for but I know the magazine are huge fans of Pulp and they give the group their consistently best press.

[ acceptance speech, nicely done indeed: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=-A7LWvpY-_E

Still got something relevant and eloquent to say amidst the meatheads of Kasabian, Foo Fighters et al.

He's definitely ageing best from the neck up.

Pulp in perfunctory non-committal interview: (Interesting to hear them talk about Suede too)

Judging from that acceptance speech it seems Jarvis is hell-bent on repudiating his role as class warrior. And so, another idea I'd always held about him gets shattered. Can't wait for next year's ceremony where he presents the Lifetime Achievement award to Phil Collins. In principle, I do agree with what he says, that great music is great music, no matter what the background of the people behind it. But Noel had a point, the proliferation of conveyor belt X-Factor style pop and stage school starlets and the lack of a working class voice in contemporary mainstream music is worrying. I reckon they should bring back the polytechnics and art schools. Not that that's ever likely to happen under a Conservative government. But does this mean we'll never hear Pulp play the likes of I Spy, Seconds or the Weeds saga ever again? Not to mention Common People? And just what is this 'something different' that we're supposed to move on to? The fact is, what with the growing divide between super-rich 1% and the rest of us and the deliberate demonisation of the working class as chavs and benefit scroungers, the class issue is as important today as it has ever been.

Still, the fact that they're still making public appearances as a group has got to be a good sign and there was a definite twinkle in Jarvis's eye during that interview. Something's afoot, I tell you... And am I mistaken, but was Jarvis even wearing a new tie for the occasion?

Don't think it's a new tie but I do agree about the twinkle! I had exactly the same impression about there being something being afoot when I watched the clip last night but later on decided that the interview might have been so relaxed and friendly because of the effect of a few refreshing ales, though this morning, I am, again, back to thinking the same as you.
