Squeezed between 'It' and 'Freaks' Jarvis Cocker formed and played with a succession of different bands when the mood took him. One such band was "Fish & Breadcake" featuring two future Pulp drummers, Michael Paramore and Magnus Doyle, alongside Nick Taylor (also on drums!). The band played a single gig in June 1983 at the Hallamshire in Sheffield, showcasing such sure fire hits as 'Fish', 'Use Your Candle', 'Breadcake', 'Fish and Breadcake' and 'Feed Your Dog'. Nick has dug out a tape of the gig and made it available here - http://sheffieldtapearchive.bandcamp.com/album/fish-breadcake . As before, do give generously! It's taken years for us to be able to hear these things, so try your best to encourage more to emerge! And please share this!

Blimey, its definately xmas. Massive thank you Mr.Canute for these incredible recordings & of course thank you to you Stephen for the heads up. Personally i'm really liking track 5 'fish & breadcake'... I have mentioned before that perhaps 'Steve Genn' could maybe have some early material?? I do see Steve every other day but have never felt particularly comfortable about asking him, we never talk 'Pulp' business, never have!   Anyways, since those 'heroes of the beach' recordings have surfaced i'm feeling brave so i think i will at least mention those and maybe early pulp..

Maybe burn him a copy of these tracks, offer it for his listening pleasure/reminiscing and gently enquire if he has any more?

For anyone who's interested, I believe that's Tim Allcard bellowing "The North Will Rise Again" on one of the tracks. The one that seems to go "Baby... bay-bay" is Michael Paramore and the other heavily distorted one seems to be Jarvis.

And a few more..'live at the Hallamshire' not exclusively all pulp but still a worthy listen. some of you may already have these, but i would suggest not the soundcheck '84 or The will to power '85...the link Stephen pasted at the beginning of this thread works fine.

I assumed others would say something. Guess I'll make a comment. Since this full set recording is available I didnt bother to listen. Although now that I did listen, the version of Will to Power sounds different then the version on the full set list.

I don't have the expertise of many of you regarding rare rarities, but this sounds like it must count, if it ever sees the light of day.

"One particular master stuck out beyond all others though, something of the crown jewels when it comes to Sheffield and music a live recording of Pulp performing in February of 1982 at The Marples pub, the earliest known live recording of the now legendary Sheffield band."

I'd buy it in a flash too!

Getting back to the Bandcamp page it's fascinating to hear the Dave Kurley version of Anorexic Beauty from '79. It's a completely different song.

Looks like Nick's added a couple more Pulp '85 tracks on the end of the Hallamshire collection...

Thats a great article in the Yorkshire Post. Hope the project has legs and doesn't peter out due to lack of imterest/funds like lots of these things do. The Pulp gig where the one version we have of of I Scrubbed The Crabs That Killed Sheffield is a fair bit earlier than that Marples gig, right?

Eamonn, isn't the 'Crabs' Bath Uni recording just a month previous (16/1/82) than the Marples recording (18/2/82) According to the wiki?    Ive found the Anorexic beauty recording SAW.

Is this version of Maureen actually from 1984 or is the wiki page incorrect?

I think i am right in saying that The '84 bits are from  3/6/84 and the '85 bits are from 28/3/85. all the '84 bits except the 'Don't you know? soundcheck have been previously circulated. The majority of the '85 recording has also  been previously circulated except for 'the will to power & Maureen.  I know 'Maureen' isn't listed on the wiki set list but it does suggest additional songs could have been played. In addition, the wiki set also lists 'Back in L.A & Life must be so wonderful' which remain uncirculated.

On 2nd listen it does seem that this version of maureen is in fact the '84 version we already know Voxpop. I assume it was Nick himself who supplied the '85 set list to the wiki? I wonder if 'back in L.A & life must be so wonderful' will surface?
