I think that this place is lacking much activity of late - so I decided that after hoarding things for years, collecting vinyl, bootlegs etc - with Ian being an influence for this with his recent bootleg postings, I am going to upload a rarity every week.

Im not talking about just live songs, I am going to upload demos too - some of which will have been heard before, some of which you will may not. I will not be uploading anything that has been released for example Death Comes To Town, The Boss (His N Hers deluxe) etc for example.

Sooooo......the first Rarity is the demo for Yesterday. Although officially released, this is a rough cut before mixing and mastering. Quite an interesting version if you ask me. This is taken from the Wessex demo.

Thanks so much for initiating this warm-hearted ritual. I hope it has the desired effect! It's a vicious cycle - I'm still checking-in once or twice a week, but not daily like in the past; you get used to there being less to see, and therefore visit less frequently, exacerbating the problem...

Great song which I had heard before, but it was good to have it brought back to mind. The demos from that period are awesome, and I've always enjoyed the fact that there's close to a We Love Life II sitting on a shelf somewhere. The set they played in Venice too - a shame they didn't work up more of that stuff (I liked Roald Dahl). I love the atmosphere evoked by all that material, and of course the album itself, which seems a good deal darker when you listen a bit wider & put it in context.

Looking forward to the next treat! Cheers

The Venice gig is possibly my most sought after gig - Flux was an amazing bootleg, to hear stripped down versions of songs from TIH/DC and Blue Girls, far far more superior compared to the previous stripped down stuff from 1994 (Dogs , Razz acoustic etc...). I would do anything to hear this gig.

Yesterday is a very simplistic song, which is rather catchy and under rated in my opinion. I would much rather have had a cleaned up Cuckoo released as a B side rather than this.

Happy I can help for once: Meltdown

I loved Flux too, especially Blue Girls. Pity about the glitch, though I think someone on here managed to fix it. Hearing that concert shortly before the reunion made me believe that they'd trot out old material, which of course they did. My Lighthouse was incredible, I was one of the lucky ones (though marginally less so at Brixton, getting the 'Underwear' night instead of the 'S:SC' night).

...Was it a bump or, being so quiet, an echo...?

Sorry to restart a year old thread , but would love to hear some of these demos. Or are these now available on YouTube or somewhere?

I think they're all on youtube. What constitutes a Pulp rarity these days? From what i can see, it's all out there now.

That's quite a list.
Maybe one day they'll surface?

Judging by the information available, it looks as if the following may never surface because they were played live at concerts that weren't recorded or only ever rehearsed. Of course, that doesn't rule out the fact that Jarvis (or another band member) has a recording:

A Day In The Life Of... (1)
Cockroach Conversation
Disco Baby
I Wave You Goodbye
I've Been Looking at the World Today
I've Got a Dream for You
Life Is a Circle (2)
Message to the Martians (3)
Mr Morality
Queen Poser
Shakespeare Rock (2)
She's a Disease
Tomorrow
What You Gonna Do About It?
You Should've Known
You're Too Cruel

1. May be an alternative title for "The Day that Never Happened"
2. Jarvis was able to perform acoustic versions of these on TV nearly 30 years after they were played originally so it's possible he had some sort of recording for reference
3. Was partially recycled as "Refuse to be Blind"

In your link you said My Mistake was recorded as part of that lot of songs in Jan 2000 in Wessex. Is that right? PulpWiki, which got the info from Pulppeople, doesn't seem to think so. My Mistake either came from the Depot demos a couple of months later or from a thus far undocumented session. The former would be preferable as it would mean that all those other songs hitherto classified as instrumentals only (Medieval Owl, Dream Galaxy etc.) were potentially recorded with lyrics too and therefore are more likely to be released some day.
